  • My Weird Al Halloween Costume

weird al Yankovic Halloween costumeWeird Al Halloween Costume

Oh, this is a story ’bout a guy named Al… he’s kind of weird.

Despite the name Weird Al, he’s an incredible entertainer who’s spanned multiple decades and generations with his song parodies and irreverant humor in pop culture.

It just feels right to copy a guy who’s made a living copying other people.

I’ve had this Halloween costume on my bucketlist for years and it was about time that I put it together. I’ve already got similar features so why not go for it?

If you’re looking to have a stress-free and hilarious Halloween, then keep scrolling to learn more about how I came put together my Weird Al Halloween costume!

Why I Dressed As Weird Al

Weird Al has had a major impact on me growing up! His humor, style, and personality are awesome!

Even more than his music, his 1989 movie “UHF” played on repeat during my childhood and has bled into my families lexicon ever since.

Weird Al definetly helped me embrace my own weirdness over the years!

My Weird Al Yankovic Halloween Costume

How I Put Together My Weird Al Costume

Replicating Weird Al’s look isn’t very hard because he’s mostly followed the same simple outfit formula for most of his career – a Hawaiian shirt, skinny jeans, and sneakers. Everything was already in my closet but could easily be thrifted!

My Weird Al Yankovic Halloween Costume My Weird Al Yankovic Halloween Costume

Then just add in some curly hair, glasses, and a big ol’ mustache and you’ve got a complete look! I wore my hair natural but did touch it up a little bit with a curling iron so it was extra big. You could easily acheive this with a wig!

My mustache is drawn on with eyeliner and my glasses are old Dollar Tree aviator sunglasses that I punched the lenses out of.

Tips For Recreating Your Own Weird Al Halloween Costume

Let’s be real, the best part of this costume is the comfort. No tight bodysuits or uncomfortable masks here. Just a breezy shirt and some chill vibes.

You can even score bonus points if you carry around an accordion and randomly burst into song throughout the night!

If you’re a fan of Weird Al, then this would be a great Halloween costume for you to wear! Please be sure to Pin this post or tag me on Instagram so I can see your version of Weird Al!

  • A DIY Jack-o’-Lantern Halloween Costume

    A DIY Jack-o'-Lantern Halloween Costume www.theoutfitrepeater.comDIY Jack-O’-Lantern Halloween Costume

I take being the cutest pumpkin in the patch quite literally!

Based on that, I decided to make my own jack-o’-lantern costume from materials I had lying around.

It was very easy and would be a great last-minute costume or even an outfit to wear to a pumpkin patch.

Best of all? You don’t have to have any real pumpkin carving skills!

Just grab something orange from your closet, and some scissors, and you’re ready to go!

What You Need For a Jack-o’-Lantern Costume

The base of my jack-o’-lantern costume is an orange sweater dress (or maybe a sweater? It’s quite long!) that I thrifted.

Because you’ll be modifying your clothing item, I recommend choosing something you don’t have a lot of attachment to, like a thrifted shirt or dress in any shade of orange!

And finally, to make your jack-o’-lantern Halloween costume, you’ll need either sticky-back black paper or felt. I found mine at the Dollar Tree!

How To Put Together Your Own Jack-o’-Lantern Costume

I freehanded a jack-o’-lantern design on my black sticky-back paper, cut it out, and then placed it on my sweater.

You could go one step further and buy iron-on paper and attach your jack-o’-lantern face more permanently to your garment. But I do plan to re-wear this sweater in the future so I just needed a temporary solution!

an orange sweater, thrifted beret, and tights are transformed into a DIY jack-o'-lantern halloween costume

To complete the look, I think it’s best to wear orange pants to really convey the idea that you’re a human-sized pumpkin! Or you could wear tights if you chose a dress.

Finally, top it off with a black beret (mine is thrifted!) to emulate the stem on top of a pumpkin! A brown beret would work great, too!

    Halloween Costume Takeaways

This jack-o’-lantern costume is easy to make and is also a great way to get into the Halloween spirit without breaking the bank! It’s a classic costume that everyone will recognize.

You could make a bunch of different variations and wear them all together as a family or group “pumpkin patch” costume.

So why not give it a try and see how creative you can get? Be sure to bookmark or Pin this post so you can re-create it later!

My Freakin' Napoleon Dynamite Character Halloween CostumeGrandma Dynamite Halloween Costume

Break the Internet, not your coccyx, with this Napoleon Dynamite-inspired Halloween costume!

If you can’t tell, this costume is based on the character known as Grandma “Carlinda” Dynamite, played by the incomparable actress Sandy Martin.

