  • Here’s How To Look Stylish This Fall Without Wearing a Sweater

    Quintessential Fall Fashion

Wearing another dress for fall? Groundbreaking.

This time, instead of an unseasonal maxi dress, I am wearing a floral long-sleeve number.

Our weather finally cooled off, and I got to have a quintessential fall day in the perfect autumn outfit.

For anyone still thinking inside the box that fall fashion is only about sweater weather, let me use this outfit to change your mind!

Continue reading to get my tips on how to style yourself this season without relying on a sweater. (Although sweaters for fall are great too!)

Why I Bought a Dress For Fall

Fall is a fun time to experiment in your closet, play with your layers, and try something new.

If you’re stuck in a jeans and sweater rut to chase away the chills, this outfit should inspire you to branch out and try something new!

Hannah is a white female with short brown hair. She's standing outside near a tree, smiling, wearing a blue floral dress, brown tights, brown knee high boots, and a teal beret.

My long-sleeve floral dress with a mock turtleneck has been on my thrifting wishlist for seven years! I first spotted it on ThredUp and wanted it for an event but knew it wouldn’t arrive in time.

Even though the event came and went, I never stopped thinking about this dress (or adding it to my ThredUp wishlist)!

Finally, this year, I decided to just buy the dress and live out all my fall fashion fantasies with it.

Bringing To Life My Fall Fashion Fantasy

So, what is my fall fashion fantasy? Colors that reflect the changing leaves, pieces that invoke nostalgia, like tights and boots, plus cozy elements like a thrifted beret.

This outfit checked all the boxes for me. Plus, I wore it on a beautiful fall day to walk around and support local artists in my hometown. It could not have felt more perfect!

Fall Outfits That Don’t Involve a Sweater

If you’re like me and want to try something new this fall without relying on a sweater, here are a few outfit combinations I would suggest:

    • Destructed denim and a utilitarian jacket
    • A short skirt, turtleneck, and tights… à la The Nanny!
    • A cute long-sleeve shirt and overalls
    • A flouncy blouse and non-denim pants (think palazzo pants!)
    • A dress and a chunky cardigan
    • A midi skirt, button-down, and sweater vest
    • Colored denim, a sweatshirt, and a classic camel coat

Are you feeling inspired yet? I’d love to see your fall outfits. Tag me on social media so I can check them out!

    An Underrated Winter Essential?

Weren’t you complaining all Summer how hot it was and you couldn’t wait until Winter to layer your clothes?!

    Well, now we’re here!

So just because it’s Winter doesn’t mean you should stop trying out trends or putting an effort into your daily fits.

A new style I’ve tried out in the past few months is second-skin tops. Weird name, right?

It just refers to a top that’s form-fitting in nature and literally feels like you aren’t wearing a shirt at all.

Here’s why I think now is the best time to be wearing them, as well as 2 outfit ideas you can steal for yourself!

    Layers & (No) Chill

Hearing that a top is thin enough to feel like nothing at all probably doesn’t seem too appealing in the cold weather, but let me change your mind!

Winter is the time for layering so what better to layer with than a second-skin top that won’t add any bulk to your outfit AND is stylish?!

If you run hot, you might even benefit from some extra warmth with the mesh fabric as a base for your outfit.

For this outfit, I layered a nude cami under the second-skin top then added tights, a denim skirt, a red beret, and combat boots. If I was leaving the house, I’d grab a heavy coat and be good to go!

Level Up Your Layering With Second-Skin Tops

For my next look, I actually wore this during one of those freak “warm” Winter days that was about 30°. (IYKYK)

The cold never bothered me as I dashed between my car to the store and back again, plus I looked cute doing it in this second-skin top, utility pants, long pink coat, and sparkly sneakers.

Suffice to say, if you’re going out or staying in, this is a solid choice to wear in the Winter!

  • Here’s How To Wear a Summer Dress in the Winter (Without Freezing Your Butt Off!)

How To Stay Stylish AND Stay Warm

Don’t you hate it when the cold weather creeps in and you have to shun half of your wardrobe?

Whether you banish it to the back of your closet or hide it away in tubs, it can really feel like a part of you is missing all winter.

