  • You Styled It, I’m Sharing It: Whering App Looks by My Readers

    Styled by YOU!

Do you remember when I recently shared my experience using a digital closet organization app called Whering?

Well, I’m back to gush about it some more.

Since my original post, I’ve added all my warm-weather clothing that helps me get by in Wisconsin summers. I’ve also included more sunglasses and purses. (Alas, no new shoe updates, as I’m still healing from my foot surgery this past spring!)

I’m excited by the number of blog readers (and, let’s be honest, social media lurkers) who have hopped inside my virtual closet to style more outfits for me.

In this post, I’m going to try on recent outfits created by blog readers using the Whering app. Let’s take a look at how creative you all are!

Colorful And Creative Outfit Styled on Whering

We’ve got to start with a pop of color. Or more like an explosion of color!

Lisa brilliantly styled this vintage oversized sweatshirt with my flared denim overalls and accessorized it to the nines with some of my most colorful jewelry. (The necklace is even me-made!)

I did have to swap out the sneakers, but I think the look still has the original vibe!

Vintage Summer Styling Outfit on Whering

Fellow Whering user Ansleigh ambitiously challenged my closet with a double dose of vintage-inspired style!

My moto jackets are already packed away for the season, so I chose to style her secondhand outfit featuring my favorite vintage thrifted skirt, a colorful tank, and a denim jacket to anchor it. Totally something I would (and have!) worn during summer!

    Retro Glam Outfit on Whering

Ansleigh strikes out again with this retro-inspired outfit! She cleverly paired this modern green top with my biggest flared jeans and decked out the whole look with a bunch of green accessories.

While Whering doesn’t give you the option to share how to style a particular piece (tie it, tuck it, etc.), I took some creative liberty in wearing this true vintage scarf in my hair ala Thelma and Louise.

I’m ready for a fun summer adventure in this outfit!

    Girl Bossin’ Outfit on Whering

Emily took on the challenge of styling this 2010-era Girl Boss graphic tee by going full business casual.

I love that she chose these thrifted baby blue high-waisted trousers and the red scarf for a pop of color. She also understood the assignment that I’m semi-stuck in these sneakers, so they get worn with everything in my closet right now!

(While I did style some of these outfits with sandals, they were literally only worn for a quick photo. My foot is not ready for them in real life, sadly).

    What Are You Whering?

Now that you’ve had a look inside my closet and some of the fun dress-up times I’ve had with it, I’d love to see your closets!

With so many closet apps popping up, I’m sure you’re bound to try one or two. If you’re also on Whering, let’s style one another!

What do you think of these outfits? Are closet apps a game changer or too much of a headache? Sound off in the comments!

  • What’s In My Bag: Thrifting Edition

    Essential Items for Thrifting Success

Everybody thrifts for clothes differently but it’s important to put some careful thought & planning into your thrift store outing to make it a success.

That’s a key difference between thrifting and a Target run.

In traditional retail, everything is laid out for you with clear guides, measurements, and item specifications.

But when you’re thrifting, everything is a bit of a mystery. And it takes some digging to find those stylish treasures!

In this post, I’m going to outline what I always carry in my purse when I go thrifting for clothes that helps make the shopping experience faster & less stressful.

Hopefully, these tips will be useful to you or help you look at thrifting in a new way. Let’s dive in!

    Thrifting Essential: Lists

I would feel so lost if I went into a thrift store without a list. Much like I’d be overwhelmed going grocery shopping without knowing what I was looking for!

A thrifting list comes in many different varieties – written on paper, stored on your phone in a word document, a visual wishlist on Pinterest, and many more.

I use a bit of all three when I’m searching but I find a paper list the easiest to grab and look at when I’m cruising through the thrift store aisles. (And clearly, it’s come in handy when testing Bingo daubers! lol)

Essential Items for Thrifting Success paper lists, thrifting wishlist, shopping list

    Thrifting Essential: Retractable Measuring Tape

Of everything on this list, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to carry a measuring tape! My preferred type is one that’s retractable and bonus points if I can wear it like a necklace like the one I keep in my purse.

So why is a measuring tape so important? It comes in handy when looking through clothes because you can quickly assess if they’re the right size for you regardless of the size on the tag or if a fitting room is open/available.

If you don’t have a measuring tape handy, you could try one of these alternatives in the meantime: a piece of string, a belt in your size,  or even a cord from an electronic (like your phone charger in your purse!).

Just use those alternatives the same way you’d use a measuring tape. Mark the place of your measurement and hold it up to an object you’re trying to decide is your size!

Essential Items for Thrifting Success retractable measuring tape

    Thrifting Essential: Color Guide

A color wheel is my ultimate thrifting secret for finding the best clothes. Love it or hate it, having a handful of colors you love and can rely on in your closet makes life a lot easier! But sometimes it’s hard to find those exact colors at the thrift store. Enter my color wheel!

I made my color wheel out of free paint samples from the hardware store and then assembled it with an old round carabiner clip and a scrunchie so I could wear it on my wrist, of course! (I love being as hands-free as possible!)