She’s sassy, mysterious (going to the dunes?!), and has the sharpest humor of everyone in the movie.

Her look is also very iconic so it was fun to recreate for a Halloween costume!

If you’re going solo this year or dressing in a Napoleon Dynamite group costume (don’t forget Deb!), here’s everything that went into putting together my Grandma Dynamite Halloween costume… it’s sure to get a laugh!

Why I Dressed As Grandma Dynamite

Dressing up as Grandma Dynamite has long been on my Halloween to-do list, I just didn’t think I had what it took to pull it off. My real-life persona is very colorful, which is Grandma’s exact opposite.

grandma from napoleon dynamite halloween costume by hannah rupp the outfit repeater

But there’s been a growing running joke on my Instagram account with all my Napoleon Dynamite references that I felt like it was OK to just do my best and have fun with the costume.

How I Put Together My Grandma Dynamite Costume

To put together my Grandma Dynamite costume, I went digging through my 72-year-old mom’s closet. Her wardrobe is full of cat and butterfly shirts as worn by Grandma Dynamite in the movie.

The jeans are my own, that I thrifted, as well as the wig. I know there might be an “ick” factor to thrifting an “old lady” wig but after properly washing and sanitizing it, I’ve never had any issues.

Lastly, I took a pair of aviator sunglasses from Dollar Tree and punched out the lenses, tied some string around the stems, and wore that around my neck!

Tips For Recreating Your Own Grandma Dynamite Costume

To really sell the costume, it’s important to embody Grandma’s personality. In the movie, Grandma is known for her funny one-liners and her love of animals. You can practice her voice and her mannerisms to really get into character. Don’t forget to add a few of Grandma’s signature phrases to your Halloween vocabulary, such as “Make your own dang quesadilla!”

If you’re going to be part of a group costume idea, consider having your friends dress up as other characters from Napoleon Dynamite. You could have someone dress up as Napoleon himself, or even as Uncle Rico, Kip, or Deb. Together, you’ll be the hit of any Halloween party.

  • Thrift Haul Confessions: What My Thrifting Habits Are Really Like

colorful September thrift haul hannah rupp the outfit repeater

    Thrift Haul Confessions

I haven’t published an official monthly thrift haul in years but I think this blog post comes pretty close! Today I’m spilling ALL the tea on what I thrift, where I thrift, and how much I actually spend every month.

I hope this helps you on your thrifting journey and inspires you to give thrifting a chance!

    Where I Thrift

I get asked a lot WHERE I thrift because I always seem to find “the good stuff” or pay next to nothing, which is unusual in most parts of the country. (Though I’ve thrifted in some major US cities and still managed to come out on top!)

For starters, I live in Wisconsin! I’m surrounded by small, rural towns and non-profit/volunteer-run thrift stores are everyyyyywhere, as well as trusty chains like Goodwill and Salvation Army. I think that makes a huge difference in the quality (ie: old stuff donated by lifelong hoarders) and the prices (volunteers don’t get paid so why not price everything at 25¢?!)

Another factor that’s unique to my situation is I am a low-income individual. I grew up in a lower-middle class family so we’ve always been very scrappy. We still don’t have a money tree so I make what little money I have go as far as possible! I frequently patronize community closets and clothing giveaways. If you’d like to learn more about that, I’ve written a post about how to find free stuff!

    What I Thrift

Now let’s talk about the fun stuff – what I thrifted this month! September was very good to me. I was able to visit quite a few stores, estate sales, and flea markets. Here’s the goods and some details on each one!

colorful September thrift haul hannah rupp the outfit repeater

Clothes are the biggest thrift category for me month after month. I really love fashion! However, I’ve gotten very selective in the last few years as my interest in sustainability has grown, as well as I’ve really come into my own personal style and want to curate a closet that reflects my personality & lifestyle!

All of the clothes I picked up this month are from free places. I don’t normally take in so much but because I was out more in search of a piece for a Halloween costume, my thrift radar was tuned in more than usual. I think what I got will get lots of love in my closet!

colorful September thrift haul hannah rupp the outfit repeater

If you don’t know, now you know… I love magazines! I have a large collection of vintage magazines from the 1930s to today. My interest lies especially with teen and fashion magazines from the 1980s. Those are also the hardest to find so I grab whatever I can when I see it.

This entire photo was from a barn sale (does it get more Wisconsin than that?!) and cost me $20. That’s higher than I normally pay but the catalogs were $10 each and in very good condition. I know a good deal when I see one!

colorful September thrift haul hannah rupp the outfit repeater

I’m not a big mug person and have trouble finding ones that I connect with. However, these two stood out on the shelves of the thrift store.

