  • Winter Capsule Wardrobe Idea: Thrifted, Colorful, and Cool

    Colorful Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Winter is both the best and the worst time to get dressed. On the one hand, it’s cold enough to layer your outfits and create interesting looks. On the other hand, you’re freezing, and everything ends up covered by a coat.

Despite these pros and cons, I still love playing dress-up in winter—even if it’s just for fun while working from home. To keep things exciting while stuck indoors, I created a colorful capsule wardrobe to gamify my winter style.

For this capsule, I asked my Instagram followers to help me choose a color palette. Then, I pulled 10 pieces from my closet that matched the vibe. From there, I experimented with different combinations and came up with some really fun outfits!

As you scroll through this post, I hope you embrace the same playful spirit. Some outfits turned out better than others, but they all came from the joy of experimenting with what I already own.

Enjoy this little burst of winter wardrobe inspiration!

How I Chose My Colorful Winter Capsule Wardrobe

As I mentioned, my Instagram followers were the ones behind choosing the color palette for this capsule wardrobe. I offered them a choice of four different color combos, and this is the one they chose:

It’s a cool, dusty situation. A little different for me, but I love a challenge!

After learning about the color palette, I went through my closet to find 10 pieces (10 is always my favorite for capsule wardrobe challenges) and pulled a selection of tops, bottoms, basics, and statement pieces.

Essentially, I wanted a well-rounded wardrobe that I could really play with and not get bored of. It was just a bonus that almost everything was thrifted!

Altogether, this is what I picked out and used to make the outfits in this post. Coats, shoes, and accessories were all bonus items that I didn’t count towards my 10 items!

Colorful Winter Capsule Wardrobe: A Sequin Skirt

Nothing can get you through the long, dark days of winter like sequins! For me, I chose this beautiful vintage teal skirt that I thrifted last summer.

The color is very reflective of freshly fallen snow, while the sparkles keep my spirits bright. It’s also a great transitional piece to go from the holiday season into the winter months.

If you’re in a cold climate like me, remember to layer up with tights if you have a skirt or dress in your winter capsule wardrobe. 😉

Colorful Winter Capsule Wardrobe: Fun Pants

Fun pants are just a staple of my life year-round, but for the purpose of this challenge, I chose a powder blue pair of trousers.

These can be dressed up with luxe tones or high heels, or dressed down with a graphic tee and jeans.

I’m obsessed with the color and can’t wait to remix them with more hues in the future! What color should I pair them with next?

Colorful Winter Capsule Wardrobe: Classic Denim

Finally, we have a classic pair of denim. I’m sure these are a staple in most people’s wardrobes, as they’re easy to pair with almost anything.

I tried a few styling tricks, like tucking, adding scarves, and layering, to add interest to an otherwise ordinary article of clothing.

    In Clothes-ing

What would you include in your winter capsule wardrobe? I’d love to hear your take on this challenge!

If you enjoyed it, please be sure to Pin it to try out later or send it to a friend who could use the inspiration.

    Colorful Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Say good-bye to overstuffed suitcases and hello to a colorful capsule wardrobe that’ll have you looking like a ray of sunshine for your next summer vacation!

A capsule wardrobe is the smart solution when it comes to dressing for vacation. You want key pieces that you can mix and match easily without getting bored with your wardrobe while you’re away.

My secret to an exciting Summer capsule wardrobe? COLOR! And lots of it!

In this post, I’ve created a capsule wardrobe using some of the brightest shades I own, with fun silhouettes, bold patterns, and a few statement accessories to pull it all together.

Let’s take a look at the line-up and learn more about creating your own Summer vacation capsule wardrobe!

Pieces I Chose For My Colorful Capsule Wardrobe

Curating a capsule wardrobe requires a lot of thought about colors and shapes, as well as why you need one, where you’re going (if it’s a vaca, like this one!) and how everything will work together.

For the purpose of my colorful vacation capsule wardrobe, I pictured myself going away on a 7 day trip and “packed” 10 items, excluding a few accessories.

My main color story is red, green, blue, and white. I think the blue helps break it up and prevent if from looking too Christmas-y.

The pieces I chose were based around comfort and how well they all played together. I think this might be my favorite capsule wardrobe to date!

What To Wear For Sight Seeing

Every vacation should involve a little sight seeing and playing a tourist. For those kind of days, I want to look a little more laidback, be comfortable in my sneakers, and have some layers available to help with any changing weather patterns.

What To Wear For Evenings Out

Just like in your everyday life, it’s important to have pieces that can go from day-to-night. And that’s even more important when you’re on vacation and don’t have a lot of clothes to choose from.

I love all of these options and how they all help elevate a fun summer night out!

What To Wear For Shopping and Beyond

Shopping is my main hobby when I’m on vacation. (I’ve literally planned entire trips around going to thrift stores!) So of course I have a line-up of outfits ready to go and collect souvenirs. They all range from super casual to fancy tourist. I like to mix things up!

