Every fashionista wants to dress cool but not break the bank, especially at Christmas when you want to save money and spend it on the special people on your gift list! Here’s how I sleigh my holiday outfits and navigate multiple gatherings as an outfit repeater!

    Christmas Time Again

The holidays are truly our time to shine. There are so many fun occasions to dress up for that you might get swept up in the idea that you have to buy something new to wear to all of them.

Not only is this silly because most people won’t notice that you re-wore your favorite red pants (you’d actually probably get a ton of compliments), but it can also get costly!

    One Outfit, Multiple Parties

I only buy new clothes for events every once in a while. After years of being an outfit repeater, my first instinct is to always shop my own closet after I get a party invite. (And let’s be honest, those aren’t flooding my inbox!)

But if I was the type of person who had a big social life, I could see this outfit fitting in at a friend gathering, a festive Zoom Christmas party, or watching a lights display from the warmth of my vehicle.

Plus each piece can be mixed and matched on its own. I just wore this green turtleneck for Thanksgiving last month and I plan to wear the heck of these red pants for Valentine’s Day!

    Treat Your’elf

Because my entire outfit was sourced secondhand for a steal; that means I have enough money left over to buy some awesome (and thrifty) gifts for my family & friends this year.

Buying online from thredUP also meant I got exactly what I wanted without having to compromise my personal style this holiday season. I just typed in what I wanted in the search bar, like “white moto jacket”, and found several options!

I love that thrifting is a fun and affordable way to treat yourself and others!

What kind of secondhand gifts did you buy for others this year? My go-to is always books and games! (ignore that if you’re someone in my family lol)

    Cat-titude

Taylor Swift is personally responsible for my growing collection of feline fashion so I couldn’t say no to this purrfect tee when Fifth Sun reached out for a collaboration! I styled it ala the cat lady herself with vintage touches like a polka dot skirt and red lipstick.

The tee is nearly as soft as a cat, without pesky claws to do any damage and the fit is spot on (I’m wearing a womens small, for reference). Best of all it arrived exactly as it was pictured on the website.. if not cuter in person. 😻

I recently featured another Fifth Sun t-shirt in a post about MTV and you can definitely expect more from them in the future! They have the coolest selection of graphic tees for any pop culture buff or fandom you belong to. I’ve got my eye on some Ferris Bueller merch next! What catches your eye on the Fifth Sun website?

    I want my M-Tee-V!

    Material Girl

Fashion & music have long been besties but I think the launch of MTV in 1981 really solidified their relationship. It suddenly brought the two elements into our living room and exposed us to a whole new side of entertainment.

That relationship of fashion & music is still relevant today but our source has shifted from television to social media, making our favorite artists just a click away. Keep reading to learn how they’ve inspired my outfit!

    Star Struck

I consider myself a pop culture connoisseur, not only of the ’80s but also of modern times. Celebs definitely influence my style!

10 years ago I saw Rihanna wearing a pair of gold bamboo earrings and I shortly lucked out finding some knock-offs from Walmart – the very ones in this outfit post! The style is so popular that they continue to be imitated year after year, like these ones from Forever 21.

You might also notice I’m wearing a tiny bat ring. It’s a humorous nod to the infamous Ozzy Osbourne incident where he allegedly bit the head off a bat. Though I bought it for more personal reasons, I thought it fit in perfect with this music-inspired look.

    Graphic Jam

The rest of my outfit pays tribute to merch acquired from concerts like my (tragically modern) MTV t-shirt.

There’s only so many times you can wear a band shirt with jeans before it gets old, right? So I chose to dress up my graphic t-shirt by wearing it over a matching leopard print maxi dress and tying a small knot at my natural waist for a little flair.

    Talk about versatili-tee! 😉

    I’m With The Band

Do you ever copy outfits from bands or artists? What was the most memorable look you recreated? I’d love to hear about it down in the comments!

  • Celebrating The End of Summer in Colorful Stripes

    Sweet Truth

I’m always a sucker for a hit of nostalgia which is why I thrifted this colorful sprinkled dress last month. It reminded me of vintage dishware but for the purpose of this post, I dressed to resemble Fruit Stripe gum of yesteryear! Who else remembers that stuff?!

Scroll down to read how I modernized this retro find!

    Heart Eyes

This 1980s dress didn’t need a lot of help since the whimsical pattern is quite timeless, as is the fact that it has pockets. I just added a few accessories to update it like these super fun red heart sunglasses, a red patent leather belt, and my favorite yellow striped cardigan.