The smiley face one is part of a growing collection and was only 50¢, while the 8-ball was at a smaller shop and was $5. I happily paid up for it because I’ve never seen one like it before!

colorful September thrift haul hannah rupp the outfit repeater

This collection of wrestling memorabilia is a little out of left field, even for me!

I’m a big fan of the Rock’n Wrestling collaboration that started in the 1980s, as well as old-school Wrestlemania. And I grew up watching Friday night WWF with my brother during the time that The Rock graced our TV screens.

So this collection is a bit nostalgic for me. I don’t think I’ll grow it much bigger. I need space for my fashion magazines! lol

colorful September thrift haul hannah rupp the outfit repeater

Lastly are a few 1980s music items – some vintage magazines and a Huey Lewis CD. These magazines are a bit closer to the ones I enjoy flipping through. And of course I love anything related to 1980s pop culture!

How Much I Actually Spend Thrifting Every Month

You’re probably scrolling through my haul trying to do some mental math and tally up how much I spent this month.

In the past for my thrift haul videos, I routinely spent no more than $40 a month. I think my budget is more or less the same these days but this month I did pay up for some unique pieces!

The total amount I spent this month is $56, give or take a few cents. (That does include a couple of things not pictured, like a butter dish. haha) All in all, not far off from my average!

    My Favorite Thrifting Tips

There’s a lot to take away from this post but if nothing else, you need to be consistent with how you shop. Visit stores more than once and go often! I walk out empty handed more often than not, but I continue to go back for the thrill of the hunt!

And also, shop at a variety of thrift stores. I know this isn’t always possible due to your living conditions, transportation, etc. But if you’re able to, I highly suggest you look up some thrift stores beyond your usual stops. You might be surprised by what you find!

Having fun isn’t hard when you’re dressed as Arthur Read for Halloween!

My Arthur Read Halloween costume is based on the titular character from the animated PBS show. (’90s kids know what’s up!)

But he might be better known from the myriad of memes made infamous on the internet.

While any number of characters from Arthur can be made into a costume or a group costume, I think you can still get recognized dressing solo as Arthur.

I mean, how many other anthropomorphic aardvarks do you think go out on Halloween?!

Anyway, here’s the story of how I came up with my Arthur Halloween costume and some helpful tips for recreating it!

Why I Dressed As Arthur Read

My main inspiration for dressing as Arthur is because he’s a beloved character in our household. We’ve been watching Arthur since day one!

    arthur read halloween costume

How I Put Together My Arthur Costume

I realized Arthur’s outfit was super simple to put together and I had all the pieces in my closet to pull it off!

For the most part, everything I’m wearing is secondhand or thrifted, save for my Maurices jeans and Zenni Optical bluelight eyeglasses.

I’ve seen different variations of Arthur’s ears, with most people opting for a headband attachment. I thought it would be cute if I styled my hair into little space buns! My hair is rather short but I somehow made it work. I love adding that unique touch to my costume – and it cost me nothing!

Tips For Creating Your Own Arthur Read Halloween Costume

If you’re going to dress as Arthur for Halloween, here’s some other ideas to add to your costume to customize it:

    • Take your small pup for a walk and have it stand in as “Pal”, Arthur’s dog!
    • Have your friends or family dress up as the main characters from the show and present as a group costume
    • Carry an Arthur book or DIY his library card to show off to people
    • Stand in the corner of a party and make a fist, ala the Arthur meme!

    Maurices Shopping Hacks

    Never pay full price again!

I’ve got some insider shopping hacks to help you save big money when you shop at Maurices! Who doesn’t want to stretch their dollar when shopping retail?!

At Maurices, there are tons of ways to save that customers have probably never thought of. With a little creativity, you can save big bucks on your next shopping spree at Maurices! (I’ve put the best tips in bold for easy browsing)

Enjoy the savings and happy shopping!

    Everyday Savings at Maurices

Maurices is one of many retailers that offers great deals and specials every day. It’s one method they use to keep customers coming back. Sign up for their emails or follow the social media page of your local store to keep up with the daily sales!

The most frequently run sale is BOGO* 50% off, meaning you’d save about 25% on each set of items bought. At different points throughout the year, you can also spot BOGO 60%-75% off different product categories.

    * BOGO stands for Buy One, Get One

Maurices Shopping Hacks That Will Save You Lots Of Money buy one get one 50% off

Another sale to look for is a straight discount of 30%-50% off a particular clothing category. This occasionally applies to new arrivals and would make it a higher savings than a BOGO!

Take advantage of the year-round discount for military members. Just present your ID at the cash wrap to get 10% off. (Yes, it can be stacked with an MCC, which we’ll talk about later on!)