Tips For Building Your Own Colorful Capsule Wardrobe

Ready to build your own colorful capsule wardrobe for an upcoming vacation? Take this advice:

    • Come up with a color story and pick our pieces that have a good balance of solids and patterns. 10 pieces is usually a good number to shoot for!
    • Keep your footwear simple so it can match as much as possible.
    • Pick out a few accessories that will help break up the monotony of choose from the sale clothes everyday. And even style them differently. A scarf can go in your hair, around your neck, or on your purse. Likewise, a necklace can be worn as-is or used as a replacement for a purse strap. Think outside the box!
    • Get your wardrobe secondhand or thrifted so you’ll have more money to spend on experiences and meals while on vacation!

    Colorful Capsule Takeaways

Now that you have all the essentials for packing a summer wardrobe, it’s time to let your colorful style shine! Whether you’re exploring a new city, dining al fresco, or running errands, your mix-and-match capsule has you covered.

  • A Colorful (And Thrifted!) Spring Capsule Wardrobe

A Colorful (And Thrifted!) Spring Capsule Wardrobe

    Colorful Capsule Wardrobe For Spring

Spring is here! The sun is shining! Floral is trending! (Groundbreaking!)

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to plan outfits, I’ve put together a colorful (and thrifted!) Spring capsule wardrobe to get your creative juices flowing.

There’s no need to go out and buy a whole new spring wardrobe – get creative with what you already have in your closet to create a custom seasonal wardrobe!

What I Picked For My Capsule Wardrobe

The base for any capsule wardrobe is a cohesive color story. For me, I started with my newly thrifted rainbow striped cardigan and built it from there. Most pieces were thrifted! (If you’re curious about something, just ask!)

My color story ended up being very saturated and bold – just the way I like it!

The pieces themselves were chosen based on their mixability. Any balanced wardrobe needs tees, tanks, sweaters, cardigans, pants, and denim jackets. All in all, I picked out 11 pieces (because 11 is my lucky number) and considered my accessories as “free” items.

During my time creating this post, I was able to come up with 21 outfits! Of course, there could be a lot left on the table – add or remove a jacket, do more creative layering, etc.

    How I Remixed My Closet

Once the 11 pieces were picked for my Spring capsule wardrobe, the mixing came very easily. I started playing around and pairing the colors together to create new outfits from my existing closet!

The Benefits of a Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is not a new concept at all. I’ve even shared a Winter capsule wardrobe, Fall capsule wardrobe, and Summer capsule wardrobe on my blog before!

They come in handy when you’re packing for a vacation and you need to be considerate of space in a suitcase and what you’ll wear during your trip.

But during your everyday life, a capsule wardrobe can be beneficial when you’re transitioning your wardrobe (body changes, life shifts, etc).

Having a planned out wardrobe of a few select pieces that can be mixed and matched will really speed up your get-ready routine and take away any decision fatigue you’re experiencing. And couldn’t we all use something to make our lives easier?!

  • Colorful Fall Thrifted Capsule Wardrobe: 10 pcs, 25+ Outfit Ideas

colorful graphic fall thrifted capsule wardrobe with 10 itemsColorful Fall Thrifted Capsule Wardrobe

You don’t need more clothes, you just need to get creative with what you have!

I love putting together these types of posts, demonstrating the power of a capsule wardrobe.

For so long, capsule wardrobes have been synonymous with minimalism and kind of boring. (I also don’t know how relevant they are anymore but I have my reasons for this post!)

I can promise that there is no boring here! I believe it’s possible to have a limited wardrobe but to make it exciting.

For my third installment of a colorful capsule wardrobe (see: summer capsule wardrobe and my winter capsule wardrobe) I decided to tackle fall, which is arguably the most vibrant of all seasons. Plus we’re all probably yearning for some layering after a hot summer!

I asked on my Instagram if this is something you wanted to see and it was a resounding YES! I’m so glad that I can make this happen and share my vision for a small and colorful wardrobe with you.

If you’re curious how it went, keep scrolling for some epic outfit inspiration!

The Importance of a Capsule Wardrobe

As I mentioned above, I do have a reason to try to keep this capsule wardrobe trend thing going.

We’re definitely living in an interesting time where consumerism and interest in sustainability are colliding. There’s really not a perfect solution or one-size-fits-all choice for everyone. We’re all on our own journeys with fashion and consumption.

But one way to meet in the middle is to be conscious of the items you’re buying. A capsule wardrobe – whether it’s 30 pieces or your entire closet – can be a carefully curated selection of clothes that all mingle together.

