A Thrifted Gift From Assistance League Online Thrift Shop

Out with the old and in with the… old? My Spring closet refresh is off to a thrifty start!

I got a surprise package from the Assistance League of Georgetown Area. One of their employees is also a blog follower and they saw my recent collaboration with Assistance League Online Thrift Shop and wanted to send along a birthday gift! I was very flattered by the gesture!

There are actually two items in the package but I just styled the first one for this post. It’s an amazing multi-patterned blouse with statement sleeves from the brand Umgee. I saw it online and was captivated by the floral print. I feel lucky that it’s mine now!

Hannah is white female standing in front of a pink background. Her curly hair is pulled into a bun. She's wearing a floral blouse, brown faux fur vest, light wash flared jeans, and tan booties. How I Styled a Statement Blouse and Flared Denim

This statement-making floral blouse feels very romantic and bohemian. I knew right away that I wanted to wear it with flared jeans but I didn’t have any in my closet.

As chance would have it, the clothing store I work at, Maurices, carries a line of denim called Kancan. Kancan is known for some fashion-forward (and very comfy!) jeans. I’ve never owned a pair before but an opportunity recently came up for associates to get a pair at a deep discount. How could I say no?!

As soon as I saw the Kancan Super Flare High Rise jeans online, I knew they were the ones. I had already done a big try-on in-store of our available Kancans to figure out my size. So I was fortunate to order my perfect size on the first try!

These jeans + this blouse makes me feel like the flower child I never knew I was!

    How My Kancan Jeans Fit

As I mentioned above, I tried on a bunch of Kancan jeans at Maurices to figure out my true size. I ended up getting a size 28, which corresponds to a womens size 8. There is a lot of stretch so they’re very comfortable, too.

If you’re not familiar with the brand, I highly recommend you do the same to figure out your fit. Maurices carries Kancan in sizes 23-33 and for plus sizes 14w-24w. Additionally, you can always order different inseams online, which is SO helpful.

Tips For Styling Those Hard-To-Wear Items In Your Closet

Styling hard-to-wear items in your closet can be tricky. However, with a few simple tricks, you can make them look fabulous! Here are some tips to help you get started:

    • Accessorize: Adding the right accessories can make a huge difference in how an outfit looks. Try adding a statement necklace, a sparkly belt, or a colorful scarf to add interest.
    • Layer: Layering is a great way to make a plain outfit look more interesting. Try adding a cardigan, vest, or jacket to add a bit of texture and dimension.
    • Mix and match: Don’t be afraid to mix different prints and textures. For example, combine a floral skirt with a striped top, or pair a colorful sequined top with a neutral bottom.
    • Embrace color: Don’t be afraid to experiment with bright and bold colors. A bright red blazer or a royal blue dress can really make a statement.
    • Try different silhouettes: Try different shapes and sizes of clothing. A-line skirts, off-the-shoulder tops, and wrap dresses can be very flattering.

Let’s take a look at these tips in action!

    Styling A Vintage-Inspired Cardigan

I thrifted this blue vintage-inspired cardigan because it looks similar to one that Molly Ringwald wears in the movie Pretty In Pink.

Unfortunately, my life isn’t quite the same as that character and I’ve struggled to incorporate it into my wardrobe.

I decided to embrace the throwback vibes and did a nod to ’50s style. I’m more of an ’80s girl but I thought it was a beautiful look, nonetheless.

    Styling A Denim Kimono

This kimono was thrifted on a whim because I thought “when else am I going to see a denim kimono?!”. I now know they’re not popular because they’re kind of difficult to style—or at least this one is. I think the biggest downfall is the length. It hits at an awkward place on my body and would be better if it was longer.

But in the spirit of the challenge, I found a way to make it work as-is! I did some digging on Pinterest and found a lot of cool double denim outfits so I gave that a try and really liked the outcome!

    Styling A Sweater Vest

I’m sure I’m not the only fashion fiend who saw Harry Styles wear a sweater vest and immediately needed to add one to their life. While this isn’t a particularly difficult piece to style (no pun intended) I had a little trouble incorporating it into the silhouettes I normally wear.

The easy solution was to try something completely new and I LOVE it! This is totally going to be my Valentine’s Day look this year.

I think this outfit perfectly incorporates all of my tips about shape, color, layering, accessorizing, and trying new things.

    What’s In YOUR Closet?

With these tips in mind, you can make the most out of those hard-to-wear items in your closet and create stylish and unique outfits! Let me know what you think of this topic and what piece in YOUR closet needs some help styling. I’d be happy to help out in the comments!

  • What I Wore To Work This Week | Simple But Stylish

maurices stylist outfits workwear midwest spring trends hannah rupp

Working at Maurices has really trained my styling eye. We have an unofficial motto at Maurices that says you should only wear an outfit you’d be proud to share on social media so I’m taking that to heart by sharing my outfits that I’ve worn for my shifts this week!

While I’m not always able to document every single look, I’m going to try to share as many as I can. Hopefully this will inspire you if you also work in a creative environment.

    [su_note note_color=”#ffffff”]

Exact & similar pieces to purchase will always be linked below the outfits![/su_note]

    A Peace Of My Mind

maurices stylist outfits workwear midwest spring trends hannah rupp

My Earth Week started off with this hippie-inspired look. (Do you see a theme forming?)

There are a lot of aspects about working in a fast fashion store that conflict with my thrifty roots and go against a sustainable lifestyle. But there’s also a happy medium!

