Going For Gold: Rediscovering My Old Favorite Shirt

Do you ever donate an item and later regret letting it go?

I’ve had to part with a lot of clothes over the last decade due to fluctuating weight. What made those departures easier was my “thrifter’s philosophy” that if something was truly meant to be mine, it would eventually find its way back to me.

As luck would have it, I was recently reunited with a gold sequin tee similar to one I let go of in 2018. My original one had become too big, but I found its twin at maurices, of all places!

In the spirit of nostalgia, this new version is from the resurrected Studio Y line, a brand maurices carried back in the mid-2000s. It originally returned for a holiday collection and made another appearance this spring.

I was actually a little slow to try it on, worried it wouldn’t live up to my old favorite. As it turns out, it was the perfect fit. I waited until Christmas to officially make it mine, layering discounts and deals to snag it for only $1!

Will I learn anything from this? Nope. But will I have fun styling this gold sequin tee with my new closet after all the years? Heck yes!

    Embracing Kidult Style

Who says growing up means letting go of the whimsy and joy we had as kids?

Kidult style is all about embracing those things you loved long ago and making them work for you as an adult.

Though this term has been used since the 1950s, I only heard about it in the last couple of years and it really helped explain the aesthetic I grew up with and strived for.

I like to joke that thrifting is a way to buy back your childhood, but it’s also a way to buy the style you’ve always wanted. Whether that’s sophisticated, preppy, colorful, or anything in between.

Now that I’m a big kid with money from a big kid job, I can more easily acquire the things from my past that I always wanted or never got.

The outfit in this post is a nod to that. Let’s explore this look and redefine fashion rules that tell us what to wear!

    Closet Confession

I have to admit that this outfit wasn’t something I put together myself. If it looks familiar, it’s because it first appeared on my TikTok a while back.

I used a sound to create an outfit about “How to Dress Like You Belong on a Pinterest Board.” I didn’t expect it to kind of be a vibe but I snapped a picture of it anyways!

So, why does this outfit work? It’s all about balance. The relaxed, flowy palazzos offer a sophisticated base, grounding the cartoonish charm of Garfield’s smug grin.

It’s unexpected, eye-catching, and totally me.

    Expressing Your Inner Child

Kidult fashion isn’t just about one perfect outfit. It’s about weaving your inner child into your everyday style.

Dust off that vintage band tee, rock your favorite anime socks with a pair of sweet kicks, or let your childhood comic book heroes peek out from under a blazer.

It’s about saying, “Yes, I love the 1980s, and yes, I have bills to pay.”

I want to hear from you! How do you express your inner child through fashion? Let’s inspire each other to embrace the magic of being a kidult together!

  • 3 Stylish Ways To Wear Red Suspenders

3 Stylish Ways To Wear Red Suspenders | www.theoutfitrepeater.comHow To Wear Red Suspenders

I’m back by popular request with another round-up of women’s outfits using suspenders!

This time there’s an extra challenge – the suspenders are the color RED!

I thrifted these red suspenders shortly after my last blog post because I was still in the creative head space to try styling them.

I had a lot of fun brainstorming and coming up with new ideas to share with you.

At last, I’ve photographed all the outfits and can present to you 3 outfit ideas for colorful suspenders.

I hope these inspire you to create some colorful outfits in your own closet!

Wearing Red Suspenders With Complementary Colors

The main function of suspenders is to hold up a pair of trousers so it’s an obvious choice to wear them with denim!

I chose a pair of thrifted gaucho shorts for a fun, exaggerated look. Then I added a berry print top to pull in the red color of the suspenders and help tie everything together.

Couldn’t you just picture wearing this to go apple picking or on an old-fashioned summer outing?!

Wearing Red Suspenders With The Same Color

My favorite way to style these red suspenders is with a pair of red palazzo pants. I love how they created an overall effect! And who wouldn’t want to own a pair of red overalls?!

I continued the red theme with a vintage ringer tee and balanced everything out with white sneakers.

The look is a little juvenile but playful. I felt like I should be hosting a children’s TV series!