I hope that you’re inspired by this post and can see the benefit of buying clothes that can be re-worn a million different ways. (Maybe not a million, unless you get crafty. 🤣)

    Creating a Thrifted Capsule Wardrobe

Choosing pieces for a capsule wardrobe is one of my favorite things. Some tips to keep in mind when building your own are:

    • How many pieces do you need? (Alternatively: how long do you want to do it so you know how many clothes you need?)
    • What color story are you using?
    • Is there a theme or common thread you’re aiming for?

My answer to those questions are:  10 pieces for 1 week, I Googled a random color story, and my theme was thrifted and Fall!

Using this equation, you can come up with a capsule wardrobe for fun or financial purposes, or even use it when packing for a trip!

    My Thrifted Capsule Wardrobe Pieces

With the number 10 in mind and a color story picked out, I went through my closet and chose clothes that fit the bill.

They are: little orange dress, orange tee, yellow tee, white turtleneck, leopard print pullover sweater, baby blue cardigan, cognac moto jacket, maroon jeggings, leopard print skirt, and burnt orange palazzo pants. (If I did it all over again, I’d swap out the orange tee for a graphic tee. I think it would have expressed my personal style a smidge better.)

I didn’t have any restrictions on accessories but I did seem to pull the same ones again and again. Lots of slouchy hats, neck scarves, and low-heeled booties.

Wearing My Thrifted Fall Capsule Wardrobe

Next came the really fun part – I hung up all the pieces together and let my imagination run wild! In total, I came up with 28 outfits and I’m very satisfied with that number. Let me know what you think of the looks!

    ///

    👗 WHAT I’M WEARING 💄
❤️ All pieces are thrifted except the jeggings, shoes, oversized scarf, and slouchy hats. ❤️

    Capsule Wardrobe Recap

Once again, I just want to say how fun this was! Everybody should try this at least once as a creative exercise.

And just like at the end of a trip, I was SO happy to be reunited with my full closet again. This way of getting dressed definitely works for me shorterm and helps eliminate a lot of the brain fog/decision fatigue related to my health issues, but I wouldn’t want to do it forever.

If you found value in this post, please be sure to Pin your favorite looks to recreate later! 📌

  • A Colorful Summer Capsule Wardrobe | 10 Pieces, Countless Outfits

hannah rupp the outfit repeater colorful summer capsule wardrobe challenge

This capsule wardrobe challenge is not for the faint of color!

    Colorful Capsule Wardrobe

Capsule wardrobes – meaning you only mix ‘n match a certain portion of your closet – have long had the reputation of being part of a minimalist lifestyle but I think they serve really well as a guide of what to pack for vacations and trips.

My last capsule wardrobe challenge was different because I wore 10 pieces and let an app pick my outfits. This time I’m in full control and put together more than 30 looks! It was important to me that I could present so many options because I found other capsule wardrobe guides on Google really lacking in the visuals department. (Aside from this wonderfully executed version from Kelly of Studio DIY) So hopefully this is helpful to my fellow visual learners.

    What I’m Wearing

A common rule for capsule wardrobes is that the colors should all be cohesive and generally are black, white, and neutrals. Few dare to go with bright hues but that’s what I picked and kept them cohesive by choosing jewel tones. I still used a few neutrals but the overall vibe is still very much a rainbow!

Another important feature of my capsule wardrobe is that with the exception of my sandals from Lulus, everything is thrifted. A capsule wardrobe on a budget? Now we’re talking! However, I am including links to similar pieces I found online that are also budget-friendly in case you see a look or two you want to recreate.

Now that you know what I’m wearing, let’s see some mega outfit inspiration!

    Red T-Shirt Dress

If you’re looking for a dress with versatility and comfort, a t-shirt dress should be your top choice. It’s casual but can still pull double duty for nice events because, hello, it’s a dress!

    Patterned Shorts

As you can see throughout this entire post, these shorts really pulled their weight for me. They were the perfect pop of pattern and a cool addition to any outfit!

    Plain Colored T-shirt

I love playing with a plain t-shirt because you can really customize it to your style. Roll up the sleeves, tuck it in, leave it out, and so much more!

My shirt is also a custom color (ultra violet) you might recognize as the color of the year from my Rit Dye tutorial.

    Colorful Blouse

I chose my favorite yellow blouse to be a dressier piece in this wardrobe challenge. Both the sleeves and the color made it an interesting top to layer!

    Solid Colored Dress

I love the pop of color this dress normally adds to my everyday outfits but I love it even more seeing how well it plays with other colors in this challenge!

    Bright Skirt

Not to be mistaken with the green dress; the teal skirt added something extra to pretty much all of my tops!

And if your vacation takes involves time travelling to the 1970s, here’s a look for that.

