  • Budget-Friendly Personal Color Analysis: Affordable Ways to Find Your Palette

    What Is Personal Color Analysis?

Color analysis for personal style has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, thanks to the internet. Stylists, apps, and dedicated businesses are popping up to help you discover your “perfect” colors. While many are reputable, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming.

The idea of learning about your flattering colors and getting a professional analysis can be exciting. It promises a personalized color palette to empower you, navigate shopping dilemmas, and bring balance to your overflowing closet.

But what if you’re on a budget? This post is here to help! Forget spending a dime – we’ll explore free ways to discover your best colors on your own.

I believe color analysis should be just one tool in your fashion toolbox.

In recent years, I’ve become immersed in personal color analysis as a way to combat decision fatigue. It was the missing “tool” from my closet that changed everything!

In this post, we’ll explore how I utilize personal color analysis, why I love it so much, and how it helps streamline my closet overall (and how it can benefit yours too!).

    Let’s start learning!

Why You Should Care About Color Analysis

I used to think color analysis was solely about adding more clothes to your closet. But it’s so much more!

Here’s what I truly value about personal color analysis:

    • Effortless Shopping: It can make shopping for clothes a breeze by eliminating options that might not flatter you, saving you time and money.
    • Closet Confidence: It can help you cut down on closet clutter and build a versatile wardrobe you’ll actually love wearing.
    • Finding Your Style: Color analysis is just one piece of the puzzle. But once you have the colors figured out, a whole new world of color pairings open up and you’ll find yourself trying new things and exploring your personal style much deeper.

How To Find Your “Perfect” Colors For Free

Some experts use a method of holding up swaths of colorful fabric up to your skin tone to check if they’re a match. These fabrics are usually categorized by seasons like “warm autumn” or “cool summer”.

While that’s all well and good, I wanted to take a more casual (and free!) approach to finding my colors. I wanted to create a color palette that was truly unique to me. Not only are the colors flattering to my skin, but they match my personality and express who I am!

To do this, I scoured hardware stores for paint chip samples. I picked up handfuls of samples that looked appealing to me, as well as others that I didn’t like—all for the sake of experimenting and learning.

a pink rug with a Vintage book titled Color in fashion, a stack of paint samples, paint samples on a key ring

Once, I had all my samples together, the fun began. I sat in front of a well lit window (don’t skip this important step!) and had a mirror in front of me and help up each color sample one at a time to see how it “popped” against my skin.

Eventually I had a stack of color chips that looked great against my skin. The next step was to narrow them down to round out my personal color palette.

To do this, I compared all the colors together, seeing how they looked next to each other. Slowly, I built a mini-rainbow of colors that felt happy and balanced.

And guess what? It totally confirmed what I already knew all these years – cool colors are my jam, and a pop of brightness always makes me smile!

Seeing all the colors together was like a little “aha!” moment – it felt like a tiny snapshot of my personality laid out right there!

How To Use Your New Color Analysis Tool

So what do you do with all the paint samples and how do you actually implement it’s powers?

Take all of your samples and cut them down into little strips, punch a hole through the tops, and add a keyring. This makes a keychain you can have handy on you at all times.

white female with brown curly hair, pink paper background, holding up a stack of paint samples

But if you want to take it to the next level, add a bracelet, hair elastic, or another stretchy band and create a bracelet. This is the exact method I use when I’m shopping. Before heading into the store to shop for clothes, I throw on my bracelet and go!

My color palette is always with me! While shopping, I can quickly hold my color swatches against a garment to see if it flatters my complexion. (Remember, fashion is all about fun! If a piece speaks to you, regardless of color, grab it!)

This is especially helpful in stores with harsh lighting, which can distort the true color of clothes. Black and white pieces can be particularly tricky in these conditions, so having your color palette handy is a lifesaver!

a hand is holding a fan of paint samples and comparing them to a rack of colorful clothes

Other Tools To Put in Your Style Toolbox

Other “tools” I love are choosing silhouettes that help you look your best, getting measured and wearing clothes that are your true size and, of course, taking style quizzes to find out what aesthetic(s) resonate with you!