Thankfully, there are a lot of style hacks to wear your warm-weather clothes when the temperatures drop too low.

So don’t say goodbye to your summer clothes just yet—I’m going to explore one option in this post using a colorful sleeveless dress as an example!

    Let’s dive in!

    Winter Wardrobe Woes

First off, what do you define as summer clothes? Is it a silhouette, a print, or maybe even a color?

Some clothing elements are easier to transition into winter than others. I think all colors should be for year-round wear, but I will admit it can be tricky

At a basic level, all colors should be fair play year-round.

It can be tricky wearing certain patterns like gingham and floral, which usually have an attachment with spring and summer.

But the big boss to beat is slinky cuts and mini-styles. While not impossible (as I’m about the show you) it does take a lot of creativity to pull off.

hannah is wearing an orange patterned dress, an orange cardigan, skin tone colored tights, and silver mary jane flats.hannah is wearing an orange patterned dress, an orange cardigan, skin tone colored tights, and silver mary jane flats.

    What’s My Season?!

My outfit has a couple of summer characteristics like the bright orange hue, the bold pattern, and the fact that the dress is sleeveless!

Believe it or not, I thrifted this dress and cardigan within weeks of each other last fall. I thought I’d have to wait until later in the season to wear either of them when I realized they would look incredible put together – plus adding the cozy cardigan helped to winterize my dress.

To continue adding warmth to my outfit, I also wore a pair of tights. If I wasn’t wearing an orange cardigan, I’d probably wear some crazy colored tights. But I went with skin tone to keep the outfit from being overwhelming.

I’m not sure if you’d say my accessories are subtle as I’m wearing a DIY Barbie shoe necklace and silver Mary Janes. But I thought they were just the right details to brighten up a dreary winter day!

More Cool Style Tips For Staying Warm

When it comes to layering your summer clothes for winter, the sky is the limit. A few more ideas might be –

    • Try a turtleneck underneath a sleeveless dress
    • Wear leggings instead of tights
    • Try tall boots with your summer dresses
    • Accessorize with a chunky scarf

What is your favorite styling hack for wearing summer clothes in the winter? Let me know in the comments!

  • The Truth About My Thrifting Journey

the truth about my thrifting journeyThe Truth About My Thrifting Journey

A comment I hear most from my online audience is how in awe they are of what I thrift, how I thrift, where I thrift, or my colorful thrifted outfits in general.

I don’t claim to have any magical powers when it comes to thrifting (though the thrift gods do bless me on occasion).

I’m just a regular gal on a budget living in the Midwest who uses thrifting as a creative outlet and to help reduce my environmental footprint.

So what makes my thrift finds so different or my outfits so unique?

To answer that question, I had to do some digging into my shopping habits and peek into my closet for some insight.

So what’s the truth about my thrifting journey? Read on to find out!

My Thrifting Journey: In My Cart

I shop at a variety of stores every month from the recognizable chains down to volunteer-run shops that are off the beaten path.

I used to favor one over the other but have come to appreciate the offerings of both.

My outfit in this post is a mix of Goodwill finds and no-name stores.

The only big rule I follow is that if it’s too expensive, I don’t buy it. Simple as that. Life’s too short to complain about thrift store prices or speculate why they’re on the rise. ٭eye roll٭ Plus, I’ve been thrifting long enough to know that if I can’t afford something right now, it will come back around at another time.

Which brings me to my first big piece of advice – BE PATIENT!

Thrifting the perfect wardrobe doesn’t happen overnight. It takes years to find the clothes that speak to you, your body, and your budget. Be patient and keep searching. One store is not going to have it all, and you shouldn’t expect it to.

hannah has curly hair worn under a black pork pie hat. she's smiling while wearing an x-files graphic tee, purple cardigan, colorful skirt, black tights, and black ballet flats

My Thrifting Journey: In My Closet

Since my closet wasn’t thrifted overnight (nor is it finished now!), sometimes that means my outfits are lacking certain pieces to finish them.

It can be frustrating but I remain patient. That was a trait I picked up many years ago when, in 2012, I went through an extreme health-related weight loss and had to give up 95% of my wardrobe in under a year. I was left with the bare bones of a closet and had to start over.

