  • How To Combine Modern & Vintage Styles For One Throwback-Inspired Outfit

    Style Merger

Feeling stuck in a fashion rut?

One simple way to get out of a funk is to look to the past.

As thrifters, we’re surrounded by amazing vintage styles just hiding out on the racks waiting for us to take them home.

But once they’re in your closet, it can be tough trying to merge the old styles with the current trends in your closet.

That’s where this post comes in handy as I navigate combining modern and vintage styles for one throwback-inspired outfit!

    Everything Old Is New Again

Before you start putting together outfits, you should determine what kind of vintage you want in your closet.

Shopping for vintage clothes at secondhand stores can be a lot of fun but not all vintage is created equal.

When assessing pieces to add to your closet, try to find past trends that match the vibe of your closet.

If you normally wear neutrals and business casual, then a neon floral muumuu wouldn’t make much sense—as fabulous as it is to look at.

Everything old is new again so whatever you wear today was once a style of yesteryear! Try to find those styles and you’ll have a much easier time combining vintage with modern trends.

If price or sizing is an issue, focus on accessories with unique details, like a scarf or a statement necklace!

How To Combine Modern and Vintage Styles

To practice what I preach, I pulled out this vintage navy blue poncho with an abstract colorful pattern on it. It’s probably from the 1970’s but reminds me of one I wore as a kid back in the 1990s. It holds a lot of nostalgia for me!

Because I love color, this is a natural fit for my wardrobe. It wasn’t hard to find pieces that matched it! I went with a red turtleneck, a red beret, these outrageous flared denim jeans I got from Maurices last spring, and a pair of cognac stacked heel booties.

All the modern elements almost make you forget the poncho is from 50 years ago! (That felt weird to type lol)

    In Clothes-ing

There are no hard or fast rules to wearing vintage but this is a simple outline for getting started or, like I said at the beginning, to help you get out of a style rut.

What is your favorite decade to wear and how do you incorporate it with modern trends? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Every fashionista wants to dress cool but not break the bank, especially at Christmas when you want to save money and spend it on the special people on your gift list! Here’s how I sleigh my holiday outfits and navigate multiple gatherings as an outfit repeater!

    Christmas Time Again

The holidays are truly our time to shine. There are so many fun occasions to dress up for that you might get swept up in the idea that you have to buy something new to wear to all of them.

Not only is this silly because most people won’t notice that you re-wore your favorite red pants (you’d actually probably get a ton of compliments), but it can also get costly!

    One Outfit, Multiple Parties

I only buy new clothes for events every once in a while. After years of being an outfit repeater, my first instinct is to always shop my own closet after I get a party invite. (And let’s be honest, those aren’t flooding my inbox!)

But if I was the type of person who had a big social life, I could see this outfit fitting in at a friend gathering, a festive Zoom Christmas party, or watching a lights display from the warmth of my vehicle.

Plus each piece can be mixed and matched on its own. I just wore this green turtleneck for Thanksgiving last month and I plan to wear the heck of these red pants for Valentine’s Day!

    Treat Your’elf

Because my entire outfit was sourced secondhand for a steal; that means I have enough money left over to buy some awesome (and thrifty) gifts for my family & friends this year.

Buying online from thredUP also meant I got exactly what I wanted without having to compromise my personal style this holiday season. I just typed in what I wanted in the search bar, like “white moto jacket”, and found several options!

I love that thrifting is a fun and affordable way to treat yourself and others!

What kind of secondhand gifts did you buy for others this year? My go-to is always books and games! (ignore that if you’re someone in my family lol)

Fashion comes and goes, but style is forever.

    The Trend Trap

The allure of fashion shows sucks us into this train of thought that we should be updating our wardrobe for every season and keeping up with trends. For some people, this works. For others, like myself, we prefer to strategically buy pieces that reflect our personalities and our personal styles. (Whatever that looks like from day to day.)

It’s so wild to think that once upon a time, every piece in my outfit was hanging out on the racks at a mainstream retailer and it was trendy. Then suddenly, one day, it wasn’t trendy anymore and ended up at a thrift store where I swooped in and bought it.