    In Clothes-ing

Remember, discovering your best colors is just the beginning! This newfound knowledge will empower you to build a wardrobe you love, shop with confidence, and ditch the decision fatigue. Plus, it’s a fun and creative way to express yourself!

Ready to dive deeper? The internet is a treasure trove of free resources on color analysis. Explore articles, watch YouTube videos, and experiment with online tools. Don’t be afraid to get creative and have fun with the process!

Most importantly, remember that fashion is all about embracing your unique personality. Your color palette is a guide, not a rulebook. So go forth, experiment with confidence, and rock those colors that make you feel amazing!

    Happy color hunting!

  • Thrifting on a Small Budget? Discover Creative Ways to Find FREE Clothes

    Where To Find Free Clothes

Getting clothes for free seems too good to be true but it’s the real deal!

For some people, thrifting for free is not just a choice but a necessity.

It could be due to a tight budget, a preference for frugal living, or a wish to live a more eco-friendly life.

There are many reasons why someone would look for free clothes and accessories.

No matter your motivation, thrifting for free is a smart and eco-friendly way to refresh your wardrobe without breaking the bank.

So let’s explore how to find free clothes that match your style and budget!

Finding Free Clothes in Real Life

    Community Closets

Many places hosts regular community clothing giveaways. These might be housed at churches or another central meeting place. Ask around or search for “free stores” online in your city.

    Giveaway Piles

If you live in a dorm, apartment, or other shared space; chances are there is a common area where people can leave items they want to donate. This might be a great way to get to know your neighbors and make a friend who matches you size and style!

    Free Boxes at Yard Sales

When you’re out at yard sales, don’t overlook free boxes on the curb. You never know what you’ll find!

    Finding Free Clothes Online

The internet has become an invaluable tool to finding anything you could possibly think of. This is especially helpful if you live in a small town without a lot of resources, or certain items are out of your price range and you need to do some deal hunting.

    Get Social

    Buy Nothing Facebook Groups

If you have a Facebook account, then Buy Nothing Facebook groups are a very direct way of connecting people in your area who are giving away free items. Join the group nearest to you and keep an eye on the posts to stake claim to their goods up for grabs.

    Website

    Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace allows you to filter for free items, including clothing, being given away by people in your local area

    Website

    Nuw App

The popular subscription clothing rental service website, Nuuly, is getting in on the clothing swap action. Now you can upload clothes, earn “coins”, and swap with other members on the platform. There is a small transaction fee of .99 cents so it’s not entirely free, but it’s still a great option.

    Website

    Lucky Sweater App

Lucky Sweater is different than the other options in this list as they’re heavily focused on the sustainability aspect of trading fashion.

Anyone can hop on the platform and start swapping but they’re more selective about which clothes get circulated. This has it’s pros and cons for the average user (ie: if you mainly buy from mass retailers) but has great benefits on the planet.

I also highly recommend subscribing to their newsletter as they’re very dedicated to cultivating community and launching new features to help members on their platform. I’ve learned a lot from them!

    Website

    Other Websites

    Freecycle

While not a dedicated clothing app, Freecycle is an online community where people give away unwanted items for free, including clothes. You can join local Freecycle groups to find free clothing giveaways in your area.

    Website

    Craigslist Free Section

Check the “Free Stuff” section on Craigslist regularly for people giving away clothes and other items at no cost. You can also post a wanted ad looking for free clothes!

More Creative Ways to Find Free Clothes

    Clothing Swap Party

Get a group of friends together and host a clothing swap! Everyone brings along a couple bags or boxes of unwanted clothes and accessories. Lay them out and make it a party with snacks, drinks, and of course a fashion show.

You could even choose to donate the leftover items and keep the sustainability movement going!

    Ask Your Friends

If you just need one or two important items (say a wedding dress guest or a job interview outfit) ask around to your friends if they have anything they’re getting rid of or have something you could borrow.

    Local Organizations or Churches

Reach out to local organizations or churches for more help specific to your area.