    Summertime Sweetness

My main fashion philosophy is mixing vintage finds with modern trends and I think this outfit demonstrates that perfectly!

Aside from the contemporary accessories I mentioned, I also wanted to stay true to the decade of this dress with this sweet strawberry tote bag that was gifted to me by my late great grandma. She wasn’t a fashion person but I’d have to think she’d be happy to see her bag still getting use after 30 years. Clearly she made a good investment!

    Vintage Vote

In the spirit of summer, let’s have some fun in the comments. Let me know how you’d wear this vintage dress! If you’re not sure, why not just Pin this post to use as inspiration for later?

  • Red, White, and True Blue Personal Style

    Style Search

Not many people would find a vintage blue jumpsuit hanging in a thrift store basement very appealing, but I do. Why?

That question got my mind hopping down a rabbit trail of where style even comes from and why we choose the clothes that we do. Read on for more of my thoughts on picking a personal style and if it’s even very personal at all!

    True Blue

My earliest clothing influences were found in the pages of magazines. Models, celebrities, and real girls with street style in Seventeen and Teen Vogue greatly appealed to me. Their attitudes seemed cool and I figured it had to do with what they were wearing, which I would later find to be half true.

I had fun emulating their styles with clothes I found at the thrift stores (some things never change!) but still didn’t feel like I was dressing life myself.

Towards the end of my high school education in 2009, fashion blogs were popping up all over the place and I wanted to join in and share my thrifty outfits. It wasn’t until I took that conscious step to document and explore my clothing choices, that I started to discover my personal style.

    Out Of The Blue

My style has come together through lots of trial and error. I’ve learned along the way what I like and dislike to wear, fashion hacks for getting dressed faster, and savvy shopping strategies to get exactly what I want.

But haven’t I just become a product of my influences? Sort of. The way I see it, I’m still the one consciously choosing to wear these things in public so yes, style is still personal.

Clothes are a way to express yourself and speak before we even have a chance to say anything! Some people might not like what I have to “say” but TOUGH! If they don’t like it, they should be glad they’re not the ones wearing a vintage jumpsuit with bright red lipstick. 😉

    Jump To It

I’m not saying you have to start a blog to find your personal style but you do have to make an effort to find it. It’s not just going to surprise you one day while you’re shopping at a department store!

You can take action to find what inspires you by reading a magazine, catching up with friends, watching t.v., scrolling through Instagram, etc.

Then take note of those things and apply them to your closet. Strive to try something new everyday (speaking to your clothes here), take risks, and have fun. If it doesn’t work out, tomorrow is always a new day to try another new outfit!

    Sparkle Factor

The star of my outfit is no doubt the blue sequin dress. It’s on repeat from my birthday this spring and I love that I get to wear it for another celebratory event.

Because my Fourth of July is low key, I wanted to tone down the fancy vibes of my dress as well. That was easy thanks to a white denim jacket, rad sunglasses, and my newly thrifted Converse sneakers.

    American Girl

While my outfit might look like just another cute thing that I would wear, I tried to incorporate a few elements that make it a true American classic.

The dress and jacket are both thrifted items which not only helps our planet out, but also keeps good people employed right here in the US.

And my shiny vintage purse came from Redbird Vintage Box, a company run by two sisters who are living the American dream. They saw a void in the vintage market and chose to start their own business to fill it! How awesome is that?!

    Kids in America

I think this outfit is a great alternative to the ol’ standby of stars & stripes and would be great for anyone looking for something different to wear to express themselves. If you think so, too, then go ahead and Pin this post or share it with a friend!

I hope your fourth of July is a blast! 🎆

    Nautical By Nature

I normally avoid dressing nautical because I don’t even own a boat, but I was inspired by the red & aqua outfit I shared in this summer outfit round-up and it just so happened that my pieces gave off major sailor vibes!

Both the top and the skirt have been around in my closet for a long time so I’m surprised it took so long to think of this combination. Sometimes you just need that perfect hit of inspiration to make something happen!

    On Sail

I updated this outfit from the original inspo by decking myself out in red accessories like this red purse I thrifted that you’ll see in my June thrift haul video on Friday.

I also ‘tide’ up my top to stay true to my ’80s aesthetic. Couldn’t you see this bright look being an alternative Fourth of July outfit?! For shore!

    Sea What I Did There?

As much fun as I had wearing this outfit, I also had a blast going overboard with the puns for this post. Oh whale!

