Making a Case For Wide-Leg Jeans
Wide-leg jeans: you either love them or hate them!
As you can see from the post, I am a big fan of wide-leg jeans and my goal is to convince as many skeptics as possible.
To me, wide-leg jeans are a refreshing change from tight, clingy skinny jeans or leggings.
The extra fabric is great for those of us with strong legs, and the high waist detail helps to elongate our legs.
Of course, there are some challenges—like how to style them, what to do if they’re too long, and whether petite people can wear them.
Let’s explore 3 simple ways to incorporate wide-leg jeans into your wardrobe, so you can confidently join the trend and avoid any fashion mistakes.
Wearing Wide-Leg Jeans with a Cardigan
What kind of top pairs best with wide-leg jeans? It’s best to keep it simple and fitted, so it doesn’t compete with the volume on the bottom.
But simple doesn’t have to mean boring!
For this look, I wore my wide-leg jeans with a yellow striped cardigan buttoned up to resemble a sweater. I then added yellow accessories to brighten the whole look.
Dressing Down Wide Leg Jeans With a Coat
How do you wear a coat or jacket with wide-leg jeans? There are many possibilities but my favorite is a long jacket, like a trench coat or pea coat, to continue the creation of a long line.
Whether you’re 5’2″ or 6’1″, this style tip is a hit.
Here’s how I wore a long pink coat with the wide-leg jeans. Underneath my coat is a fitted long-sleeved sweater and I wore pink ballet flats to keep it all together. Notice I wore pointed-toe flats to keep my feet from getting lost in the jeans!
Dressing Up Wide-Leg Jeans With Heels
What if the jeans are just too long? Find a good tailor or embrace wearing shoes with a platform. Whether that’s a wedge, clog, or your favorite heels.
Here I dressed up my wide-leg jeans with a thrifted white blouse and brown boho accessories. It’s still casual but elevated.
Wide-Leg Jeans: Your Style Questions Answered (and More Tips, Just Because!)
What else is there to know about wearing wide-leg jeans?
• Rise matters: low-rise denim comes off as very dated, so look for something mid or higher-rise to suit your torso.
• Play around with juxtaposition: these aren’t the JNCO wide-leg jeans of the ’90s. They’re much more sophisticated these days you can play around with a lot of different styles on top from my boho example to ultra-feminine, tomboy, preppy, or whatever your heart desires. Just keep your proportions in check and you should be OK!
• Roll ’em up: if the volume is still too much, cuff your jeans. Even if you don’t have a volume issue, this small styling trick can add versatility and create many style options.
• Open up: keep in mind the leg opening. If you’re petite, go with something smaller. If you’re tall, you can get away with something more dramatic. This goes for your shape, too. You’re trying to balance your body, not swallow it up. Sometimes you have to kiss a lot of toads to find your (denim) prince!
