If you had told me five years ago that I could wear a turtleneck for summer, I would have thought you were crazy. Though, to be fair, I would still think you were crazy even if you told me that a month ago.
Trends are always changing thanks to designers, celebrities, bloggers, and even the cool people on your campus. I am not exempt from these fleeting fashions. I just usually avoid them because shelling out big bucks for something is not in my nature.
But thanks to trends constantly rotating and my love for thrift stores, I’ve found a way to work around my budget problem and still try out trends that I think are interesting.
I was inspired by an old image of Miley Cyrus (yes thee Miley Cyrus) wearing a black cropped mock turtleneck, silver skirt, and a killer Moschino belt. The most captivating part of her outfit was her crop top. I had never seen a mock turtleneck look so chic!
It would have been simple to run out to any fast fashion store and buy the exact piece but where’s the creativity in that?
I patiently searched through thrift stores for a year until I found the perfect top. It was a black mock turtleneck in a frumpy shape but I saw potential in it and took it home with me.. for free. (Thank you, thrift gods!)
I modified the fit to be tighter by literally doing the laziest sewing of my life. I just put a straight stitch up both sides of the top and it instantly became molded to my body.
To put my own spin on Miley’s original look I wore my favorite black and white striped skirt, a necklace to emulate her shiny pieces, and some flats to make it everyday appropriate.
If you’re like me and you think you’re not a trend person because of this or that, think again. Always try something once, work within your budget and make a style your own.

Hi Hannah,
I found you through IFB, and I really appreciate your sensible approach to fashion. I actually love the fashion bloggers who do tend to wear their favorite clothing items again and again. (I do this myself and I’m not ashamed!) I feel like that shows a positive relationship with material things and puts the focus on finding items that you truly love rather than just wearing something once for a blog post. Looking forward to reading more!
Love, Mary

By the way, the pixie hair is adorable!
Love this!! And your turtleneck turned out fabulously well! It’s been a little while since I’ve gone thrifting, but I have my fingers crossed for a little coffee & thrift date next week!! Anywho, lovely to meet ya + stumble upon your blog!! xo
I love how this outfit came together! And I love how you put so much thought into it, and found inspiration for it. I need to start doing that with more of my outfits. I feel like lately I just throw on whatever is easiest in my closet… how boring! You’ve inspired me. 🙂
That’s so cool how you really had a vision for this outfit and went through with it! I tend to lack planning with mine, and sort of just throw on whatever. I’ve never thought of turtlenecks in the summer, but it’s an interesting idea! Sort of in the realm of knit tanks.