A color wheel is so helpful when the lighting of a thrift store is inconsistent and you’re not sure if the shirt you’re holding is blue or purple. It takes all the guesswork out of what you’re looking at!

Essential Items for Thrifting Success color wheel, color guide, paint chip samples

    Other Thrifting Essentials

The items above are all helpful when buying secondhand clothes. Though I keep a few other essentials in my purse for general thrifting support:

    • A wallet to hold all your rewards cards, gift cards, and cash.
    • Hand sanitizer to clean up messy hands as soon as possible.
    • Lip balm to keep my mouth hydrated in dry indoor climates. (If my mouth is dry or thirsty, chances are I’ll be uncomfortable while shopping)
    • Not pictured, but just as important, a reusable shopping bag! It’s good for the environment and great to have when stores don’t have bags available

    Essential Items for Thrifting Success

    Maximize Your Thrifting Trip

With the right essentials and a strategic mindset, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate the aisles of thrift stores and uncover hidden gems.

If you’d like more thrifting tips, be sure to browse around this blog a little longer! Just like at a thrift store, you never know what surprises you will find.

So get out there, explore, and enjoy the wonderful world of thrifting to its fullest. Happy thrifting!

  • Practical Style Advice For Thrifty Wedding Guests

hannah is standing in front of bushy greenery wearing a green floral dress, black accessories, and a big smileStyle Advice I Hate

I’ve gotta call cap on the idea of wearing one dress to attend all your weddings.

It’s advice I subscribed to for the longest time because having a versatile closet is something I’m all about.

But never have I ever been to two of the same kind of weddings. How can you possibly own one dress that fits in with all parties? (Unless, of course, it’s a little black dress. But where’s the fun in that?)

With that in mind, I would still recommend being thoughtful of your clothing consumption, try to wear something from your own closet first, or thrift something for the event.

Here are some other ideas to keep in mind when getting dressed as a wedding guest on a budget!

    Wedding Dress Mix-Up

Weddings are expensive so while the idea of having one dress to wear to every event makes sense if you’re on a budget, it’s nearly impossible for one dress to match with the weather, season, color scheme, dress codes, vibes, and traditions of multiple occasions.

There’s too many variables with each wedding!

By all means, invest in one nice suit that can be mixed and matched in your closet for work. But when it comes to a special occasion like a wedding,  get a damn outfit that makes you feel cute and confident.

hannah is standing in front of bushy greenery wearing a green floral dress, black accessories, and a big smile hannah is standing in front of bushy greenery wearing a green floral dress, black accessories, and a big smile

A better way to cut costs is to thrift a dress (online or in-person) or borrow one from friends. Put it on there on Facebook that you need a dress to wear one time and you might be surprised!

    [irp]

    Accessorize For New Eyes

Maybe you are the type of person that bought a magical unicorn dress (or just an LBD) and that’s all you have to work with.

Your next option would be to use that dress as much as possible and update it with accessories or a glam new make-up look. Little things like a red lip or a bold necklace can take your ordinary outfit from blah to BAM!

When A Dress Is Not A Dress

I know I’m being very one-note promoting a dress to wear to a wedding when I know most of my readers hate dresses. (You’ve made it clear!)

So think outside of a standard dress and try a jumpsuit. Or re-wear that nice pantsuit you bought for work. Even dress pants and a pretty blouse will do!

If you don’t feel good in a dress, don’t do it. Find your happy medium in your closet or browse the racks of (hopefully) a thrift store to find what speaks to you and fits the occasion.

If you found this helpful, please pass it along to a friend or Pin it to your outfit inspo board on Pinterest as a reminder for later!

    Sunny Days Ahead

    Here comes the FUN! ️‍🌈

Summer is unofficially here and I took advantage of some early warm temps to wear a dress and play tourist in my hometown.

I didn’t get any pictures while I was in the wild but this outfit was too good not to share. So I came home and set up a DIY photo backdrop to capture it! What do we think?!

This dress is arguably one of the most casual in my closet but I know many people view dresses as, well, dressy. It bears repeating but you should always wear what you want any day of the week.

Don’t wait and save your “special” pieces for a day that might not come. Make today a special day and wear what makes you happy!

  • My Most Worn Outfit This Summer

It’s probably no surprise that this outfit has been my most worn summer outfit this year.

Color? Check. Comfort? Check. Compression socks… ? Well, yes, check!

While I haven’t worn this exact outfit all summer, I’ve been remixing it into a million different iterations and I still have more ideas in my head.

I know I make outfit repeating look easy but it does take creativity and careful planning. Really, it all starts with what I buy and goes from there.

Here are some quick tips to help you add pieces to your closet that you’re sure to love and get the most wear out of!

    Choose The Right Color

Choose something in a color that fits in with what you already own.

I’m still going through a yellow obsession so buying this off-the-shoulder blouse was a no-brainer! Plus it matches my previously thrifted purse almost perfectly!

What color are you loving lately?

Hannah is smiling in front of a rainbow bedsheet outdoors. She's wearing white heart-shaped sunglasses, a yellow blouse, white denim jacket, blue denim gauchos, a yellow purse, and white sandals.