It really makes you stop and think about the lifecycle of clothes both on a global spectrum but also within your own closet. Do you trade out your clothes pretty quick (thrifting and then re-donating months later) or do you hang on to clothes for a long time?

    What I’m Wearing

This outfit is the perfect example of what I’m talking about.

More than half of it was bought from thredUP, the largest online consignment store in the US. The white moto jacket is my newest purchase while the pink sweater and flared jeans were bought a year ago. I had a vision that they would play nicely with my wardrobe for a long time to come and I was right!

And the rest of my look is a combo of new and old secondhand pieces I’ve acquired through the years. (Recognize my “ugly” shirt? It’s still going strong!)

    Making Your Clothes Last Longer

When I say “make your clothes last longer,” I don’t mean in a laundry way. There are already laundry gurus out there that can teach you those tips and tricks but I’m not one of them.

What I’d like to share is more about making thoughtful buying decisions, and other tips to make your clothes last longer.

    1. Buy only things you have a vision for. Mindlessly buying clothes without a purpose will lead you to a closet of mismatched clothes and the dreaded having-nothing-wear-syndrome. Shop carefully, go with a plan, and buy things you really really really love.

    2. Look for quality pieces. As mentioned above, this multi-patterned button-up has been with me the longest and is arguably made to last! It’s also the oldest piece I’m wearing, likely originating in the early ’90s.

    3. Mix and match your clothes. Get as much wear out of what you currently own. Be an outfit repeater. I promise it’s cool!

    WHAT I’M WEARING ?
thredUP jeans, moto jacket, and pink sweater, bought w/ credit (shop similar items on thredUP) | Thrifted button up & hat, $5 | Old Payless boots, $10

    Stay A-wear!

I’m sure the information in this post isn’t anything new to you but it doesn’t hurt to have a reminder. Plus, I just really wanted to show off this outfit!

  • The Perfect Way To Style The Pantone Color of the Year

how to wear coral pantone color of the year 2019 outfit repeater hannah rupp maurices

    Cute in Coral

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ll know that Pantone named “Living Coral” the color of 2019. I am totally here for it!

This color is hot at Maurices, too, where I currently work so of course I had to pick out a piece to style! I went with this 3/4 length sleeve top from the 24/7 line. It’s a super soft shirt in the bold coral hue and the sleeve length makes it perfect to wear now and transition later into spring.

For its first wear, I paired it up with another favorite Maurices item – colored jeggings. This dusty olive green color is also new for spring and I love the way it looks with coral. A little unexpected but oh so perfect! And my scarf, originally bought in the fall, really helps tie both colors together.

I can’t wait to wear this coral shirt again with other colors! How would you style it?

3 Faux Fur Vest Outfit Ideas

    In-vestment Piece

This is a faux fur vest but these outfits are the real deal!

After dreaming of owning a faux fur vest for many years, I finally had an excuse to purchase one when the Maurices clothing store that I work at had a “vest” theme day.

I instantly fell in love and it fit seamlessly in my closet. Here’s some styling ideas in case you own one or are thinking about purchasing one. Keep scrolling to find out which outfits take the place as my favorite!

    [su_note note_color=”#FFFFFF” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”9″ class=””]

HOT TIP: My faux fur vest is currently sold out on Maurices.com. However, there are many dupes on the Poshmark app. Sign up using code “hannahrupp” for a $5 credit![/su_note]

    Work It

Here is what I wore for working my shift at Maurices. While a few of us stylists own this vest, none of us have worn it exactly the same way which I think is awesome and a testament to personal style.

I matched it up here with a pair of dark wash jeggings, booties in a similar tone, and a maroon blouse to match my lipstick. I felt very chic!

    Marooned

Sometimes all your outfit needs is a pop color. I used the trick from the outfit above and matched my lipstick to my tights, while keeping everything else neutral. I could see this outfit being great at a holiday party or for a get together with friends!

    Faux Real

This outfit is my favorite! I love the way the olive colored tunic contrasts with the light brown fur. It’s a fabulous combination! To complete the look I also added my trusty pork pie hat from ASOS, a gifted necklace, and the most buttery soft Forever 21 liquid leggings.