  • Clothes That Rock For an Outdoor Concert & A Colorful Day Trip

Consider this your front row ticket to the greatest fashion around!

    Weekend Update

This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend America’s River Festival in Dubuque, Iowa. And since it’s such a short jaunt from my house, I made it into a day trip!

I’ve been to Dubuque a lot in my life but it’s always changing and I’ve almost never done the same thing twice. This trip was no exception, especially because of the once-in-a-lifetime concert featuring three legends of 1980s music.

Keep reading for outfit details and to get tips for your own day trip to Dubuque!

    What I Wore

My outfit inspiration came from Pat Benatar herself circa 1980-something. She was often in slinky garments and could rock an animal print like nobodies business.

My search for the perfect garment led me to online consignment store thredUP, where I bought this leopard print maxi with high slits. It was a great choice for the humid summer weather! We did have an emergency run to Hartig’s to buy a sewing kit when the slit started unraveling. Thank goodness drug stores are on every corner in the Midwest!

I accessorized my look with a “heart breaker” pin, pork pie hat, moto jacket, red lipstick, and a bum bag. Because nothing says you’re a tourists like a bum bag, amirite?

    Where I Went

Our main objective was secondhand stores and free happenings, both of which were sparse in the downtown district but here’s how we made it work:

Art Wall Crawl. I was in heaven with all the colorful murals! There are too many to list (though here’s a decent round-up) but I definitely want to go back and take more pictures in the near future. Totes Instagram-worthy! And free! (All outfit pictures in this post were taken in front of multiple walls within a few blocks of one another.)

Watershed Cafe. I’m normally an adventurous eater but my recent dietary needs have really put a cramp on my vaca eating habits. I did a bunch of research beforehand and came across Watershed Cafe that had a few options for me.

Afterwards, we popped into the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquariam (it was one of the few air conditioned buildings in town) and learned they had a small food court with some healthy options. I’m definitely keeping that in mind for next time because their atmosphere trumped the cafe by a lot!!

Dubuque Missions Thrift Store. This is one of the few things I’m familiar with as I’ve been there a couple times before. I appreciate how charitable this store is but the location itself leaves much to be desired. While it’s arranged by item type, it crams too much into it’s tiny building. Walking through feels very treacherous and I wouldn’t say it’s handicap accessible, which is unfortunate as that’s who it’s there to help.

I did pick up a few things on my visit as they were running a couple $1 specials when I was there. You’ll see them in my June thrift haul at the end of the month!

Curious Goods Thrift Store. I seem to recall more thrift stores in the downtown area but I guess most have closed since I was last there. But I did come across Curious Goods thrift store in an obscure neighborhood and was happy with it. It featured an organized selection of both old, collectible, and closeout products.

The location is small and off the beaten path which is too bad because the older man running it was very friendly (he was playing with a Bop-it when we walked in. lol) and it was overall an interesting place.

    Who I Watched

The America’s River Festival took place in the Port of Dubuque which is such a lively location. We arrived early, grabbed a great spot, and then were informed that the show was being rushed along as there was impending weather. But a little overcast sky couldn’t stop the rock ‘n roll!

    • First up was Night Ranger. They totally killed it! I went in with no expectations (admittedly I only know there most popular hit Sister Christian) and was blown away.

Their energy was electric, they hammed it up for the crowd as much as possible, and even threw out guitar picks, signed someones vinyl album, and touched as many hands that went up. (I was THISCLOSE to getting fist bumped by lead signer Jack Blades)

Fun Fact: I recently discovered the ’80s movie “The Secrets To My Success” (starring Michael J. Fox) and learned at the concert that Night Ranger sang the eponymous track to that film… guess who else had a song in there? Pat Benatar! Small world!

hannah rupp the outfit repeater dubuque iowa outdoor concert rock style fashion festival night rangerhannah rupp the outfit repeater dubuque iowa outdoor concert rock style fashion festival steppenwolf

Steppenwolf. It’s hard to believe that Steppenwolf has been in the music biz for 50 years! Feel old, yet? They put on an excellent show, considering their age. Something fun they did was play clips from their old shows on the video screens next to the stage.

The crowd really went wild for “Born To Be Wild” but can you blame them? I’d say it was the most popular song of the night.

hannah rupp the outfit repeater dubuque iowa outdoor concert rock style fashion festival pat benatar neil giraldo

Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo. I am so in awe of these two! They put on a powerful show in the short time they were allotted on stage before we all were instructed to leave early because of the weather.

