  • Here’s How To Look Stylish This Fall Without Wearing a Sweater

    Quintessential Fall Fashion

Wearing another dress for fall? Groundbreaking.

This time, instead of an unseasonal maxi dress, I am wearing a floral long-sleeve number.

Our weather finally cooled off, and I got to have a quintessential fall day in the perfect autumn outfit.

For anyone still thinking inside the box that fall fashion is only about sweater weather, let me use this outfit to change your mind!

Continue reading to get my tips on how to style yourself this season without relying on a sweater. (Although sweaters for fall are great too!)

Why I Bought a Dress For Fall

Fall is a fun time to experiment in your closet, play with your layers, and try something new.

If you’re stuck in a jeans and sweater rut to chase away the chills, this outfit should inspire you to branch out and try something new!

Hannah is a white female with short brown hair. She's standing outside near a tree, smiling, wearing a blue floral dress, brown tights, brown knee high boots, and a teal beret.

My long-sleeve floral dress with a mock turtleneck has been on my thrifting wishlist for seven years! I first spotted it on ThredUp and wanted it for an event but knew it wouldn’t arrive in time.

Even though the event came and went, I never stopped thinking about this dress (or adding it to my ThredUp wishlist)!

Finally, this year, I decided to just buy the dress and live out all my fall fashion fantasies with it.

Bringing To Life My Fall Fashion Fantasy

So, what is my fall fashion fantasy? Colors that reflect the changing leaves, pieces that invoke nostalgia, like tights and boots, plus cozy elements like a thrifted beret.

This outfit checked all the boxes for me. Plus, I wore it on a beautiful fall day to walk around and support local artists in my hometown. It could not have felt more perfect!

Fall Outfits That Don’t Involve a Sweater

If you’re like me and want to try something new this fall without relying on a sweater, here are a few outfit combinations I would suggest:

    • Destructed denim and a utilitarian jacket
    • A short skirt, turtleneck, and tights… à la The Nanny!
    • A cute long-sleeve shirt and overalls
    • A flouncy blouse and non-denim pants (think palazzo pants!)
    • A dress and a chunky cardigan
    • A midi skirt, button-down, and sweater vest
    • Colored denim, a sweatshirt, and a classic camel coat

Are you feeling inspired yet? I’d love to see your fall outfits. Tag me on social media so I can check them out!

Be sure to pin this post so you don’t forget these outfit formulas! Or share this post with a friend who wants to shake up their style!

  • A DIY Jack-o’-Lantern Halloween Costume

    A DIY Jack-o'-Lantern Halloween Costume www.theoutfitrepeater.comDIY Jack-O’-Lantern Halloween Costume

I take being the cutest pumpkin in the patch quite literally!

Based on that, I decided to make my own jack-o’-lantern costume from materials I had lying around.

It was very easy and would be a great last-minute costume or even an outfit to wear to a pumpkin patch.

Best of all? You don’t have to have any real pumpkin carving skills!

Just grab something orange from your closet, and some scissors, and you’re ready to go!

What You Need For a Jack-o’-Lantern Costume

The base of my jack-o’-lantern costume is an orange sweater dress (or maybe a sweater? It’s quite long!) that I thrifted.

Because you’ll be modifying your clothing item, I recommend choosing something you don’t have a lot of attachment to, like a thrifted shirt or dress in any shade of orange!

And finally, to make your jack-o’-lantern Halloween costume, you’ll need either sticky-back black paper or felt. I found mine at the Dollar Tree!

How To Put Together Your Own Jack-o’-Lantern Costume

I freehanded a jack-o’-lantern design on my black sticky-back paper, cut it out, and then placed it on my sweater.

You could go one step further and buy iron-on paper and attach your jack-o’-lantern face more permanently to your garment. But I do plan to re-wear this sweater in the future so I just needed a temporary solution!

an orange sweater, thrifted beret, and tights are transformed into a DIY jack-o'-lantern halloween costume

To complete the look, I think it’s best to wear orange pants to really convey the idea that you’re a human-sized pumpkin! Or you could wear tights if you chose a dress.

Finally, top it off with a black beret (mine is thrifted!) to emulate the stem on top of a pumpkin! A brown beret would work great, too!

    Halloween Costume Takeaways

This jack-o’-lantern costume is easy to make and is also a great way to get into the Halloween spirit without breaking the bank! It’s a classic costume that everyone will recognize.