Some organizations may have free vouchers to use at a local thrift store and, like I mentioned above, others may also have regular clothing giveaways you could participate in.

    In Clothes-ing

Remember, embracing frugality and eco-friendliness doesn’t mean sacrificing style. With a little effort and an open mind, you can create a wardrobe that’s both wallet-friendly and fashionable.

I hope this list of resources helps you find free clothes! I have other options available to help you learn about more about where to find free clothes in this past blog post.

    Good luck and happy thrifting!

  • Want the Job? Wear This! Outfit Ideas to Help You Nail That Interview!

    [su_note note_color=”#FFFFFF” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”9″ class=””]

This post contains affiliate links & I may receive a commission if you click or complete a purchase through them.

    [/su_note]

    Dress for Success

Deciding what to wear to a job interview can be as challenging as figuring out what to wear as a wedding guest.

With different dress codes, work environments, job responsibilities—not to mention factoring in your own personal taste—it can be a lot of information to take in and process.

I’m here today to help you navigate getting dressed for a job interview that might take you outside the normal realm of employment as I have a background with mostly creative freelance gigs!

And just like with wedding wear, I encourage you to stick with staples in your wardrobe and don’t go out and buy a new outfit for every interview. And if you must, go with secondhand!

All of the outfits in this post were created using the same pair of thrifted black trousers. It’s a great base for many looks and has a way of blending seamlessly for any job or personal style.

Ready to conquer that interview in style? Let’s get started!

    What To Wear: Creative Career

One of my most notable gigs that I’ve documented here on my fashion blog are my years of personal styling at maurices. It’s a women’s clothing store with sizes and styles for every stage of life.

For my interview, I wore almost the exact combination below. I paired palazzo pants with a crop top and added some eye-catching accessories to show off my personal style and knowledge of trends and the fashion industry. It worked!

smiling white female with brown curly hair standing in front of a pink background. wearing a floral crop top, black trousers, and red accessories.

What To Wear: In The Office

Admittedly I have no firsthand office work experience but because of my above creative career, I have dressed lots of folks in business!

Once you’ve found the perfect black pants, a dressy blouse is a great top option.

Very few people I’ve dressed would ask for this shade of green but this is me, after all. If I wanted to stand out and make an impression in the corporate world, why not do it in color?

smiling white female with brown curly hair standing in front of a pink background. wearing a green button up, black trousers, and black kitten heels.

    What To Wear: Remote Work

Remote work is gaining in popularity and I’m definitely a fan—both for the convivence & accessibility, as well as the dress code.

I put together a look worthy of being on Zoom: just a top, a swipe of lipstick, and statement earrings.

You technically don’t even need the black trousers for this outfit… but what if you stand up to grab something and your Looney Tunes PJ pants appear on camera?! Better wear the black pants just in case. 😉

smiling white female with brown curly hair standing in front of a pink background. wearing a black puff sleeve blouse, black trousers, and slippers.

    What To Wear: Freelance Fashionista

Last but not least is freelance work. This covers a wide range of flexible jobs from at-home work to in-office days. But normally you’re the boss calling the shots and you get to wear whatever you want.

I’ve picked up many projects over the years and I find the interview outfits to be the most fun. For each one, I aim to to be the most ME that I can be so I instill trust in the potential collaborator. What screams more Outfit Repeater than a Girl Boss tee and polka dot blazer?

smiling white female with brown curly hair standing in front of a pink background. wearing a girl boss graphic tee, black and white polka dot blazer, and black trousers.

    Exit Review

While I can’t help you nail the interview questions, hopefully this post helped you out with what to wear to your next job interview. I’d love to hear what you end up wearing and how it goes!

  • Putting The YOU in Uniform Dressing

    Repeat After… You?

    What’s your outfit uniform?

I recently analyzed over 100 outfits from my blog archive, and to my surprise, a pattern emerged!

I found myself gravitating towards outfits that included skirts, palazzo pants, and floral print.

It’s funny considering how much I love fashion, but apparently, even I fall into a comfort zone.

