Once upon a time, I was an 8-year-old homeschooler surrounded by a sea of girls with pigtails and overall dresses.
I never really jumped on the jumper train but now I’m an adult and my jumper has become a purple corduroy dress and those pigtails are now a bright purple pixie cut. (At the time of these photos, anyways..)
There’s certain clothing that is difficult to pull off past the age of 8 and I reckon a dress like mine is one of them. My homeschooling days may be behind me but the clothes I wore are forever burned into my memory.
To be honest, I only wore a jumper a handful of times and I’m pretty sure it was denim with ladybug appliques on it. Either way, I feel like my outfit is the grown-up version of whatever I used to wear.
Months ago I came upon two corduroy dresses in a free sale and decided to give away whichever one didn’t get the most wear. Who knew I’d dye my hair purple and wear this purple one so much?
Together with my breton striped top, this duo was perfect for a casual day of thrifting and a lunch outing with my mom. (More honesty: that’s almost exactly what I did in my homeschooling days so clearly not much has changed!)
And of course every outfit is made cooler with my pork pie hat & a dark pair of sunglasses.
I’m glad to find a way to update this trend from my childhood. While there may be hope for this overall dress, it still may be years before we can take back sweater vests from the homeschoolers…

(Sidenote: I realize this post is riddled with jabs to the homeschool community but I just want to point out that it’s ok for me to make fun of homeschool attire because I was a homeschooler. I know it all too well!)
