I’m going decade diving for the entire month of March and interpreting the fashions of yesteryear by means of magazines, movies, and pop culture of the time. Join me as I visit the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and end the month in the ’80s.
This is my final outfit post and of course it’s focused on 1980’s fashion. I wouldn’t want it any other way!
I teased in my previous outfit post that I was going to recreate my best Cyndi Lauper and here’s what I came up with.
This is the end of my Fashion Flashback series so it seemed fitting to wear an outfit that Cyndi wore to the first MTV Video Awards back in 1984. It’s the circle of fashion, er.. something like that. (picture cred)
My look kind of crossed into costume territory.. ok, A LOT costume territory. But Cyndi was not shy about style in the ’80s so I happily went with it.
I’ve always associated her with plaid so this look was a natural fit. I started by turning my plaid dress backwards, as she did. And then I accessorized to the nines! Most of my jewelry is handmade. I actually got so caught up in making the necklace that I didn’t realize the wire I used had sliced my finger. So yes, I literally bled for this look.
I tried adding a crown but it just didn’t work for me. Maybe I’ll throw one on if I’m ever up for a moon man of my own. Ha!
I don’t really mind how over-the-top this outfit turned out. Why not end the month with a bang? Be sure to stay tuned because next week I’ll be posting a recap of the month for anyone who wants to relive the past once again. 😉
And if you’d like to see how Cyndi rocked this first, I would highly encourage you to watch this retro tv clip. I could get lost on YouTube rocking out to ’80s music videos. BRB, going to do just that!

Because of course you rocked a backwards dress and handmade jewelry as Cyndi Lauper. Amazing!