I think Pat was upset most of all and tried to stretch her time out by playing a quick medley before they ushered her off. You can’t say she didn’t try to put on one heck of a show and her enthusiasm was admirable!

    ///

Next year will mark the 15th anniversary of the America’s River Festival and I would highly recommended keeping an eye on the line-up. It’s a well organized venue with lots of grounds to explore, food to fill you up, and merch to spend your dollars on.

I’d say my day in Dubuque, overall, was well spent. I had a good time and can’t wait to go back and try more new things on my next visit. What’s your favorite thing to do in new towns or cities? Tell me in the comments!

Thank you for joining me in my adventures. If you liked this post, be sure to Pin it, share it with a friend, or bookmark it for later. 🙂

This blouse is anything but a lemon!

    Lemon Aid

One question I get asked about thrifting more than any other is what do I do with the stuff that I thrifted? Simply put, I try to give a purpose to my items as quickly as possible.

But rather than explain it to you, I’m gonna show it to you! These white denim shorts I thrifted last month are the perfect example. Because really, how often do you buy clothes and then let them sit around in your closet? Scroll down to read how I avoid shopping dilemmas.. or should I say di-lemons?

    A-peel-ing

Before I go shopping, I try to browse my thrifting wishlist to avoid buying anything I don’t need. You may still slip up and buy unnecessary things but always try to keep in mind what purpose that item will bring to your life and how you can use it.

Once you’ve brought the thrift store bags into your home, put everything away in the same manner you’d put your groceries away. You wouldn’t let your ice-cream sit on the counter top, right? So don’t let you clothes/knick-knacks/etc sit around in bags. You bought it for a reason and I doubt it’s so nobody could see it in a bag!

When I saw these white denim shorts, I knew they’d be perfect to wear this summer in a million ways. So rather than let them sit in my closet, I put them on right away and styled them for this outfit post!

    Pucker Up

Clothes are normally easier to make use of than other things (say a vase you need to buy flowers for or you need to clean a room before you put a piece of furniture in it) which might be why I buy clothes because you can get instant gratification from them.

Since these shorts are super versatile, I styled them in a semi-dressy way with this lemon print blouse, striped cardigan, and white Lulu’s sandals. This outfit also helped put to use a sample of red lipstick I got from Sephora. Win-win!

    [su_note note_color=”#FFFFFF” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”9″ class=””]

Psst.. Patrons can get see these shorts styled another way in bonus outfit post by making a pledge of $5 or more!

    [/su_note]

    Squeezing In The Last Word

If you really find yourself accumulating more stuff than you know what to do with, it might be time for a purge.

I clean out my closet monthly and donate anything that hasn’t been worn in 6 months. A similar exercise would be letting go of anything in your house that no longer brings you joy. It might be tough at first but I promise it gets easier the more you do it!

How do you avoid shopping dilemmas? Let me know in the comments!

    Are you ready for it?

    The Lucky One

Saturday was one of those nights.. my friend invited me to Chicago to watch Taylor Swift perform on her Reputation tour and it was even better than my wildest dreams!

We had amazing seats, were gifted special light-up bracelets to wear that synced up to each song, caught a bunch of T-Swift branded confetti, were dazzled by fireworks, and got to literally dance in the rain with Taylor when it started pouring for the final four songs. I can’t help thinking that was how it ought to be.

I can easily say I’ll remember this concert for a long time to come! It also doesn’t hurt that I got lots of photos of the show + my outfit. Keep scrolling for the details!

I’m A Nightmare Dressed Like a Day Dream

Going to this concert has been on my mind since last fall so I had lots of time to search for the perfect outfit but wouldn’t you know it, I didn’t find this shiny dress on thredUP until just 2 weeks ago?! Talk about last minute!

But I think I made a good choice as I saw lots of other Swifties rockin’ the mermaid sequin look, including my friend that I went with. I did have to add a moto jacket (also from thredUP!) as we had oddly cool temps and then the random rain shower.

A highlight of the show for me was getting to see so many fans dressed in creative costumes and outfits. Everyone looked incredible!

That Classic Red Lip Thing That You Like

The stress of finding a dress doesn’t even compare to choosing the perfect red lip color. Ultimately I went with my trusty Ruby Woo by MAC as I’ve heard a rumor that Tay is also a fan of it.

    End Game

Overall the show was sweeter than fiction and I’d do it over and over again if I could. In fact, I’ll be doing something similar this Saturday, June 9th as I’ll be watching Pat Benatar (Love is a Battlefield!) perform this Saturday at the America’s River Festival in Dubuque, IA.