Wearing Red Suspenders With A Rainbow Skirt

Last but not least, I revisited wearing red suspenders with a skirt. I love this thrifted rainbow striped skirt I bought on thredUP – it goes with everything!

I leaned into the retro effect that was created and donned a plain white t-shirt, chunky red high heels, and a polka dot scarf around my neck.

What I Learned From Wearing Suspenders

Now that I’ve got two blog posts about wearing suspenders under my belt (no pun intended), I’ve learned a few things along the way!

First, it helps to have someone around to clip them in place. I didn’t personally struggle with this because of my Ehler-Danlos Syndrome but could see how it could hinder someone else!

I would also recommend playing with the adjustments to find a length you’re comfortable with.

Finally, a few of you weighed in on my last post and had suggestions for how to wear suspenders if you have a larger bust. Y’all recommended buying suspenders with a much wider strap and a long length so it stretches over the girls, or wearing ordinary suspenders to the sides of your chest.

It’s also worth considering the shape of your shoulders and their slope. If they’re very sloped AND you have a big bust, then you’ll have a trickier time overall with suspenders.

If you have any additional comments to share, please let me know! I’m open to learning from you!

Dressing Up With No Place To Go

Who says you can only get dressed up if you have some place to go? The considerate act of putting on a cute outfit to run a mundane errand is totally valid!

I have many days where leggings and a tunic are the go-to (albeit in fun colors or a cool detail!) but I have just as many days where I try to put some creative effort into what I look like for the tasks of everyday life.

What Would I Wear To a BBQ?

As I wrote on Instagram about this outfit, “Dress for the BBQ you want to be invited to this summer.” And that’s what I did!

Bright colors, soft pants, and fun sunglasses all set the tone for me!

I put together this outfit for Memorial Day weekend when I had to run to Walmart to pick up some craft supplies. But I envisioned what I might wear for a fun get together.

In reality, at Walmart, did anyone stop to compliment me? No. But did I still feel good? Yes. I was expressing a style vision in my head and felt really awesome!

When I got home, I snapped these photos so I wouldn’t forget how cool this outfit was. And if I ever get invited to a real BBQ, maybe I’ll reference these photosand outfit repeat it there??

    Stumped On Styling Palazzo Pants?

I’m sure you’ve seen those pieces of clothing that you just don’t know how to style or pull off. Pieces that are hard to style are truly the most fun because then you get to figure out new ways to style them yourself!

Palazzo pants are the ultimate in versatility for creating a multitude of outfits. I decided to dedicate an entire blog post to a pair of teal palazzo pants that I recently thrifted.

If this post doesn’t inspire you to want to buy palazzo pants, I don’t know what will!

12 Ways To Wear Colorful Palazzo Pants | www.theoutfitrepeater.com

How I Thrifted My Palazzo Pants

Before I share my 12 outfit ideas, I wanted to tell you the quick story of how I thrifted my palazzo pants.

I found them at Goodwill Janesville (WI) during a particularly good thrift outing. My cart was overflowing with fun, colorful pants, but most ended up not fitting or passing the vibe check.

As soon as I put on these teal palazzo pants, it was an instant yes for me. I started hopping around the tiny fitting room with excitement. Then my excitement grew even more when I realized they had new tags on them, and the thrift tag color was half off that day!

For the curious, these are “A New Day” brand (sold at Target) in a size medium. I’m normally a small/6, so they’re a little roomy in the waist, but cute and comfortable nonetheless! (Here’s a link to a similar pair currently being sold on Target)

Styling Palazzo Pants With… A Jacket

The flowiness of palazzo pants contrasts nicely with a structured jacket like a moto jacket or cropped denim jacket. It helps streamline the outfit and balances the proportions really well.

Styling Palazzo Pants With… A Colorful Blouse

How do you style a colorful piece? The answer: with even more color! I chose tops that match, contrast, and complement the bold teal of the pants. I also did the same with my shoes – choosing sneakers, ballet flats, and high heels. I just kept mixing things up for new looks!