You could make a bunch of different variations and wear them all together as a family or group “pumpkin patch” costume.

So why not give it a try and see how creative you can get? Be sure to bookmark or Pin this post so you can re-create it later!

Outfit Photo Dump: What I Wore To Work At MauricesWhat I Wore At Maurices

It’s time for another round-up of outfits that I’ve worn to work at Maurices!

Are you new here and wondering what I do at Maurices? That’s a good question!

I am a social media manager that creates content (photos and videos) and posts to the social media pages of a local Maurices store.

My day-to-day tasks usually consist of working from home, keeping up with social trends, writing copy, and editing posts.

But at least once a week, I go into my actual store to get familiar with new products and take photos and videos.

When I’m in the store, I try on a lot of clothes and take a lot of pictures which I can then share with you here on my fashion blog!

Here’s the latest in what I wore while working. Almost everything is current Maurices. Let me know if you need a style number or direct link!

    Outfit Repeating in Overalls

I have to start this post with these glorious flared denim overalls I recently bought from the store. I had been eyeing them for over a month because they looked similar to a pair on my thrifting wishlist.

A sale came around and I decided to snatch them up. They were worth every penny! The denim is stretchy so I can really get down and move around during my shifts.

I repeated them back-to-back because they’re just that good. I just changed out my sneakers and shirt to get a slightly different look.

Fit note: I’m kind of between sizes right – about an 8 – but bought the 6 because I knew these were stretchy. It was a good call. I could almost go down to a 4!

    Hats Off To This Look

This billowy patchwork blouse didn’t stick around in our store for very long. It’s so gorgeous and was fun to dress up with faux leather pants for a date night inspired outfit!

hannah's smiling wearing a black hat, billowy pink top, and black faux leather leggings

    Keepin’ It Casual

Is she going on a walk, running errands, or catching up with her friends for coffee? The girl wearing this look is probably doing all of the above AND she’s pretty freakin’ comfortable.

hannah is standing with her hands in the pocket of a maroon vest and is wearing a striped sweatshirt and tan cargo pants

    Yeehaw For Fall Fashion

Fashion is all about having fun and experimenting with different looks. This western-inspired outfit is definitely different for me but it achieved the task of showing off new arrivals. Plus it’s cute to boot!

hannah is wearing a tan wide brim hat, red plaid button up over a matching sweater, and light wash denim

    Halloween Costume Ideas from Maurices

While Maurices has a lot of categories (womens, girls, home, PJs) they don’t do Halloween costumes. So I got creative and pulled pieces from the floor that could be re-imagined into fright night looks.

Below are an animal, Barbie/Elle Woods, FBI agent, and a farmer with her scarecrow. This challenge was a blast!

    Getting Red-dy For The Holidays

Again with these overalls! They’re great for wearing when you don’t know what to expect during a shift – like spending 2 hours sitting on the floor making wreaths in a fitting room!

The wreaths are part of our holiday floor set and were meant to be put together by the associates. I happily accepted the task because I love crafting. It really was a lot of fun! (My fingers full of papercuts wouldn’t say the same though lol)

hannah is standing in a fitting room, holding a christmas wreath. she's wearing a red long sleeve top and denim overalls

    Channel The Flannel

It’s not fall (or the holidays) without a lot of plaid and flannels.

My personal wardrobe is lacking but thankfully I have a store full to choose from and play with when I’m putting together outfits at work. This was a look to share some new arrivals. I love how each piece is pretty basic but when you put it all together, you get a really chic ensemble!

hannah's standing in front of a mirror wearing a red top with a blue plaid button up over the top, denim skinny jeans, a black wide brim hat, and black lug sole boots

    Thrifted Things

I thought I’d end this round-up with an all thrifted outfit (except the boots) I was wearing when I got into the store. It’s a little casual and a lot kick-ass!

hannah is smiling wearing a black and white striped tee with a black hoodie and denim jacket layered over it. she's wearing olive green skinny jeans and black combat boots.

  • Fall Street Style In The Midwest

    What’s Next in Fashion

I recently connected with a local boutique to collaborate on posts for their social media pages. It’s a small, women-owned business selling current trends and includes many brands that support or give back to humanity. (The jewelry brand, Pura Vida, for example)

With all that said, I’m excited to share some recent outfits I’ve styled from the boutique! The boutique is not currently sold online but is considering adding that option in the future. For now, these are just purely inspirational pictures for my online community!

