I put on my outfit thinking cap after a reader asked me how to style suspenders for women.

I’ve worn suspenders infrequently on my blog and in real life. They’re such a fun piece but a little tough to style if you normally dress femininely, like me.

I went through my thrifted closet and came up with 3 secondhand outfit ideas using suspenders that are very stylish and wearable.

Styling Suspenders With A Skirt

To get outfit inspiration, I did a search on Pinterest for “suspender outfit ideas” and came up with a slew of masculine outfits in black and white, usually with a nod to a vintage era.

I’m not normally one to fit in a box and I really like color so I knew I wanted to incorporate more feminine details into an outfit.

I styled my suspenders with a splashy vintage skirt, a button-up in a clashing pattern, and my favorite ASOS pork pie hat.

All together, it was giving the 1980s in the best way possible!

Styling Suspenders With Pants

Since suspenders are an accessory made to hold up pants and trousers, of course I had to style a pair with pants!

I chose a pair of green skinny jeans, which I worn with this combination of garments before – a floral crop top and denim jacket. But the addition of the suspenders gave the outfit a whole different look. It felt very playful and modern!

Styling Suspenders With Shorts

Hands down my favorite way to style suspenders is with a pair of shorts!

I love these vintage, black, high-waisted shorts. They’re great to wear in the winter with a pair of tights, or in the warmer months with literally any blouse in my closet.

This outfit is, again, a little bit 1980s and a whole lot of color. If the yellow Baggu backpack looks familiar, it’s from my latest thredUP thrift haul!

Tips For Styling Suspenders

I learned a thing or two from styling these suspenders in my closet and of course, I have to share!

• Suspenders are made to hold up any garment – pants, shorts, skirt, etc. So get creative with what you have in your closet. Maybe a pair of oversized denim would be right up your alley!

• Suspenders come in all different colors but if you’re just testing the waters, start with a basic black pair. Mine were a birthday gift but these ones from ASOS are very similar!

• Suspenders look best with collared shirts but you can do so much more! Don’t be afraid to try a graphic tee or ruffled blouse. It will give the outfit your unique thumbprint!