Styling Palazzo Pants With… A Fun Top Layer

These 3 outfits were purely FUN! A cat vest, slouchy knit cardigan, and vintage sweatervest just add to the playfulness of the palazzo pants.

Styling Palazzo Pants With… A Statement Coat

Palazzo pants are one of those pieces that can be worn year round if styled correctly. For cold temps, layer heavily under them and wear a coat on top for added warmth. For warm temps, use the breezy fabric to your advantage and pair them with a tank or pretty cami!

    Playing Favorites With Palazzo Pants

This is just a small sampling of how versatile palazzo pants can be in your life. Let me know which outfit(s) you love AND Pin your fave to recreate later! 🙂

Every fashionista wants to dress cool but not break the bank, especially at Christmas when you want to save money and spend it on the special people on your gift list! Here’s how I sleigh my holiday outfits and navigate multiple gatherings as an outfit repeater!

    Christmas Time Again

The holidays are truly our time to shine. There are so many fun occasions to dress up for that you might get swept up in the idea that you have to buy something new to wear to all of them.

Not only is this silly because most people won’t notice that you re-wore your favorite red pants (you’d actually probably get a ton of compliments), but it can also get costly!

    One Outfit, Multiple Parties

I only buy new clothes for events every once in a while. After years of being an outfit repeater, my first instinct is to always shop my own closet after I get a party invite. (And let’s be honest, those aren’t flooding my inbox!)

But if I was the type of person who had a big social life, I could see this outfit fitting in at a friend gathering, a festive Zoom Christmas party, or watching a lights display from the warmth of my vehicle.

Plus each piece can be mixed and matched on its own. I just wore this green turtleneck for Thanksgiving last month and I plan to wear the heck of these red pants for Valentine’s Day!

    Treat Your’elf

Because my entire outfit was sourced secondhand for a steal; that means I have enough money left over to buy some awesome (and thrifty) gifts for my family & friends this year.

Buying online from thredUP also meant I got exactly what I wanted without having to compromise my personal style this holiday season. I just typed in what I wanted in the search bar, like “white moto jacket”, and found several options!

I love that thrifting is a fun and affordable way to treat yourself and others!

What kind of secondhand gifts did you buy for others this year? My go-to is always books and games! (ignore that if you’re someone in my family lol)

Fall is in full swing and I’m sure you’ve all got a milelong bucket list of activities to fulfill!

    Me? Not so much.

I’m continuing to take it easy this season and have converted an “activities” list into an outfit list. That’s what a fashion girl does, right?

To really top it off, I created a mini pumpkin patch in my own backyard so I can fulfill my outfit fantasies in a seasonally appropriate setting! * extra and I know it *

So whether you’re hitting up an apple farm or Netflix and chillin’ with a scary movie, maybe one of my outfits will spark an idea for you!

    Color-fall Jeans & Sweater

Fall is really a beautiful season because of the changing colors. I like to switch out summer pieces for fall but keep one thing – COLOR! The shades and hues just change a little bit.

Yellow still remains one of my faves so I paired up this bright sweater with dark olive skinny jeans. To keep it somewhat cohesive, I chose a neck scarf that ties both colors together and a matching yellow beret.

This is seriously one of my most favorite outfits in a long time!

    Girl Bossin’ In Orange Pants

If you missed my last blog post with a big announcement, I’m employed in the fashion industry again. It’s such an exciting time to jump back in!

So I wore my “girl boss” graphic t-shirt (I’m loving all the satire surrounding the phrase on TikTok!) and tried something different with a white moto jacket. I’m digging the monotone vibe!

Then I (pumpkin) spiced it up with my faaaavorite orange palazzo pants. Altogether it’s kind of a cool, quirky fall look.

    👗 WHAT I’M WEARING 💄
Thrifted/thredUP moto jacket and orange pants, bought w/ store credit | Thrifted tee, $1.50 | Outlet store white booties, $20

A Sweatshirt That Is SO GOOD

I’ve already worn this outfit for quite a few events like shopping, a quick stop at a corn maze, and sitting around my house.