    Back to Basics

My first photoshoot (aka, me and my tripod!) was photographing a super cozy 2 piece jogger set. I styled the cropped hoodie with Kancan jeans for an on-the-go look.

    Stepping Out In Style

The boutique has an amazing range of high-quality clothing.

Me, being me, goes a little extra and had a full-blown photoshoot in the streets. Can you blame me with clothes like this?! They’re pretty different from what I wear in real life but it’s so fun playing dress up!

    Fabulous Fall Fashion

I really channeled the flannel for these fall looks and got into the street style spirit. These looks aren’t something you normally see in small Midwest towns but it’s about time that changed, amirite?

    Playing Favorites

Ok, now tell me what outfit is your favorite! If you like what you see, please feel free to follow the boutique pages on Instagram and Facebook to keep up with the latest posts. And also Pin your favorite outfit!

    A Fall Family Wedding

OMG, now my sister got married! On the cusp of my brother tying the knot last month (and my fun thrifted wedding guest dress), now my older sister has gone and done the same.

Weddings are typically a summer event but I guess my family prefers the fall!

For my sister’s nuptials, I was chosen as the maid-of-honor/bridesmaid/witness, which are all roles I’ve never been in and never thought I would be. I lucked out that it was a super tiny wedding and I am the closest person to my sis.

    My Purple Bridesmaid Dress

I had a year-long heads up that I was going to be participating and immediately began a purple dress search at thrift stores, on thredUP, Poshmark, friends’ closets, and every wedding or online retail store you can imagine; and with just weeks to spare, still had nothing to show for it. In a desperate feat, I just bought something off of Amazon that vaguely resembled my ideal dress.

Y’all, I hate this dress. I don’t even want to link it. It’s not my dream cut, color, or style. Buuuut the day was about my sister and HER dress was magical, like straight from a fairytale. I was happy to let her shine on the big day!

You might notice my necklace is repeated from my brother’s wedding. It’s a gift from my late great-grandma. I wanted to make sure she was part of the celebration!

And my shoes and these photos are both courtesy of my brother’s new wife. Basically, everything is a family affair! haha

    What Happened At The Wedding

The day went off without a hitch (no pun intended) and was the perfect union of my sister and her new husband’s personalities.

There were details all over the event space that was a reminder of the couple like a Smurf cake topper and the DIY taco bar. It was a truly one-of-a-kind wedding!

I don’t normally divulge a lot of personal details online, especially regarding my family, but I have posted about my big brother, Ethan, in many videos and blog posts in the past and often get requests to share more of him. So here’s some photos of the two of us; we’re pretty sure he’s shrinking. 🤣

    Wedding Dress Advice

I’ve shared advice and inspiration before about finding an outfit as a wedding guest but this role as a MOH left me stumped. I did everything you’re supposed to do and it still didn’t work for me.

Regardless when it comes to buying a wedding outfit, try thrift stores and online secondhand marketplaces, ask your friends if they have something you can borrow from their closet, use an inspo pic and reverse Google Image search, and be open to ALL retail stores and niche boutiques.

But if none of that works and you still don’t have a dress (oh, and did I mention my shoes got lost in the mail??) then default to Amazon. It’s a crummy corporate giant but it came through with 2-day Prime shipping when nowhere else did!!

You know when you thrift certain clothing and it makes you grin like a goon and you become obsessed with it? That’s this oversized jumpsuit for me. (As seen in my latest thredUP thrift haul)

It kind of goes against what fashion dictates that we wear.

It’s oversized. Unflattering. And, frankly, it’s ugly.

I think I like it so much because I’m not supposed to be wearing it. But I, for one, will always champion for clothing that is comfortable & practical.

Do you have something, or more than one something, like this in your closet that you love?

    An Outfit Inspired By Halloween

For the inaugural wear of this thrifted oversized black jumpsuit, I leaned into the Halloween vibes.

I wore a striped, long-sleeve shirt underneath, a black wide-brim fedora, cat eye sunglasses, and black ballet flats.

I could be a part-time witch or Indiana Jones’ cool niece. (Harrison Ford, call me!)

    Making Unflattering Clothes Look Better

The natural shape of this jumpsuit is actually really shapeless. It just kind of exists somewhere in time and space. I like that it can make people question whether I really have a body or not.