There are many more combinations to be made with just these 10 pieces but hopefully this gets your creative juices flowing. I know it gave me wanderlust and I want to throw these clothes in a bag and hit the open road! haha

A big thank you to Facebook and Patreon for picking this outfit challenge. It was a lot of fun to put together! If you enjoyed it, please be sure to Pin it or share it with a colorful friend. 🙂

What I Learned Doing a Winter Capsule Wardrobe Challenge hannah rupp the outfit repeater

10 garments, 7 days, and 1 winter capsule wardrobe challenge later…

    We Made It!

This has been a week. To catch you up, I completed a capsule wardrobe challenge in which I wore 10 articles of clothing in 7 days and each outfit was randomly assigned to me by a closet app called FashionYou. It was a whirlwind, to say the least.

The purpose of this challenge was to share outfit inspiration with you, especially if you’re working with a limited wardrobe due to a vacation or the like. But for me, this was more of a personal challenge because I’ve spent the last 4 months adjusting to life with constant fatigue so anywhere I can take a shortcut in life (ie have an app plan my outfits for a week) is a very welcome thing!

What I didn’t plan for was not being able to shoot the photos beforehand so every post was shot & written the day it went live. That’s not my normal blogging routine and it was especially an ambitious schedule for 7 days straight – even if I wasn’t taking 2 hour naps everyday!

I couldn’t have made it through without the new addition of my indoor photo set-up. It’s been a dream to be able to take photos indoors (especially in the winter) and that’s finally a reality. A HUGE thank you to my Patreon donors for making that possible!

Despite everything, I’m really proud of this challenge and the outfits. If they gave you even a few ideas of how to mix & match your clothes then I’ve done my job!

Let’s take a look back at the last 7 days:

Winter Capsule Wardrobe Challenge: Day 1

The week started off strong with this very purple-y outfit inspired by Prince.

I already called this cute combo as my favorite from the week and I’m sticking with it!

And last but not least is this girl scout troop member gone rogue. I didn’t expect to like this pattern smashing so much but it’s growing on me!

Winter Capsule Wardrobe Challenge: Day 7

    And last but not least…

    What I’m Wearing

It’s the final day of my winter capsule wardrobe outfit challenge so I saved the best for last!

My FashionYou app randomly assigned my polka dot mini skirt and striped turtleneck to be worn together. Now, I love a good pattern mixing but, I had my doubts these would look good together… that is until I added a few key accessories and then I fell in love with this outfit.

There’s been so much color used in this challenge that I decided to break things up and wear black tights to compliment this look. I love the final outcome with the addition of this vintage beret and “happy” pin I found last year at Walmart. “Happy” is also the way I would describe how I feel now that this challenge is over. Oy vey! What a week!

If you missed any post this week then I’ll be publishing a big ol’ round-up later today. In the meantime, why not Pin this post or share it with a friend? That would make me so happy! 🙂

Winter Capsule Wardrobe Challenge: Day 6

    Hats off to this outfit!

    What I’m Wearing

A couple days ago I teased that the app planning my outfits this week wasn’t that smart but considering it put me in this corduroy dress for a third time this week is totally something I would do and therefor pretty genius. Third time’s the charm!

The other main part of the outfit it picked is the olive green dress from yesterday. If that’s not smart pairing, I don’t know what is!

Two Dresses Are Better Than One

I really love the look of the olive green & dark purple together so I played around with that and added a bunch of extras in the same color family. You’ve seen the purple tights already this week but the purple bowler hat, gray skull scarf, and homemade pink flower ring are all a first this week.

There’s still one more outfit left in my capsule wardrobe challenge but I want to go on a limb and say this was my favorite look. I feel like the other times I wore this purple corduroy dress were just so-so but this one is very me.

    The Moody Blues

It’s probably no surprise why I picked to wear such dark colors. We’re in the thick of winter and I think most people naturally gravitate towards wearing darker colors to reflect the weather outside.

That was my train of thought, anyways, so I added this multi-patterned scarf and these navy blue tights to give my outfit an overall cool tone. Cool… winter… get it?!

Another day, another outfit planned by a robot.

    What I’m Wearing

It’s day 4 of my winter capsule wardrobe challenge and I’m sweating a bit as the phone app I’m using to create random outfits is already running out of ideas. I guess robots aren’t quite ready for a takeover if they can’t even plan outfits for 7 days in a row.

But it did some up with this outfit for today! I’m wearing a vintage sweater with a purple corduroy jumper on top and the same gray ballet flats you’ve seen with every other outfit. I’m not sure if I’d ‘jump’ for joy over this look but at least it’s something.

    Are You Kidding Me?

This outfit is cute but it definitely feels childish. I decided to give into to it’s pre-school vibes and added these adorable tights from my collection that never get worn. I guess there aren’t many occasions I have to wear gray tights with sparkly bows on them!

The only “aging” I tried doing was swiping on a very bold shade of pink lipstick and matched my earrings to it. Kids aren’t allowed to wear lipstick so that works, right? Overall, I’m ok with this look!