I searched high and low for the perfect faux leather-style leggings and these ones fit the bill. Stretchy, high rise, and sturdy. I can’t recommend them enough!

  • Why It’s Important To Take a Risk With Your Outfits

    The Rainbow Connection

It’s commonly accepted to “dress for the job you want” but what about a motto for the rest of us like “dress to be the person you want to be”? We often get so overwhelmed by fashion or caught up in overthinking our outfits for a certain occasion that we forget to have fun when we get dressed.

This rainbow t-shirt dress from ASOS kind of intimated me when I first tried it on but after awhile I felt pretty awesome in it. It reminded me of the person I strive to be everyday who loves fashion and taking risks with her outfits!

So the next time you get dressed, who are you going to be?

  • 3 Ways To Wear a Blanket Scarf This Fall

    The Blanket Scarf

Wearing a blanket scarf is as easy as 1-2-3!  I know this piece of fabric wrapped around your neck can seem intimidating but I promise it’s not as difficult as it looks and you’ll soon grow to love the warmth and functionality of a blanket scarf!

To help you out, I styled a blanket scarf 3 different ways to give you plenty of inspiration. Be sure to let me know in the comments which one is your favorite!

Every girl should be able to recreate this look in their closet. All you need is a plain top, classic denim jacket, colored jeggings (like mine from Maurices!), and booties. Wrapping a plaid blanket scarf around your neck really makes this look something special and so quintessentially fall!

This outfit is not for the faint of color! I draped the scarf over my shoulders to add a pattern to what was already a very bright ensemble. The duo formerly of What Not To Wear would likely approve of my use of “color, pattern, texture, and shine.”

    👗 WHAT I’M WEARING 💄

My favorite outfit of all three is this one with a witty graphic tee, dark brown corduroy skirt, and platform shoes. I love the throwback vibes and the scarf casually hung around my neck creates an extra layer of fun to it!

  • What You Should and Should Not Thrift

hannah rupp the outfit repeater maurices cardigan fall cute h&m jeggings thrift secondhand

What You Should and Should Not Thrift

When I’m not thrifting, I love hunting for bargains at mainstream stores. There’s often different advantages to shopping at both and I want to share a  few of them with you!

    • I look for things that fill a hole in my closet. We all get swept up in looking at pretty things at stores but I always stop to ask if an item will fulfill a purpose in my wardrobe. You really have to be honest with yourself and not just say “I need it because it’s cute!”

    • I consider price and value. It’s no secret that thrift store prices are on the rise! If I know I can find an item for a few dollars more at a retail store, then I will likely consider buying it there.

    • I always buy my basics full price. This includes camis, leggings, and socks. I view them as pieces that support almost every outfit so I’d prefer being the first owner so I can anticipate their shelf life better than if I bought one secondhand.

    • I’ll buy something if I can’t find it at a thrift store. If I see something that I’ve been searching high and low for, I will definitely purchase it without hesitation.

    • I look for unique things. While almost everything at thrift stores is one-of-a-kind, you can often find some special items first hand as well. This is especially true at small boutiques or specialty shops!

    [su_note note_color=”#FFFFFF” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”9″ class=””]

On a similar note, if I’m on a vacation or shopping far away from home and I find something I think I’ll never see again, I’ll snatch it up. [/su_note]

    How To Shop Mainstream Stores

There’s no need to feel afraid of shopping mainstream stores if you’re usually a dedicated thrifter or have fears about the effects they have on our environment. An informed shopper is a good shopper! So shop thoughtfully, be educated, be strategic. Here’s a few other quick rules to follow:

    • Shop small when possible.

    • Choose stores with good core values and beliefs that match your own.

    • Shop in places that make you feel welcome and have a friendly environment.

    • If price is a factor, pick stores that frequently run sales.

    ///

My entire look in this post is a great example of everything I just laid out for you. My booties and cardigan are recent Maurices purchases, my tee was thrifted, my necklace was a gift, and my high rise jeggings were bought on sale at H&M.