For the sake of this fit, I chose to wear a belt to give myself a little shape.

The one I chose is a fun, elasticized piece that has a big circular buckle. It helped to continue the theme of being comfortable without constriction. I love ’80s clothes for that! They were really on to something!

  • How To Make Your Clothes Last Longer

    [su_note note_color=”#FFFFFF” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”9″ class=””]

This post contains affiliate links & I may receive a commission if you click or complete a purchase through them.

    [/su_note]

Fashion comes and goes, but style is forever.

    The Trend Trap

The allure of fashion shows sucks us into this train of thought that we should be updating our wardrobe for every season and keeping up with trends. For some people, this works. For others, like myself, we prefer to strategically buy pieces that reflect our personalities and our personal styles. (Whatever that looks like from day to day.)

It’s so wild to think that once upon a time, every piece in my outfit was hanging out on the racks at a mainstream retailer and it was trendy. Then suddenly, one day, it wasn’t trendy anymore and ended up at a thrift store where I swooped in and bought it.

It really makes you stop and think about the lifecycle of clothes both on a global spectrum but also within your own closet. Do you trade out your clothes pretty quick (thrifting and then re-donating months later) or do you hang on to clothes for a long time?

    What I’m Wearing

This outfit is the perfect example of what I’m talking about.

More than half of it was bought from thredUP, the largest online consignment store in the US. The white moto jacket is my newest purchase while the pink sweater and flared jeans were bought a year ago. I had a vision that they would play nicely with my wardrobe for a long time to come and I was right!

And the rest of my look is a combo of new and old secondhand pieces I’ve acquired through the years. (Recognize my “ugly” shirt? It’s still going strong!)

    Making Your Clothes Last Longer

When I say “make your clothes last longer,” I don’t mean in a laundry way. There are already laundry gurus out there that can teach you those tips and tricks but I’m not one of them.

What I’d like to share is more about making thoughtful buying decisions, and other tips to make your clothes last longer.

    1. Buy only things you have a vision for. Mindlessly buying clothes without a purpose will lead you to a closet of mismatched clothes and the dreaded having-nothing-wear-syndrome. Shop carefully, go with a plan, and buy things you really really really love.

    2. Look for quality pieces. As mentioned above, this multi-patterned button-up has been with me the longest and is arguably made to last! It’s also the oldest piece I’m wearing, likely originating in the early ’90s.

    3. Mix and match your clothes. Get as much wear out of what you currently own. Be an outfit repeater. I promise it’s cool!

  • A Fall Clothing Haul, Y’all!

thrifted fall outfit ideas hannah ruppThrifted Fall Outfit Ideas

It’s been so long since I shared any type of thrift haul! Has it really been since August?!

This post is long overdue then!

I’ve picked up some really fun pieces for fall in recent months so I styled them and am excited to share some thrifted fall outfit inspiration!

(So, technically these outfits aren’t meant for fall, but I bought the pieces in the fall so that counts by default, right?)

    Red-dy For Fall Fashion

You can’t go wrong with pulling colors from fall foilage into your outfit.

From this row of photos, I thrifted the flouncy striped crop top that I paired with these rusty orange-y palazzo pants that I previously bought from thredUP.

Next is a rich orange cardigan. If you think you can’t pull off a certain color (like, yuck, orange!) remember that there’s a plethora of shades and tones out there. I’ve found this darker, cool tone compliments my skin tone well!

My third outfit has a pink denim jacket that I’ve had on my thrifting wishlist for awhile. I got it for a steal since the store was going out of business! (Insert sad face!!!)

And probably my greatest find this season are these red palazzo pants… are you sensing a theme with my bottoms? I’m embracing lots of color and non-skinny leg openings. The bolder, the better!

    [irp posts=”19874″ name=”THRIFT STORE MAP”]

    New & Blue

Blue is always a go-to color for me!

I bought the first two dresses as options for a fall wedding I attended. Neither of them made the cut. So can someone invite me somewhere so I have an excuse to wear them? They’re too cute to sit in the back of my closet!

The third look features a denim kimono. As soon as I saw it, I thought it was something special. But I doubted it was something special I needed in my life. Thankfully my thrifting buddy (aka my mom) and I talked it through and knew I needed it. It’s so cool and unique!

You might think the last outfit is showing off this sequin dress (bought from thredUP many years ago) but it’s actually all about the holographic belt bag! I don’t know how much wear I’ll get out of it but I always love a good belt bag.

