Dress for Success
Deciding what to wear to a job interview can be as challenging as figuring out what to wear as a wedding guest.
With different dress codes, work environments, job responsibilities—not to mention factoring in your own personal taste—it can be a lot of information to take in and process.
I’m here today to help you navigate getting dressed for a job interview that might take you outside the normal realm of employment as I have a background with mostly creative freelance gigs!
And just like with wedding wear, I encourage you to stick with staples in your wardrobe and don’t go out and buy a new outfit for every interview. And if you must, go with secondhand!
All of the outfits in this post were created using the same pair of thrifted black trousers. It’s a great base for many looks and has a way of blending seamlessly for any job or personal style.
Ready to conquer that interview in style? Let’s get started!
What To Wear: Creative Career
One of my most notable gigs that I’ve documented here on my fashion blog are my years of personal styling at maurices. It’s a women’s clothing store with sizes and styles for every stage of life.
For my interview, I wore almost the exact combination below. I paired palazzo pants with a crop top and added some eye-catching accessories to show off my personal style and knowledge of trends and the fashion industry. It worked!
What To Wear: In The Office
Admittedly I have no firsthand office work experience but because of my above creative career, I have dressed lots of folks in business!
Once you’ve found the perfect black pants, a dressy blouse is a great top option.
Very few people I’ve dressed would ask for this shade of green but this is me, after all. If I wanted to stand out and make an impression in the corporate world, why not do it in color?
What To Wear: Remote Work
Remote work is gaining in popularity and I’m definitely a fan—both for the convivence & accessibility, as well as the dress code.
I put together a look worthy of being on Zoom: just a top, a swipe of lipstick, and statement earrings.
You technically don’t even need the black trousers for this outfit… but what if you stand up to grab something and your Looney Tunes PJ pants appear on camera?! Better wear the black pants just in case. 😉
What To Wear: Freelance Fashionista
Last but not least is freelance work. This covers a wide range of flexible jobs from at-home work to in-office days. But normally you’re the boss calling the shots and you get to wear whatever you want.
I’ve picked up many projects over the years and I find the interview outfits to be the most fun. For each one, I aim to to be the most ME that I can be so I instill trust in the potential collaborator. What screams more Outfit Repeater than a Girl Boss tee and polka dot blazer?
Exit Review
While I can’t help you nail the interview questions, hopefully this post helped you out with what to wear to your next job interview. I’d love to hear what you end up wearing and how it goes!