All together you get one cute fall outfit but you’d never guess how it was all sourced!

The “F” word is overrated anyways!

    Body Talk

New readers might not be aware of the changes that have taken place with my health and body over the last 10 years but it’s something very important to me. I didn’t always have the best relationship with my body, especially as a teenager, but finding the body positivity movement when I was 19 changed all that. It really helped me to accept and love my body at a size 20 and later on when I became a size 8 due to a health related weight loss.

To be honest, learning to love myself at the size I am now took much longer than it did when I was plus-size. So much so that I really stopped talking about it on my blog because I struggled with my new image for a few years.

Thankfully with lots of practice and supportive friends & internet strangers, I’ve gotten through that rough patch and I feel like I’m in a better place now to encourage and remind others to love themselves no matter what size or shape they are. <3

In celebration of that, I put together this outfit and wanted to talk more about why I don’t say the “F” word (flattering) on my blog. Keep scrolling for my thoughts or just to shop similar pieces from my outfit!

    The “F” Word

Maybe it’s my laid back personality or my creative mind but I’ve never understood the “f” word – flattering. Why is trying to live up to some imaginary rules that someone deemed as “correct” such a big deal?! It’s so weird when you think about how we’re the only mammals that wear clothes yet there’s rules for how we’re supposed to do it.

The way I see it, trying to fit in and dress flattering will only stunt your creativity and is a slippery slope towards becoming a people pleaser. This is precisely why I never preach about body shapes or “flattering” silhouettes on my blog. Clothes are clothes and I believe they should be fun!

What I’m Wearing & What I’ll Never Wear

I’ve worn just about everything on my blog! From body con to over-sized and everything in between. Having been on both sides of the size spectrum, the only “rule” I’ve found worth following is that when you love what you wear, you feel good and that’s what makes you look good to others.

I felt pretty awesome in the outfit worn for this post! These are my new holy grail high waisted jeans from H&M, a recently thrifted crop top, and my long standing favorite leopard print coat.

The pants hug my curves, the coat has no shape, and the crop top exposes my belly. But you know what? I wore it and the world didn’t end.

    You Are Some Body

I hope that my blog, my outfits, and my story of body positivity encourage you to feel comfortable in your own skin.

If you’re so willing, I would love for you to leave a comment and tell me one thing you love about your body. Finding just one thing each day is a small step towards complete acceptance and I’d be excited to cheer you on as you work your way to that place!

Roses are red, violets are blue, here’s a trendy outfit post just for you!

    Color Me Bad

Color has been a big part of my closet for the past couple of years so it should come as no surprise that I’m excited about ultra-violet being chosen as the Pantone Color of the Year! Purple feels like such a powerful color so I think it sets a good tone for 2018.

I was able to jump on this trend thanks to a recent DIY I did in collaboration with Rit Dye. So here’s how I styled my new-to-me top as well as a few tips for other ways to work it into your outfits!

    Purple With Purpose

I don’t normally highlight trendy things around here but this shirt is definitely different because, as I mentioned, it was a total labor of love that I sourced secondhand and colored myself.

Why spend lots of money on something you may never wear again? Though, I think this top is going to get lots of wear. I mean, come on, it’s ultra-violet which makes it ultra cool!

    What I’m Wearing

This ultra-violet top matched so much in my closet that I had a tough time narrowing it down. My mom actually stepped in to give her opinion so I have to give her credit for most of this look!

She picked out this splashy vintage skirt, a punk-y moto jacket, black tights, and sleek black booties.

My contribution to the look is the hat and purple lipstick. They’re the perfect nod to the ’80s that I love to incorporate into my looks!

    Spring Forward

The other ideas I had for ultra-violet were pairing it with other shades of purple for a monochromatic look, yellow to really contrast the colors, and red because it’s Valentine’s season. Now you see why I had to call in for help to wrangle my ideas in!

Overall, I’m really digging this edgy spring look that my mom helped me come up with. Maybe my mom should become a regular contributor to my blog after she styled the outfit in this post and this outfit a couple years ago. Let me know in the comments what you think!