Why Should You Be an Outfit Repeater?

People choose outfit uniforms for many reasons whether it’s budgetary constraints, to reduce decision fatigue, or simply being unable to break long-standing habits.

Having a go-to outfit formula takes the guesswork out of getting dressed and streamlines your get-ready routine.

Are Some People Better Outfit Repeaters?

While some tend to literally repeat the same outfit formula day after day, others often repeat colors (i.e. all black or “purple” ladies) or have a go-to silhouette that they don’t stray away from.

Unfortunately, women especially are often held to a higher standard according to social norms when it comes to outfit variety. Men seem to get a pass for repeating outfits, while women might face social commentary.

There are surely double standards at play when it comes to judgment around repeated outfits. A person in a simple uniform may project an image of concentration and focus on more important matters to some. Others, however, may perceive the same person as lazy or lacking stylistic creativity. These are outdated notions we need to overcome.

How To Build Your Own Outfit Uniform

So, how do you build your own outfit uniform and stick to it despite potential negativity? Here are some tips:

    • Lifestyle First: Choose pieces that fit seamlessly into your daily routine.
    • Confidence is Key: Select items that make you feel amazing and radiate self-assurance.
    • Find a Signature: Find simple pieces with unique details like statement sleeves, eye-catching buttons, or timeless distressing. These can become your signature elements.

Having some personal touches will prevent you from feeling like you’re wearing someone else’s prescribed outfit.

How To Embrace Being an Outfit Repeater

Once you have a uniform, are you stuck in it forever? I think those in private schools or certain professions with strict dress codes can attest that uniforms get old, but if YOU get to choose the uniform, then you get to be very flexible.

Having control allows you to evolve the uniform to match your taste and mindset. You’re never truly “breaking” it because you decide what it means.

Your uniform should serve you, not the other way around. Evolve it as your taste and needs change over time. That’s what separates an inspired personal style from an obligatory one.

How To Respond To Outfit Repeater Shamers

Let’s talk about those awkward moments when someone calls you out for wearing the same outfit. Here are some witty (and truthful) responses you can have in your back pocket:

    • “Yes, and.. ?”
    • “Thanks for noticing!”
    • “Yup, you caught me!”
    • “It makes getting ready easier for me.”
    • And my favorite “Maybe I’m an outfit repeater but you’re an outfit remember and that’s just as pathetic!” – Lizzie McGuire

You could even ask them why it bothers them so much. The key is to not let their comments make you self-conscious about your choices.

    Confessions of an Outfit Repeater

Everyone has their own reason to be an outfit repeater, and it might be worth it to try it for yourself – maybe for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Having a uniform takes out the daily stress of getting dressed and lets you focus your energy elsewhere.

While it may go against societal norms for women, choosing an outfit uniform can be an empowering form of self-expression. Don’t let outdated social conventions hold you back from finding what works best for YOU!

  • Your Essential Colorful Summer Capsule Wardrobe: Everything You Need to Pack

    [su_note note_color=”#FFFFFF” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”9″ class=””]

    Colorful Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Say good-bye to overstuffed suitcases and hello to a colorful capsule wardrobe that’ll have you looking like a ray of sunshine for your next summer vacation!

A capsule wardrobe is the smart solution when it comes to dressing for vacation. You want key pieces that you can mix and match easily without getting bored with your wardrobe while you’re away.

My secret to an exciting Summer capsule wardrobe? COLOR! And lots of it!

In this post, I’ve created a capsule wardrobe using some of the brightest shades I own, with fun silhouettes, bold patterns, and a few statement accessories to pull it all together.

Let’s take a look at the line-up and learn more about creating your own Summer vacation capsule wardrobe!

Pieces I Chose For My Colorful Capsule Wardrobe

Curating a capsule wardrobe requires a lot of thought about colors and shapes, as well as why you need one, where you’re going (if it’s a vaca, like this one!) and how everything will work together.

For the purpose of my colorful vacation capsule wardrobe, I pictured myself going away on a 7 day trip and “packed” 10 items, excluding a few accessories.

