    WHAT I’M WEARING ?
    Thrifted vintage sequin blouse, $1

Here’s some party snaps from my rockin’ New Years Eve of sequins & board games with my sister. It’s a tradition that we never break!

In the seconds leading up to midnight, we quickly flipped the channel from an Even Stevens marathon hoping to watch the ball drop with Ryan Seacrest but were quite disappointed when it cut away and started playing a musical artist. It feels weird to start the year off without watching a shiny ball in New York crash to the ground.

Even that disappointment can’t put a damper on my spirit as I recently had an awesome screen-to-screen chat with my bff that affirmed some big blog decisions I’ve been wanting to make.

Oh and don’t forget to enjoy my last thrift haul video of 2014 down below or on my YouTube channel. Laughter is the best way to set your day/year off on the right foot!

  • DIY: Miss Frizzle Costume for Halloween

the outfit repeater hannah rupp the magic school bus liz miss frizzle halloween costume diy thrifted cosplay at home

It’s time to take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!

One of my beloved childhood characters is Miss Frizzle from the Magic School Bus book and television series.

While the ‘Frizz has starred in a lot of books, there’s unfortunately no book out there containing instructions on how to be her for Halloween.

A quick Google search can tell you that she’s a popular costume among teachers and librarians, so how did they make it work?

I can’t speak for them but in this post I’ll show you what my strategy looked like with pieces and props from my closet, the thrift store, a run to the dollar tree, and my good ol’ imagination!

Here are the simple steps that I followed to make my own Miss Frizzle costume.

RELATED: The Ultimate 1980s Halloween Costume Round-Up

the outfit repeater hannah rupp the magic school bus liz miss frizzle halloween costume diy thrifted cosplay at home

    Step One:
    Finding the perfect dress/belt/shoes

After carefully studying Miss Frizzle, I noticed a theme in her outfits (ha, no pun intended). She always wore long sleeve dresses with a collared top and the belt matched the color of the collared top. I was able to layer my own white top under a black dress that I also already owned. Done!

I just chose a pair of small heels, since the ‘Frizz is known for simple shoes. Then my outfit was starting to take shape.

    WHAT I’M WEARING:

    • Black dress
    • White button up
    • High heels
    • White belt

    Step Two: Theme

Every episode of The Magic School Bus has a theme. I chose fall since my black dress already had tiny leaves on it. Tiny. Yeah, not a word in Miss.F’s vocabulary unless she’s getting ready to shrink the class. She is an over-the-top woman.

So the week before Halloween, I pressed some leaves and followed the instructions below. (this works with ANY shapes you choose for your theme. Mine just happened to be leaves)

It’s important have matchy-matchy earrings and shoe decorations. The outfit just wouldn’t be complete without them!

the outfit repeater hannah rupp the magic school bus liz miss frizzle halloween costume diy thrifted cosplay at home

Step Three: Liz and the Bus

Without those two props, I was pegged as Mother Nature. Toy buses are in abundance at thrift stores, but mine was already at my house.

My little Liz came from the dollar store and she’s a dog toy! I had to cut her squeaker though, that was obnoxious.

I added a yellow belt (already in my closet) to act as a strap to help hold the bus all night. Hey, buses aren’t light, ok?

the outfit repeater hannah rupp the magic school bus liz miss frizzle halloween costume diy thrifted cosplay at home the outfit repeater hannah rupp the magic school bus liz miss frizzle halloween costume diy thrifted cosplay at home

As for hair, simply pulling your tresses back into a bun and adding some frizz should do the trick. I happened to dye my hair red the day before on a whim so that was a happy accident!

Each step was simple, it was just putting it together at the last minute that wore me out. If you followed all these steps then you should have yourself a Miss Frizzle costume to rival all other costumes. Good luck and have a Happy Halloween!

  • Top 5 Thrifting Tips.. As Told By a Thrift Store Legend

thrifting tips secondhand shopping thrift store advice

How has it taken me this long to write a decent blog post with thrifting tips? I figure there is already a lot of that out in the blogsophere, but today I would give it a go with my thoughts on thrifting!

Know yourself to thrift, thrift to know yourself

Excuse me while I get all deep and philosophical for a second. It can be both overwhelming and exciting to walk into a thrift store and fall in love with everything you see. It’s better to go in with an idea of who you are and what your style is so you don’t make purchases that you’ll later regret. On the other hand, you may do enough thrifting that you begin to shape and understand yourself better. So know yourself to thrift and thrift to know yourself.

RELATED: Don’t Go Thrifting Without This Free Tool!

Thrift with others who are just like you

This is important for a few reasons. If you are with a like-minded individual, then you can help each other out by picking up items the other one might want. Thus making shopping go faster! Another person is also great to help justify a purchase and give you a second opinion on things. Plus, everything is more fun with another person, right?

Set expectations but expect to have them broken

I’ll be the first to say that I want to go into a thrift store with a list and be able to find everything before I check out. But that’s not how second hand stores work! It’s ok to have a list, but set your expectations of what you’ll find really low, that way you’ll be more than pleased with your findings.

RELATED: The Secret To My Thrifting Success

Visit multiple stores. One is not enough!

Thrift stores are like candy bars in that after having one, you immediately want another. At first it feels really selfish, but after a few, you become satisfied. My point is that one thrift store is never enough! They’re all so different, so you should make a day of going to multiple facilities. Make a day of it!

    Save a lot of money

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m cheap. I like to save a buck! Thrift stores already save you money, but there are more ways to save. Examples of that are to sign up for newsletters with info about upcoming sales, shop for colored tags, take a stroll through the clearance rack, ask for student/senior/anyone discount. Don’t be disappointed if you end up spending more than expected seeing as these stores [most likely] donate to good causes and support people in need. Your money is always going somewhere good!

  • Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? | Costume

Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? Costume thrifted vintage secondhand hannah rupp

I didn’t have to search all over the world to find a Carmen Sandiego costume; she was hiding in my backyard all along!

The lady in red and I actually have a lot in common. We both rock a bold lip, are elusive about our locations, and really hit our peak in the ’90s. All it took was finding her iconic trench coat in a thrift store free bin to inspire my costume this year.

My memories of her date back to when I would play Where In The World is Carmen Sandiego on an old Windows 95 computer. And I can’t forget watching the PBS show of the same name! The word gumshoe was always so funny to me. Ok, it’s still funny, not much has changed! 😉

New Year’s Eve is a time for loud music, good fun, and.. wearing sequins for breakfast?

I love weird clothes and breaking fashion rules, but even I have to admit that wearing sequins for breakfast is a bit of stretch. Don’t worry, I didn’t really do it.

This is actually a modified version of my New Year’s Eve outfit (you can see a little bit of it on my instagram) but I can assure you that the real thing was full of pizazz, sparkle, and a lot of 1980s magic. (Ok, so I basically just described this outfit. Cut me a break, mmk?)

This was yet another outfit inspired by Pinterest. I can’t believe it took me so long to pair sequins with a casual tee! What rock have I been hiding under?

I haven’t worn this thrifted Breakfast Club tee until now. I guess I wanted to wait for a special occasion and it doesn’t get much better than New Year’s Eve.

For its first wear, I styled it with this sequin skirt, a Pepto pink moto jacket, and my favorite pork pie hat. It’s pretty rad, if I do say so myself.