I was always a savvy thrifter and saw potential in everything I bought, but that became even more important than ever.

I cannot stress enough that you need to see potential in everything. If you disregard everything as being too frumpy, old, outdated, or small; you’ll wind up with nothing. (And likely write off a lot of thrift stores without giving them a fair chance!)

Everything can be refashioned into something new or styled to look different. My social media feed is full of Gen Z thrifters buying clothes I’d only imagine my grandma wearing but they have a way of modifying the pieces to look trendy. They’re definitely on to something!

    In Clothes-ing

So how long did this outfit take to thrift?

    • The skirt was bought in 2013
    • The graphic tee was thrifted in 2017
    • I found the cardigan last year, in 2023

Isn’t that wild to think it took me 11 years to wear this outfit?!

I hope this post encourages you to be patient and see potential in every thrift store and item you pick up. The result is SO worth it to your closet and the planet!

3 Ways to Style a Denim Overall Dress (Without Looking Childish!) How To Style a Denim Overall Dress

Who doesn’t love a denim overall dress?!

A denim jumper is both timeless, easy to wear, but also harkens back to a simpler time in our lives; thus making us feel very child-ish when we wear them.

It’s definitely tricky finding a balance of styling clothes usually associated with children while making them feel grown-up for you now and also representing your personal style.

Today I’m tackling the problem with denim overall dresses and hopefully sparking some new outfit ideas for you!

Outfit Idea: A Denim Dress with Color

My personal style is very colorful so naturally I want to style a staple like a denim dress with color!

The blue denim can really be an anchor for any color palette you choose. I went with reds and orange since my mind is in Fall mode!

I think the red is also a more mature version of pink that we might see and associate with a little girls outfit. Red is a bold choice, marking how far you’ve come since you were younger!

hannah is standing in front of a pink background, smiling, wearing a denim dress with a red puff sleeve blouse, red tights, and black flats. hannah is standing in front of a pink background, smiling, wearing a denim dress and a red puff sleeve blouse. she has a long silver necklace with a red apple on it.

Outfit Idea: A Denim Dress and Embracing Youthful Elements

If you’re already going to feel like a child in a denim dress, why not embrace it?

I went with another colorful palette but the pieces themselves have grown-up silhouettes. Like a pea coat, beret, and boat neck top.

hannah is standing in front of a pink background, smiling, wearing a denim dress, yellow pea coat, yellow beret, and cobalt blue flats. hannah is standing in front of a pink background, smiling, wearing a denim dress, yellow beret, yellow pea coat, and a striped boat neck top.

Outfit Idea: A Denim Dress and Moto Jacket

Lastly, get as far as you can from a goody-two-shoes image by decking yourself out in dark colors and an edgy moto jacket!

I added a fun patterned scarf for some flair, but a structured hat or statement accessories would also be a good addition to this look!

hannah is standing in front of a pink background, smiling, wearing a denim dress with a black moto jacket, black tights, black boots, and a star print vintage scarf around her neck. hannah is standing in front of a pink background, smiling, wearing a denim dress, a denim moto jacket, and a star print vintage scarf around her neck. she has her hand in her naturally wavy hair.

    Jean (Dress) Queen

A denim dress can be so much fun to style and wear. If you’re still feeling self-conscious, try to think about where those thoughts are coming from and why they bother you so much. There’s nothing wrong with wearing what you like and expressing yourself!

At the end of the day, there’s no harm in wearing something youthful or wearing your hair in pigtails. The world will keep spinning and you will have rocked a look that was true to yourself!

  • A DIY Jack-o’-Lantern Halloween Costume

    A DIY Jack-o'-Lantern Halloween Costume www.theoutfitrepeater.comDIY Jack-O’-Lantern Halloween Costume

I take being the cutest pumpkin in the patch quite literally!

Based on that, I decided to make my own jack-o’-lantern costume from materials I had lying around.

It was very easy and would be a great last-minute costume or even an outfit to wear to a pumpkin patch.

Best of all? You don’t have to have any real pumpkin carving skills!

Just grab something orange from your closet, and some scissors, and you’re ready to go!

What You Need For a Jack-o’-Lantern Costume

The base of my jack-o’-lantern costume is an orange sweater dress (or maybe a sweater? It’s quite long!) that I thrifted.