My main color story is red, green, blue, and white. I think the blue helps break it up and prevent if from looking too Christmas-y.

The pieces I chose were based around comfort and how well they all played together. I think this might be my favorite capsule wardrobe to date!

What To Wear For Sight Seeing

Every vacation should involve a little sight seeing and playing a tourist. For those kind of days, I want to look a little more laidback, be comfortable in my sneakers, and have some layers available to help with any changing weather patterns.

What To Wear For Evenings Out

Just like in your everyday life, it’s important to have pieces that can go from day-to-night. And that’s even more important when you’re on vacation and don’t have a lot of clothes to choose from.

I love all of these options and how they all help elevate a fun summer night out!

What To Wear For Shopping and Beyond

Shopping is my main hobby when I’m on vacation. (I’ve literally planned entire trips around going to thrift stores!) So of course I have a line-up of outfits ready to go and collect souvenirs. They all range from super casual to fancy tourist. I like to mix things up!

Tips For Building Your Own Colorful Capsule Wardrobe

Ready to build your own colorful capsule wardrobe for an upcoming vacation? Take this advice:

    • Come up with a color story and pick our pieces that have a good balance of solids and patterns. 10 pieces is usually a good number to shoot for!
    • Keep your footwear simple so it can match as much as possible.
    • Pick out a few accessories that will help break up the monotony of choose from the sale clothes everyday. And even style them differently. A scarf can go in your hair, around your neck, or on your purse. Likewise, a necklace can be worn as-is or used as a replacement for a purse strap. Think outside the box!
    • Get your wardrobe secondhand or thrifted so you’ll have more money to spend on experiences and meals while on vacation!

    Colorful Capsule Takeaways

Now that you have all the essentials for packing a summer wardrobe, it’s time to let your colorful style shine! Whether you’re exploring a new city, dining al fresco, or running errands, your mix-and-match capsule has you covered.

Please be sure to save this post to Pinterest for future reference!

  • 3 Ways To Style Cargo Pants

    [su_note note_color=”#FFFFFF” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”9″ class=””]

This post contains affiliate links & I may receive a commission if you click or complete a purchase through them.

    Cargo Pants Are Cool Again

In case you haven’t heard, cargo pants are cool again.

While trying new trends can be intimidating, this is one comeback kid worth adding to your closet – smartly, of course.

These 90s icons have made a mighty comeback, shedding their dad-core reputation for good.

Whether you’re a long-time cargo convert or a skeptic joining the bandwagon, there’s no denying their versatility. From laid-back casual to unexpectedly chic, I’ve got three outfit formulas that’ll have you rocking cargos in style while getting plenty of wear out of this trendy pant.

Trying out trends with intention is key, so let me show you how to style cargo pants in a way that feels fresh but still distinctly you!

    Outfit Inspo: Sporty Chic

Starting with a classic combo, we’ve got beige cargo pants (mine are from maurices!) paired with a pink striped tee and a cozy pink zip-up hoodie. To complete the look, I added some slip-on white sneakers.

This outfit has a laid-back, sporty feel that’s perfect for running errands, grabbing coffee with friends, or just lounging around in style.

white female with brown curly hair wears beige cargo pants, pink striped t-shirt, and pink zip up hoodie with white sneakers white female with brown curly hair wears beige cargo pants, pink striped t-shirt, and pink zip up hoodie with white sneakers

    Outfit Inspo: Pretty and Practical

For our next cargo pants ensemble, we’re going for a fun juxtaposition of sporty and pretty. Start with those trusty beige cargo pants, then add a flirty white blouse with delicate ruffles. Accessorize with a colorful beaded necklace and slip into some coral ballet flats.

This outfit is perfect for days when you want to look put-together but still feel relaxed. The cargo pants ground the look, while the feminine blouse and ballet flats add a touch of elegance. It’s the best of both worlds – sporty and chic, all in one stylish package.

    Outfit Inspo: Cool and Trendy

Finally, let’s take cargo pants to the next level with a super on-trend outfit. Pair the beige bottoms with a white crop top featuring a fun rainbow graphic. Top it off with a sleek blue moto jacket and matching blue platform sneakers.