    Monthly Specials at Maurices

Regular Maurices customers can always expect a recurring rotation of sales every month. Most of them require you to sign up as a Reward Member or hold a Maurices Credit Card, but the savings are worth it!

Shop during double-point weekends to earn rewards even faster! They’re hosted the last full weekend of the month for Maurices Credit Card holders. There are also triple point events randomly throughout the year for regular Rewards members.

Look out for free gifts with purchase. During the first week or two of the month, there’s typically a promotion that rewards you with a free gift for purchasing a certain sale amount. Normally they’re a $100 threshold but occasionally you can spot a $75 or even $50 minimum!

Maurices Shopping Hacks That Will Save You Lots Of Money free gift with purchase

    Periodic Promos at Maurices

Maurices offers some steep discounts scattered throughout the year. Keep an eye on their emails, texts, or social media pages to know when one is coming up.

Shop during clearance events and the Semi-Annual Sale in August and December/January, with 70% off clearance and most weekends offering an additional 20%-30% off. (Stack that with your MCC and you’re talking pennies for clothes!!!)

    … pennies for clothes!!!

Maurices Shopping Hacks That Will Save You Lots Of Money 70% off clearance with an extra 30% off

Stop in during Christmas/Black Friday for huge discounts on hot categories. (Especially the 2 weeks leading up to Christmas.) Categories are typically a flat amount off, like $5 or $10. Plus your 10% credit card discount always applies!

Look out for gift card events that happen a couple of times a year. Purchase a gift card in a certain dollar amount and receive a bounce-back coupon to use the next month. There are usually restrictions on what the bounce back coupon can be used on (not clearance, or sale items) but it’s still helpful if you have your eye on something new but don’t want to wait for a sale. Bonus: use your gift card on National Gift Card Day, and you can earn double reward points!

Maurices also periodically runs events for other service people like teachers during the month of August – just in time for back-to-school shopping!

Sign Up To Save Extra at Maurices

Maurices provides programs that are free to sign up for and offer big discounts in return. Find one that’s right for you and reap the benefits!

It’s worth it to sign up as a Rewards Member to start earning points on your purchases. (Plus it makes returns hassle-free!) Being a Rewards Member also comes with a host of other financial advantages:

    • You earn a $5 coupon during your birthday month.
    • Rewards members receive bi-annual “mailers” (a fun fashion-focused booklet sent in the mail) that offer a progressive discount. $10 off $50 or $15 off $75, etc.
    • Plus many other the other promotions mentioned in the post like double or triple point weekends!

Focus on earning points strategically so you can earn $5 rewards faster. (1 dollar = 1 point, and 100 points = $5) Those double or triple point weekend events could really help you add up points (aka dollars) very quickly!

And the biggest savings of all, become a Maurices credit card holder to save an additional 10% off, every day. When you initially open a card, you get a first-time savings of 15% off! About once a month, there’s an offer to open a credit card and get a first-time saving of 20% off! And very irregularly is the chance to open a card and get 30% off your first purchase!

Pay attention to those emails and social media pages so you don’t miss out on these huge savings!

Lastly, most people don’t know about hosting a Fashion Fun Day at Maurices! Ask in-store, call ahead, or send a message to your local store to let them know you’d like to host a complimentary Fashion Fun Day with a group. (Basically a shopping party with your besties or organization. Your guest list must be vetted to ensure fairness.)

Everyone in your party will be treated to a 15% discount (stacks with store sales + MCC) and there’s a $10 gift card giveaway for one member of your group. If you use some strategy to plan your party during a deep discount event, you could be racking up serious savings!

  • What’s In My Bag: Thrifting Edition

    Essential Items for Thrifting Success

Everybody thrifts for clothes differently but it’s important to put some careful thought & planning into your thrift store outing to make it a success.

That’s a key difference between thrifting and a Target run.

In traditional retail, everything is laid out for you with clear guides, measurements, and item specifications.

But when you’re thrifting, everything is a bit of a mystery. And it takes some digging to find those stylish treasures!

In this post, I’m going to outline what I always carry in my purse when I go thrifting for clothes that helps make the shopping experience faster & less stressful.

Hopefully, these tips will be useful to you or help you look at thrifting in a new way. Let’s dive in!

    Thrifting Essential: Lists

I would feel so lost if I went into a thrift store without a list. Much like I’d be overwhelmed going grocery shopping without knowing what I was looking for!

A thrifting list comes in many different varieties – written on paper, stored on your phone in a word document, a visual wishlist on Pinterest, and many more.

