Your Clothes Are Wrong, Says The Internet

Whenever an anti-fashion trend comes along, I am always interested in learning more! Right now the internet is full of “wrong shoe theory” and other clothing combos that should not be mixed.

It’s funny that in 2023, there are still rules to be broken and fashion frontiers we’ve yet to completely explore!

If you’re a little confused about what something like the “wrong shoe theory” means, basically it’s about wearing a shoe that doesn’t fit the aesthetic of your entire look.

Like, a sneaker with a ball gown. Or high heels with cargo pants.

I realize I’ve been doing this sort of dressing for a long time without really thinking about it. To me, it’s just how I dress. I’m not trying to break any fashion rules or start a trend. I’m just wearing what feels right to me! Though for illustrative purposes, here’s an example of how I’m rocking the “wrong clothing” theory for myself.

Why My Outfit Is Wrong

So what is wrong with waking up in the morning and putting on a quirky, brightly colored graphic tee with a rainbow striped skirt?

Well, according to the wrong clothing theory, a graphic tee is too casual and should be worn with jeans. And, on the other hand, my rainbow striped skirt is too “fancy” and should only be worn with other fancy clothes.

So this idea of high-low dressing with my thrifted finds should, hypothetically, make fashion designers roll their eyes.

Why I Think My Outfit Is Right

As we discussed in the opening paragraph of this post; I just get dressed for myself.

So I don’t really split my closet into “fancy” and “un-fancy” clothes. They’re all equal to me.

When I was putting this outfit together for a thrift outing, I just knew I wanted to wear something that felt fun, comfortable, and would hold up in the heat.

I’ve owned this skirt for a while but don’t wear it near enough (maybe because I’m always waiting for a special occasion, but that’s a different blog post…) and I wanted a top that could match how vibrant it was. This Napoleon Dynamite graphic tee was just the ticket!

By wearing them together, I’m not trying to make a statement. Unless that statement is “Vote For Pedro.” (Or perhaps this outfit means I’m out to prove I’ve got nothing to prove? I could quote Napoleon all day!)

What You Should Be Wearing

Wearing the “wrong” clothes together is definitely nothing new. It’s how we’ve rebelled in fashion for decades!

But this choice to wear weird combinations is totally up to you. You can play by the books and wear a totally cohesive outfit or you can throw caution to the wind and come up with something unique to your style.