A big part of my job is assisting customers in selecting clothes and styling outfits for them. Many express to me how they want pieces they can wear over and over again in different ways and that makes my Outfit Repeater heart happy!

Another small thing that I didn’t learn until I started working at Maurices is that our EVERflex™ jeans are actually really green! The fabric used for EVERflex™ is sustainable and helps the environment by being made with 0% gas emission and the fibers are made from 100% recycled material.

But most customers don’t know that because they just love how great EVERflex™ jeans look and feel!

    Go With The Flow

I had a short work week so I didn’t take time to plan my outfits. This was thrown together with less than an hour before my shift began!

It goes back to what I was saying in the previous paragraph – having remixable pieces in your closet can make a world of difference when getting dressed. You can just throw them on and look stylish without much effort!

3 Faux Fur Vest Outfit Ideas

    In-vestment Piece

This is a faux fur vest but these outfits are the real deal!

After dreaming of owning a faux fur vest for many years, I finally had an excuse to purchase one when the Maurices clothing store that I work at had a “vest” theme day.

I instantly fell in love and it fit seamlessly in my closet. Here’s some styling ideas in case you own one or are thinking about purchasing one. Keep scrolling to find out which outfits take the place as my favorite!

    [su_note note_color=”#FFFFFF” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”9″ class=””]

HOT TIP: My faux fur vest is currently sold out on Maurices.com. However, there are many dupes on the Poshmark app. Sign up using code “hannahrupp” for a $5 credit![/su_note]

    Work It

Here is what I wore for working my shift at Maurices. While a few of us stylists own this vest, none of us have worn it exactly the same way which I think is awesome and a testament to personal style.

I matched it up here with a pair of dark wash jeggings, booties in a similar tone, and a maroon blouse to match my lipstick. I felt very chic!

    Marooned

Sometimes all your outfit needs is a pop color. I used the trick from the outfit above and matched my lipstick to my tights, while keeping everything else neutral. I could see this outfit being great at a holiday party or for a get together with friends!

    Faux Real

This outfit is my favorite! I love the way the olive colored tunic contrasts with the light brown fur. It’s a fabulous combination! To complete the look I also added my trusty pork pie hat from ASOS, a gifted necklace, and the most buttery soft Forever 21 liquid leggings.

I searched high and low for the perfect faux leather-style leggings and these ones fit the bill. Stretchy, high rise, and sturdy. I can’t recommend them enough!

  • That ’70s Outfit

Fall is back and so are the 1970s! I’m still hopelessly devoted to the ’80s but I can give that up for one 1970s themed outfit post.

1970s Inspired Outfit: Floral blouse, white lace vest, high waisted dark wash denim, high heels, mini brown backpack

I don’t normally succumb to trends but this one was stupidly simple to thrift so I decided to go for it. If you don’t already, I would highly recommend thrifting for vintage trends like this one. It’s easier on your wallet in case you hate it, plus you can get something authentic from the decade!

My entire outfit was built around this sweet floral top. It’s one of those pieces that’s a really awkward length so I called it a shirt and tucked it into jeans.. but not just any jeans.

These high waisted beauties were a diamond in the rough at the thrift store. Even the cashier was impressed with my skills. Hey, I wasn’t kidding when I said I am a thrift store legend.

After I added this slouchy hat, boho vest, and backpack, I couldn’t help but feel like a student back in the day who might have gone to school with my mom. High heels aren’t practical for walking around a campus but we can’t have it all, right?

  • Casual Autumn Outfit Styled By Our Wood Home

Do you ever buy something for your closet, get super excited, and then become really unsure of how to wear it?

That’s what happened to me and these red t-strap flats. They’re as cute as can be but I’ve only mustered up wearing them once for the Fourth of July.

    striped-dress-casual-autumn-outfit-04

Thankfully, Christina of Our Wood Home stepped in with her unique eye for style and came up with a great casual autumn outfit revolving around these fabulous shoes.

    In her own words…

When I was choosing an outfit for Hannah I went with the classic black and white with red combo because it is…well, classic!  This dress jumped out at me because it looks cool enough to wear in September without the risk of getting too hot if the weather decides to be unseasonably warm.  The dress and shoes look great on their own but seem to simple for Hannah’s fun style, which is why I topped it with the lacey vest.

    striped-dress-casual-autumn-outfit-001

I couldn’t agree with her more! This black and white striped dress (yep, more stripes!) is a staple in my wardrobe, as it should be in yours. Christina geniusly paired it with these flats because you can’t go wrong pairing red & stripes together because really, they are made for one another.

She also added some extra interest to this outfit with the addition of the white lace vest I previously thrifted. Funny enough, that’s another one of those items in my closet that stumps me on how to style it. For shame, I know.

The red lipstick was my own idea. Hey, can you blame me when it looks so cool with purple hair?

    striped-dress-casual-autumn-outfit-05striped-dress-casual-autumn-outfit-03

A big thanks to Christina for styling this look for me! Be sure to go over to her blog to see how I dressed her in the some of the sunniest hues ever to reflect a beautiful orange statement necklace she picked out. You’re going to want to recreate it ASAP.

When Christina is not blogging, she can also be found on Pinterest, Facebook, and working on projects around her home. She is certainly a creative powerhouse!

I’m always excited to have somebody else come up with an outfit for me. See what Ruta and Hannah have done for me in the past. Want to be next? Pop me an e-mail!