I use a bit of all three when I’m searching but I find a paper list the easiest to grab and look at when I’m cruising through the thrift store aisles. (And clearly, it’s come in handy when testing Bingo daubers! lol)

Essential Items for Thrifting Success paper lists, thrifting wishlist, shopping list

    Thrifting Essential: Retractable Measuring Tape

Of everything on this list, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to carry a measuring tape! My preferred type is one that’s retractable and bonus points if I can wear it like a necklace like the one I keep in my purse.

So why is a measuring tape so important? It comes in handy when looking through clothes because you can quickly assess if they’re the right size for you regardless of the size on the tag or if a fitting room is open/available.

If you don’t have a measuring tape handy, you could try one of these alternatives in the meantime: a piece of string, a belt in your size,  or even a cord from an electronic (like your phone charger in your purse!).

Just use those alternatives the same way you’d use a measuring tape. Mark the place of your measurement and hold it up to an object you’re trying to decide is your size!

Essential Items for Thrifting Success retractable measuring tape

    Thrifting Essential: Color Guide

A color wheel is my ultimate thrifting secret for finding the best clothes. Love it or hate it, having a handful of colors you love and can rely on in your closet makes life a lot easier! But sometimes it’s hard to find those exact colors at the thrift store. Enter my color wheel!

I made my color wheel out of free paint samples from the hardware store and then assembled it with an old round carabiner clip and a scrunchie so I could wear it on my wrist, of course! (I love being as hands-free as possible!)

A color wheel is so helpful when the lighting of a thrift store is inconsistent and you’re not sure if the shirt you’re holding is blue or purple. It takes all the guesswork out of what you’re looking at!

Essential Items for Thrifting Success color wheel, color guide, paint chip samples

    Other Thrifting Essentials

The items above are all helpful when buying secondhand clothes. Though I keep a few other essentials in my purse for general thrifting support:

    • A wallet to hold all your rewards cards, gift cards, and cash.
    • Hand sanitizer to clean up messy hands as soon as possible.
    • Lip balm to keep my mouth hydrated in dry indoor climates. (If my mouth is dry or thirsty, chances are I’ll be uncomfortable while shopping)
    • Not pictured, but just as important, a reusable shopping bag! It’s good for the environment and great to have when stores don’t have bags available

    Essential Items for Thrifting Success

    Maximize Your Thrifting Trip

With the right essentials and a strategic mindset, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate the aisles of thrift stores and uncover hidden gems.

If you’d like more thrifting tips, be sure to browse around this blog a little longer! Just like at a thrift store, you never know what surprises you will find.

So get out there, explore, and enjoy the wonderful world of thrifting to its fullest. Happy thrifting!

What I Wore To Work at Maurices

Welcome to another edition of what I wore to work! (Did you catch my last what I wore to work post?)

So what do I do that requires me to dress up? I’m a social media manager for a local Maurices. I get to work around clothes all day long!

Here are some of my favorite late summer/pre-fall outfits that I’ve wearing and trying on at Maurices. Want to see them in real time? Give our Instagram or Facebook page a follow!

    Outfits I Wore From Home

Most of my social media responsibilities for Maurices actually happen at home behind a screen but, when I do go into the store, I like to have fun with my outfit.

The looks below are mostly thrifted with a few dashes of old and new Maurices products mixed in.

The pink belt bag is a heavy hitter in my closet and is currently for sale at Maurices in a variety of colors!

End of Summer Outfit Ideas From Maurices

There’s so much great dopamine dressing happening at Maurices this year and the pre-fall collection is no exception. Check out all these amazing colors and patterns! It’s right up my alley to style them.

    A Denim Try-on At Maurices

Sometime between Summer and Fall comes Denim Season. It’s an unofficial holiday in the Maurices handbook where denim rules the sales floor. If there’s a cut or wash you can think of, Maurices probably has it from one of the many size-inclusive lines that they carry!

Wearing The New Vervet Pants at Maurices

Speaking of the lines that Maurices carries, there are a couple of new ones being introduced this Fall. Seen here is a pair of high-rise straight-leg cargo pants from Vervet. Vervet is a fashion-forward line of pants with lots of trendy details!

I am digging the utility style pants right now just like everybody else. I styled them with other pieces in the store and am sold on their versatility!

Playing ‘Dress’ Up In Fall Formalwear at Maurices

Maurices is a great destination for formal pieces like maxi skirts, dresses, and high heels.

These looks I put together are a bit different from my personal style but I can easily see them working for teachers, Fall weddings, and any other occasion that requires dressing up!

    In Clothes-ing

That’s all the outfits I have to share right now! Do you need a style number for a Maurices piece or more information about something I’m wearing? Let me know in the comments!

Also, be sure to Pin your favorite outfit to recreate later!
