This is how I’m using thrift stores to increase my style in 2018!
New Year, New Me
I promised in my last thrift haul video of the year that I would forgo my usual thrifting wishlist for the month (just this one time!) and instead highlight where I’m hoping to take my style in 2018 with the help of thrift stores. I will always choose thrifting over retail as it gives me a chance to be more creative and try new trends that I might not have before.
Better yet, my friend Nicole of Write Like a Girl picks a word of the year to help her focus on what she wants both in her life and in her closet. I want to do that too!
So last year I was all about color and I’d love to continue that but elevate it slightly. My word this year would be “lively.” I feel invigorated again after a less-than-stellar year and I want my clothes to reflect how I feel on the inside.
Let’s check out what that will look like!
Make a Statement
I’ve built a great wardrobe full of basics and think I know my style well enough to take more risks every now and then. Statement pieces like cool jackets, colorful jeans, and patterned dresses are just the thing I’m looking to incorporate.
Putting On The Glitz
The last few years I’ve been caught in a jam when I needed something fancy to wear to weddings. I want to remedy this by stockpiling dressier pieces in my closet for when I could really use them.
Out of Season
Going along with the previous goal, I want to thrift more out of season. For the most part I thrift whatever my heart desires (and is on my thrifting wishlist) but I always strive to plan ahead and be better prepared in my life.. starting with my clothes!
Flair Forever
I think I’ve been saying for more than 5 years that I want to learn how to properly accent my outfits using jewelry and accessories. While I’ve accumulated quite a bit and have made small steps toward getting there, I think it’s time I try to thrift pieces that I’ll actually wear and then, you know, wear them!
How To Thrift Your Own Perfect Wardrobe This Year
You might be wondering how to make your own style goals and where to to even start! I’ve outlined a few tips to help guide you in the right direction.
Make a Fashion Moodboard
As a visual person, using a style notebook full out outfit inspiration has really changed my life. You can learn more about creating and using a fashion moodboard in this post.
Make a Thrifting Wishlist
You can choose to craft a tangible mood board, use Pinterest to make a thrifting wishlist, or both like me! This is great for keeping you on track when you feel overwhelmed at a thrift store. Just check out your list and let it direct you!
Go Thrifting!
Take a walk around your favorite thrift store and look at what they sell and imagine how you might be able to incorporate it into your style. If you can’t stop thinking of a certain item and can envision it being worn at least 3 ways with your current closet, consider buying it! The thrift gods work in mysterious ways and presenting you with something you never knew you needed is one of them!