    [irp]

The Dark Side of My Closet

Contrary to popular belief, I do wear black and other dark colors. Just not too often!

I saw this black oversized vintage pullover sweater while thrifting and grabbed it so fast. This is my favorite cut of sweater and it’s so hard to find!

Next… OMG… let’s just take a collective deep breath… PLAID HIGH WAISTED PANTS! I’ve wanted a pair for as long as I can remember! I had no faith that they would fit me but I took them to the dressing room with me anyways and got the surprise of my life when they fit like a glove! They will definitely get a lot of wear come Christmas time.

Can you spot the next item I thrifted? It’s a leopard print sweater! Out of everything in this post, it’s been on repeat the most. I wore it 3 times in one week. Yikes!

And the last good is this buttery soft brown faux leather jacket. I kept petting it at the store because it was so soft. It complements so much of a my wardrobe so it was a good buy!

    Still On A Yellow Streak

Yellow is another autumnal color that’s having a moment right now. Of course I’ve added lots of it to my closet!

First is this air-y little summer dress. It’s identical to the red one I shared in my last thrift haul. It was an easy ‘yes’ for me!

Then can we talk about this sweatshirt? TBH, I’ve got like 3 yellow sweatshirts now so I don’t need anymore but this longer length one was too good to pass up. I picked up the rainbow leggings for fun from a community closet!

    [irp]

The third outfit has a new-to-me baby blue cardigan. I was totally smitten by the color! Just imagine the outfit possibilities!

And in the very last outfit, I’m wearing a pink mini dress that I scored on Poshmark. It’s identical to the polka dot dress from my last thrift haul. Hey, when you like something, why not buy doubles?

Fall is in full swing and I’m sure you’ve all got a milelong bucket list of activities to fulfill!

    Me? Not so much.

I’m continuing to take it easy this season and have converted an “activities” list into an outfit list. That’s what a fashion girl does, right?

To really top it off, I created a mini pumpkin patch in my own backyard so I can fulfill my outfit fantasies in a seasonally appropriate setting! * extra and I know it *

So whether you’re hitting up an apple farm or Netflix and chillin’ with a scary movie, maybe one of my outfits will spark an idea for you!

    Color-fall Jeans & Sweater

Fall is really a beautiful season because of the changing colors. I like to switch out summer pieces for fall but keep one thing – COLOR! The shades and hues just change a little bit.

Yellow still remains one of my faves so I paired up this bright sweater with dark olive skinny jeans. To keep it somewhat cohesive, I chose a neck scarf that ties both colors together and a matching yellow beret.

This is seriously one of my most favorite outfits in a long time!

    Girl Bossin’ In Orange Pants

If you missed my last blog post with a big announcement, I’m employed in the fashion industry again. It’s such an exciting time to jump back in!

So I wore my “girl boss” graphic t-shirt (I’m loving all the satire surrounding the phrase on TikTok!) and tried something different with a white moto jacket. I’m digging the monotone vibe!

Then I (pumpkin) spiced it up with my faaaavorite orange palazzo pants. Altogether it’s kind of a cool, quirky fall look.

A Sweatshirt That Is SO GOOD

I’ve already worn this outfit for quite a few events like shopping, a quick stop at a corn maze, and sitting around my house.

The sweatshirt is a classic, comfy piece and I wore it with yellow pants to kick it up a notch. I think that helps it from being an ordinary top + jeans look.

    Pumpkins & Polka Dots

I know I’ve used the word “favorite” quite loosely in this post and it’s honestly a pet peeve of mine… but this babydoll dress is my FAVORITE baby doll dress! There, I said it.

It was easy to style with some knock-off Doc Martens and a pork pie hat. It’s a very classic “me” outfit and I couldn’t have felt more comfortable to be wearing it!

    What Will I Wear Next?

    Which outfit was your favorite?

If you’re anything like me (a very sleepy spoonie!) maybe I can make this “outfit bucket list” a tradition. Rather than choosing to go places every season, I’ll just dream about what I want to wear! What do you think?

After 12 years with stomach issues and 3 years with chronic fatigue, I’m still finding out new things about myself everyday.

This summer was like one I’d never had before, full of days and weeks stuck in bed with heavy fatigue and brain fog. After months of intense symptoms and doctor appointments, I’m only emerging back into a “human-like” state because the weather has cooled down.