This look is all about embracing your inner fashion-forward self. The cargo pants provide a cool, utilitarian base, while the crop top, moto jacket, and platform sneakers amp up the trendy factor. It’s a perfect balance of casual and edgy, making it ideal for everything from a concert to a night out with friends.

The key to nailing this outfit is to let the cargo pants be the foundation, then build up the rest of the look with statement pieces that showcase your personal style. The result is a fresh, modern take on the classic cargo pant.

What To Do When Your Style Changes

Wouldn’t it be amazing if our wardrobes stayed perfectly tailored to our lives forever?

In reality, our styles evolve along with our experiences. We cycle through different phases, and our clothes need to adapt accordingly.

Are you currently experiencing a major life change or simply feeling like your wardrobe doesn’t reflect your personal style anymore?

This post will guide you through navigating an identity shift (fashionably and sustainably!) on a budget.

Here’s what you need to know to revamp your wardrobe while staying kind to your wallet and the planet.

    When Your Style Changes

When your style changes, it can be tempting to get rid of everything in favor of wearing a new identity. Before making big decisions, try a closet audit! You might find hidden gems or items that can be upcycled to match your changing style.

To prevent potential regrets, take a look at these items you might want to hold onto:

    • Classic pieces. This could be solid colored tops, well-fitting jeans, tailer pieces.
    • Sentimental items. Remember that dress you saved up your entire first paycheck for? Items like that are irreplaceable and worth hanging on to. If it meant something important to you at one point, it will probably mean something to you in the future.
    • Garments in good condition. A piece might be in really great shape and have potential to be styled to fit your new wardrobe, or consider upcycling it with some RIT Dye or simple sewing skills to give it a new life.

After giving everything a careful evaluation, it’s ok to get rid of items in your closet that are no longer serving you.

Organize a clothing swap with friends or donate your items to charities that accept a wide variety of styles and sizes. You can also try selling higher-end pieces online or through consignment shops. Even some clothing recycling programs accept gently-used garments you don’t want anymore!

    When Your Size Changes

More often than not, you’re going to go through periods of life where your size changes—sometimes drastically—and you’ll be very frustrated when you look at the clothes from your old life.

When this happens, your instinct might be to donate everything that no longer serves you but I would recommend taking a look at what can be saved, put-aside, or totally discarded:

    • Save items that can be resized. It’s important to try to hold on to as much as you can to save yourself from the hassle of starting your closet over. Inspect the items in your closet and see if items have a seam that can be let out (or easily made smaller!), or could possibly be made to fit better by cutting them off. (ie: a dress too tight in the hips can be snipped into a blouse!)
    • Keep items with elastic. Stretchy items are great for style transitions! If you don’t have already have a stock pile of them in your wardrobe, now would be the time to thrift some to have on hand in case you ever need them.
    • Hold on to sentimental pieces. Contrary to popular advice, I think it’s a good idea to hold on to a few sentimental pieces. But instead of taking up closet space, store them somewhere special, like a keepsake box. Detachment from the expectation of wearing them again is key. Think of them as memories you can look back on, not aspirational items you’ll wear again someday.

This life transition might stir up emotions, but it’s also an exciting opportunity to rediscover yourself! It’s a chance to let go of pieces you never got around to wearing, or to finally part ways with worn-out items that you didn’t have the heart to get rid of sooner.

When Your Size & Style Change At The Same Time

When your size and style change at the same time, it will require a more comprehensive wardrobe overhaul. Here’s how to navigate it sustainably!

Following the above advice, look out for pieces that have styling potential to accommodate your new look. This might be pieces you can belt, tuck, pin, or adjust without any sewing skills.

Then, look through your closet for items that should be altered through more permanent modifications like resizing a whole garment or DIYing some flair or adding distressing.

If you don’t have these skills to pull these off, get in touch with an expert or a good friend to help made these changes!