The sweatshirt is a classic, comfy piece and I wore it with yellow pants to kick it up a notch. I think that helps it from being an ordinary top + jeans look.

    Pumpkins & Polka Dots

I know I’ve used the word “favorite” quite loosely in this post and it’s honestly a pet peeve of mine… but this babydoll dress is my FAVORITE baby doll dress! There, I said it.

It was easy to style with some knock-off Doc Martens and a pork pie hat. It’s a very classic “me” outfit and I couldn’t have felt more comfortable to be wearing it!

    What Will I Wear Next?

    Which outfit was your favorite?

If you’re anything like me (a very sleepy spoonie!) maybe I can make this “outfit bucket list” a tradition. Rather than choosing to go places every season, I’ll just dream about what I want to wear! What do you think?

When I showed you this too-small star printed romper in my April thrift haul video, I already had a vision of how to transform it. Because I’m not big on sewing projects, I decided a simple solution was to cut off the romper below the elastic waistline to create an out-of-this-world blouse.

    A Perfect Match

It was like the stars and moon aligned for me because the DIY blouse ended up being the perfect piece to wear on May 4th when I attended the grand reopening of the Zodica Perfumery store in Monroe, Wisconsin.

    What Is Zodica Perfumery?

Zodica Perfumery is a female-run small business that sells a range of scented products from perfume to hair oils, all tailored to your astrological sign. The notes are thoughtfully chosen to reflect the personalities of the wearers and they’re unlike any other product on the market!

    Perfume Party!

You may have seen Zodica Perfumery products being sold on QVC or in a boutique near you, but Monroe is lucky enough to be home to their flagship store! They recently worked hard on remodeling it and it totally paid off. The environment really captures the calm and ethereal vibes that you get from their line of scented products.

To celebrate the grand re-opening, they threw a big party with live music, refreshments, a new moon intention circle, and tarot card readings.

I was excited to have my future read because I’ve never done that before. Everything that was drawn in the cards sounded pretty spot on about my life. (Well, we’ll have to see what the future holds!)

    My Outfit

And as you might have guessed, my outfit was purposely planned to match the festivities.

My necklace is another DIY project that was created using the charm that came on the packaging of my spritzer perfume. It’s a tiny Pisces symbol that I linked onto an old chain. Without being biased, I would say that the Pisces scent is my favorite. 😉

The reusable tote bag in the photos was a free gift from the party and just happened to match my attire flawlessly, don’t ya think?

  • A Modest Summer Outfit Idea That’s Actually Really Cute!

It’s about time I cover this topic on my blog…

    Simple Summer

I love shorts and tank tops as much as the next person but sometimes the day calls for a modest summer outfit.

There are lots of reasons someone might want to cover up in the summer. It could be body issues, religious reasons, skin concerns, or some other personal reason. Regardless, here’s an outfit that will you keep cool and conservative all summer long!

    Modestee

This pale pink tee is a find from my June thrift haul, when I expressed an interest in finding crop tops to wear with these black palazzo pants. The outfit turned out exactly as I had anticipated and was perfect for wearing to a conservative family dinner!

I added a few accessories to further personalize the look. The bangles are a part of a vintage set from my late great grandma, the necklace was a gift, and the handmade earrings always elicit comments from strangers saying they look like snowballs. Why not wear snowballs in the middle of summer?!

    Cool Clothes

I grew up in a church environment so I’ve probably worn or know about pretty much every modest dressing tip in the book.

Aside from an outfit like I’m wearing here, you might consider the following: maxi dress, maxi skirts, culottes, kimonos, gauzy long sleeve tops, light scarves, and almost anything made of cotton is a decent option for staying comfortable without revealing too much skin.

    Your Style, Your Rules

Sometimes people might not understand why you’re choosing to wear jeans on a hot summer day but please don’t let them discourage you from wearing what you want.

I’ve noticed a double standard that women especially get picked on for not wearing enough clothes in the summer AND for wearing too much. It seems there is no balance that’s completely acceptable. So you just gotta do what you feel comfortable with and ignore the cranky people who have probably been in the sun too long. 😉