    Shop With Versatility In Mind

An example of shopping with versatility in mind would be – If you know you’re going to wear a jacket all the time, does it make more sense to have a colorful one or a neutral one?

This white one is perfect for me! While I own a few traditional blue denim jackets, this white one really pops with my outfits and is just a little outside the norm.

Having a closet full of pieces that go together is really huge. It can make getting dressed so much easier to accomplish!

I talk more in-depth about this in my post about inspiring ways to get dressed so I won’t get too deep here.

But basically, when your closet is filled with pieces that can mix and match together (like everything I’m wearing), you spend less time fretting over what “matches” and free up your mental space to think about more important things, like what to eat for lunch.

Consider How The Clothes Make You Feel

When you put something on, feel good, and can’t stop thinking about it, that’s a good sign!

These pants are so silly but comfortable. They’re easy to wear with practically any top in my closet!

That feeling of getting dressed without any thought really boosts my confidence. And who doesn’t want to be more confident?

Having a closet that is on point and filled with pieces you love makes you feel pretty badass. Imagine reaching in and creating an outfit with ease. And you know it will be great because everything in it is something you adore!

    What’s In Your Closet?

Let me know in the comments how your closet makes you feel! Is it stocked with clothes you love or does it need a little TLC?

  • Fashion Trends That Rock + Tips For Buying Jumpsuits

    Jumpin’, Jumpin’

I’m usually the last person to jump on board with fashion trends but when I find one that I like – jumpsuits, for example – I hold on and don’t let go. Luckily it looks like jumpsuits are going to be in another year!

I used my Try.com membership (Update: Try.com has gone out of business!) to test out some jumpsuits from ASOS like the one I wore for Thanksgiving and New Years Eve. The number one complaint I have with them – and you’ve vented about, too – is the length in the torso is never long enough. So far, the three I’ve posted about have all made the cut for my 5’7″ frame. There were others in my package that didn’t fair as well, including one jumpsuit that didn’t even have a zipper to get into. #poordesign

Keep scrolling for my tried and true tips for finding a good one!

    Tips for Buying Jumpsuits

From my years of thrifting and buying rompers/jumpsuits, I’ve come up with a few tricks to finding the perfect fit.

    • Search out garments with an oversized cut. Lots of my vintage rompers are generously sized!

    • Size up. You can always get it tailored to your body later.

    • Choose an item with adjustable straps like my thrifted denim overalls. That way you get a custom fit without spending a lot!

    • Always, always, always try on. I would never blindly buy jumpsuits or rompers like this from online but thankfully Try.com helped me out. (This isn’t sponsored, I’m just really grateful for their service.) I try to stick with shopping in person but utilizing this service really opens up a lot of options for me! ASOS is a good site to try from, as well, since they copy their in-house designs in straight, plus, petite, tall, and maternity sizes. There’s literally something for everyone!

    ///

My greatest bit of advice is not to give up. If I’ve learned anything working at a clothing store, it’s that we never give up when a customer comes in with a clothing problem. There is always a solution if you use a little creativity!

An outfit repeaters secret weapon around the holidays are special clothes that can be reworn for all the different gatherings you’re likely going to. Even better if you can move around in it, eat in it, and sleep in it! (I’ll be doing plenty of that!)

    Star Struck

I consider myself a pop culture connoisseur, not only of the ’80s but also of modern times. Celebs definitely influence my style!

10 years ago I saw Rihanna wearing a pair of gold bamboo earrings and I shortly lucked out finding some knock-offs from Walmart – the very ones in this outfit post! The style is so popular that they continue to be imitated year after year, like these ones from Forever 21.

You might also notice I’m wearing a tiny bat ring. It’s a humorous nod to the infamous Ozzy Osbourne incident where he allegedly bit the head off a bat. Though I bought it for more personal reasons, I thought it fit in perfect with this music-inspired look.

    Graphic Jam

The rest of my outfit pays tribute to merch acquired from concerts like my (tragically modern) MTV t-shirt.

There’s only so many times you can wear a band shirt with jeans before it gets old, right? So I chose to dress up my graphic t-shirt by wearing it over a matching leopard print maxi dress and tying a small knot at my natural waist for a little flair.

    Talk about versatili-tee! 😉

    I’m With The Band

Do you ever copy outfits from bands or artists? What was the most memorable look you recreated? I’d love to hear about it down in the comments!

If you were inspired by my outfit, be sure to Pin this post or share it with a friend. 🙂

    Dollar Daze

This outfit has a secret, more silly, inspiration – this $1 planner from Dollar Tree! I’ve been hunting for the perfect, no-fuss, inexpensive planner to keep my life scheduled and this was exactly what I wanted. Not sponsored, I’m just thrilled to have found it and wanted to pass the note on to you in case you’re also looking for one.

    A No Brainer

Since this planner was so colorful, I wanted to reflect that in my look. Is it weird to match your outfit to your school supplies? Let’s just call it being on brand. 😉

I styled these thrifted overalls ($1.50 from a sale day!) with a Dollar Tree t-shirt that I used my Rit Dye tutorial to transform into a pretty ultraviolet color. Then I sported a mini neon satchel bag for something extra, and finished the look with gray accessories to offset all the colors.

    Book It