Final Thoughts on How To Refresh Your Wardrobe Sustainably

Once you’ve exhausted going through your closet, keep things sustainable and budget friendly by adding back pieces from thrift stores, consignment shops, online resale marketplaces (I love ThredUp and Poshmark!) , or hosting a clothing swap in your community.

If a big event is coming up, you could try renting unique pieces for special occasions instead of buying new. Or borrow something from a friend!

  • 8 Common Mistakes You Make While Thrifting Clothes & How To Fix Them

    How To Thrift Clothes Better

When it comes to thrifting clothes, you might think it’s a straightforward process—just pick up pieces you like and add them to your closet.

But if you’re here, chances are you’re running into some challenges and could use some assistance with your thrifting journey.

That’s where this post comes in.

I’ll be sharing some tips and tricks that I’ve learned over the years to help you become a better thrifter.

Remember, these are general guidelines, not hard-and-fast rules. Always prioritize what works best for you, your budget, and your lifestyle!

Ready to start thrifting clothes better? Let’s dive in!

    Thrifting Mistake: Ignoring Garment Flaws

Solution: Thrifting is a treasure hunt, but don’t get so caught up in the excitement that you miss hidden imperfections.

Take five minutes at the end of your trip to inspect your finds closely.

Is that a tear you can fix? Is a missing button a dealbreaker?

A final edit ensures you only bring home pieces you can truly love and wear.

Thrifting Mistake: You’re Not Trying Things On

Solution: “But Hannah, the fitting rooms at my store are closed!”

Fitting rooms are ideal, but not always available. Instead, wear fitted clothing on your thrifting trip. This allows you to quickly slip potential purchases over your clothes for a size check.

Alternatively, carry a tape measure to grab key measurements (waist, hips, inseam) and compare them to the garment’s tag or a size chart on your phone.

Thrifting Mistake: You Think You Can Fix Everything

Solution: While upcycling is fantastic, be honest about your skills and time commitment.

Does this stained shirt or ripped jacket really need a complete overhaul?

If you don’t have the time or talent to tackle major repairs, stick to items in good condition.

Thrifting Mistake: You’re Buying Clothes You Never Wear

Solution: Thrifting is budget-friendly, but don’t fall into the trap of mass-purchasing! Just because something is cheap doesn’t mean you need it.

Consider your existing wardrobe and how this piece would fit in. Does it fill a gap or become another “maybe someday” item?

Resist the urge to over-consume and curate a closet you truly love.

Thrifting Mistake: You’re Not Finding The “Good” Stuff

Solution: Finding “good” stuff is totally subjective. Instead, look past how clothes look now and imagine what they could be!

Try things on, even if they seem out of your comfort zone. Experiment with layering and different styling techniques. You might find some incredible pieces with a bit of creativity!

Thrifting Mistake: You’re Buying Low-Quality Pieces

Solution: Educate yourself about brands and fabrics. Take a mini-course in your own closet – analyze the quality of the clothes you already own. Who made them? What are they made of?

Do some research beforehand on common fabrics and their properties (avoid polyester that pills easily!).

Knowing quality helps you identify gems that will last.

Thrifting Mistake: You’re Paying Too Much

Solution: Thrift stores often have promotions, special discounts, or color-coded sales. Learn your store’s system and shop accordingly.

Do you have a smartphone? Use it to research brand value or similar items online to get a sense of fair pricing.

Finally, don’t be afraid to explore different thrift stores – some may offer consistently lower prices.

Thrifting Mistake: You’re Thrifting Too Many Clothes

Solution: Low prices can be tempting, but resist the urge to fill your cart to overflowing.

Be mindful of your closet space and avoid impulse buys you’ll regret later.

If you do make a mistake, many stores offer returns. Alternatively, consider donating the item back to the thrift store or selling it on consignment.

    Thrift Better, Dress Smarter

Thrifting is a great way to create a cool wardrobe on a budget. But watch out for these common mistakes. Learn from them and soon you’ll be a thrifting pro!

Next time you go thrifting, relax, take your time, and discover awesome finds. Happy thrifting!