Because you’ll be modifying your clothing item, I recommend choosing something you don’t have a lot of attachment to, like a thrifted shirt or dress in any shade of orange!

And finally, to make your jack-o’-lantern Halloween costume, you’ll need either sticky-back black paper or felt. I found mine at the Dollar Tree!

an orange sweater, thrifted beret, and tights are transformed into a DIY jack-o'-lantern halloween costume an orange sweater, thrifted beret, and tights are transformed into a DIY jack-o'-lantern halloween costume

How To Put Together Your Own Jack-o’-Lantern Costume

I freehanded a jack-o’-lantern design on my black sticky-back paper, cut it out, and then placed it on my sweater.

You could go one step further and buy iron-on paper and attach your jack-o’-lantern face more permanently to your garment. But I do plan to re-wear this sweater in the future so I just needed a temporary solution!

an orange sweater, thrifted beret, and tights are transformed into a DIY jack-o'-lantern halloween costume

To complete the look, I think it’s best to wear orange pants to really convey the idea that you’re a human-sized pumpkin! Or you could wear tights if you chose a dress.

Finally, top it off with a black beret (mine is thrifted!) to emulate the stem on top of a pumpkin! A brown beret would work great, too!

an orange sweater, thrifted beret, and tights are transformed into a DIY jack-o'-lantern halloween costume

    Halloween Costume Takeaways

This jack-o’-lantern costume is easy to make and is also a great way to get into the Halloween spirit without breaking the bank! It’s a classic costume that everyone will recognize.

You could make a bunch of different variations and wear them all together as a family or group “pumpkin patch” costume.

So why not give it a try and see how creative you can get? Be sure to bookmark or Pin this post so you can re-create it later!

I got dressed to SLEIGH at Drag Queen Bingo this month. There were so many sequins in one room!

This was my third time attending Drag Queen Bingo at Kelch’s Aviation Museum in Brodhead, Wisconsin and it did not disappoint. Even without a single win (after all this time!) it’s still so much fun to get dressed up, eat snacks, and support the incredibly hardworking performers.

Speaking of dressing up… here’s what I wore for such an ex-drag-vagant event!

What I Wore To Drag Queen Bingo

The loose theme for Bingo this month was “holiday” and I knew exactly what outfit would match the occasion.

I pulled out this rainbow sequin striped sweater that I thrifted many years ago. It still makes me smile when I see it just like the first time I saw it hanging in the aisles of a thrift store.

I always wonder about what adventures the original owner had in this sweater and hope I’m living up to the fabulousness that it exudes!

This is a faux fur vest but these outfits are the real deal!

After dreaming of owning a faux fur vest for many years, I finally had an excuse to purchase one when the Maurices clothing store that I work at had a “vest” theme day.

I instantly fell in love and it fit seamlessly in my closet. Here’s some styling ideas in case you own one or are thinking about purchasing one. Keep scrolling to find out which outfits take the place as my favorite!

    Work It

Here is what I wore for working my shift at Maurices. While a few of us stylists own this vest, none of us have worn it exactly the same way which I think is awesome and a testament to personal style.

I matched it up here with a pair of dark wash jeggings, booties in a similar tone, and a maroon blouse to match my lipstick. I felt very chic!

This outfit is my favorite! I love the way the olive colored tunic contrasts with the light brown fur. It’s a fabulous combination! To complete the look I also added my trusty pork pie hat from ASOS, a gifted necklace, and the most buttery soft Forever 21 liquid leggings.

I searched high and low for the perfect faux leather-style leggings and these ones fit the bill. Stretchy, high rise, and sturdy. I can’t recommend them enough!

    The Rainbow Connection

It’s commonly accepted to “dress for the job you want” but what about a motto for the rest of us like “dress to be the person you want to be”? We often get so overwhelmed by fashion or caught up in overthinking our outfits for a certain occasion that we forget to have fun when we get dressed.

This rainbow t-shirt dress from ASOS kind of intimated me when I first tried it on but after awhile I felt pretty awesome in it. It reminded me of the person I strive to be everyday who loves fashion and taking risks with her outfits!
