  • What I Wore To Style My First Play

    No Costumes, No Problem!

This month has come and gone so fast that I never shared a single costume on my blog.

But rest assured, I was busy with costumes… costumes for a play!

I spent this season styling my first production at a community theater.

While I didn’t document my outfits along the way (or really any of the characters!), I did grab a mirror selfie of the looks I wore backstage before each of the six performances.

If you’ve ever wanted to see what a colorful, dopamine dresser wears to “blend in,” you’re about to find out!

Outfits I Wore For Opening Weekend

Normally, the wardrobe people aren’t really needed at the performances, but our play required us to be hands-on to help with two characters’ quick changes.

The unofficial uniform of backstage is wearing head-to-toe black. This is a little outside my norm, but I teased that it was my “Halloween” and tried to add interest to all my dark looks.

I did sneak in some pink—but can you blame me?

Outfits I Wore For Our Final Weekend

Our final weekend deviated from the plan, for me, anyway. I took one night off to sit in the audience and watch the show with my mom. I stuck with my all-black uniform, just to be consistent. Plus, I had this beautiful beaded sweater I thrifted last year that I wanted to wear with my mom because she loves butterflies.

Then I only ended up dressing for one other show and missed the final performance because I unexpectedly came down with a cold. (Pictures of my PJs are not documented. LOL)

    What’s Next For Me

All in all, I had a great time co-styling my very first production. While I’ve spent most of my life on stage (and your screens!), dressing characters in a play was something I wanted to challenge myself to do. I try not to let my invisible illness hold me back, and luckily this project (mostly) fit in with my energy levels and talents.

Similarly, I have loved working in retail for the past seven years and really finding my calling with styling. So I think my background in acting and styling put me in the best position possible to be able to pull this off.

Plus, I’m happy to announce that I’ve already been asked to style a show on my own next spring! Stay tuned to see how that goes!

  • Here’s How To Look Stylish This Fall Without Wearing a Sweater

    Quintessential Fall Fashion

Wearing another dress for fall? Groundbreaking.

This time, instead of an unseasonal maxi dress, I am wearing a floral long-sleeve number.

Our weather finally cooled off, and I got to have a quintessential fall day in the perfect autumn outfit.

For anyone still thinking inside the box that fall fashion is only about sweater weather, let me use this outfit to change your mind!

Continue reading to get my tips on how to style yourself this season without relying on a sweater. (Although sweaters for fall are great too!)

Why I Bought a Dress For Fall

Fall is a fun time to experiment in your closet, play with your layers, and try something new.

If you’re stuck in a jeans and sweater rut to chase away the chills, this outfit should inspire you to branch out and try something new!

Hannah is a white female with short brown hair. She's standing outside near a tree, smiling, wearing a blue floral dress, brown tights, brown knee high boots, and a teal beret.

My long-sleeve floral dress with a mock turtleneck has been on my thrifting wishlist for seven years! I first spotted it on ThredUp and wanted it for an event but knew it wouldn’t arrive in time.

Even though the event came and went, I never stopped thinking about this dress (or adding it to my ThredUp wishlist)!

Finally, this year, I decided to just buy the dress and live out all my fall fashion fantasies with it.

Bringing To Life My Fall Fashion Fantasy

So, what is my fall fashion fantasy? Colors that reflect the changing leaves, pieces that invoke nostalgia, like tights and boots, plus cozy elements like a thrifted beret.

This outfit checked all the boxes for me. Plus, I wore it on a beautiful fall day to walk around and support local artists in my hometown. It could not have felt more perfect!

Fall Outfits That Don’t Involve a Sweater

If you’re like me and want to try something new this fall without relying on a sweater, here are a few outfit combinations I would suggest:

    • Destructed denim and a utilitarian jacket
    • A short skirt, turtleneck, and tights… à la The Nanny!
    • A cute long-sleeve shirt and overalls
    • A flouncy blouse and non-denim pants (think palazzo pants!)
    • A dress and a chunky cardigan
    • A midi skirt, button-down, and sweater vest
    • Colored denim, a sweatshirt, and a classic camel coat

  • Pumpkin Spice Can Wait — I’m Not Done With My Summer Dresses Yet

Dressing For Hot Temps In The Fall

Fall is great and all, but we in the Midwest are experiencing record-breaking temperatures, making it much hotter than normal!

As a sleepy girl, this helps me buy some time before I need to swap out my seasonal pieces.

As excited as I am for sweater weather, I am happy to play in my summer closet a little longer and wear cute things like this green maxi dress I thrifted at the start of the season. It makes me feel like I live in a truly warmer climate and I’m excited by the challenge of getting dressed!

Let’s explore why it works for right now and how you can avoid switching out your closet for a while, too!

Why a Maxi Dress Is Great For Fall

Towards the end of summer, you’re probably like me and craving the cooler temps and lots of layers. A maxi dress is the in-between outfit that gives you the layers you want with the temperature regulation that you need.

Also a bonus? It’s a one-and-done look! Everyone will think you’re so put together, but really you’re just done with summer and threw on something comfy.

How I Styled a Maxi Dress For Fall

I had a recent family celebration and was trying to dress in a way that matched the energy we all had.

This thrifted green maxi dress fit the bill. It was fun to style with rainbow accessories to keep the color story going.

I didn’t actually use a yellow purse because I was too busy snapping photos, but it would have been my choice if I had been carrying a bag that day.

    • Pair a maxi dress with a cropped denim jacket or cardigan for a balanced look.
    • Tall boots look chic with a long maxi dress or midi-length skirt.
    • A sleeveless maxi dress, like mine, can be used to transition layers, like a flouncy blouse underneath or a sheer mesh shirt, as seen in this outfit post.

What else would you add to this list?

    Summer to Fall Transitional Outfits

It’s that time of year again when our closets send us into seasonal confusion.

It’s cold in the morning, hot at night, and you never know what the air situation is going to be like in any given business.

Yes, it’s time for summer-to-fall transitional outfits!

On top of changing temperatures, there’s also the pull of wanting to wear fall trends before the official first day of fall (which is September 22nd this year!).

How do you add a sweater when it’s 90°F? Is that even a possibility?!

Thankfully, as a stylist and social media manager, I’m at the front line of incoming fashion and have picked up a few tips while playing dress-up in a retail store.

Here’s what fashion at maurices looks like right now and how I’m wearing it for this weird in-between weather!

    Trending for Fall: Plaid Shirts

Is it really fall if you don’t wear a plaid shirt? These are easy to pick up at any thrift store, but if you want endless options and new shacket (shirt + jacket) styles, you’ll want to go to a traditional fashion boutique like maurices for your plaid shirts.

Style a plaid shirt now by wearing it loose over a graphic tee (for when it’s colder out) or tie it around your waist for those hot, humid days.

    Trending For Fall: Puffer Vests

A puffer vest is a staple of any fall and winter wardrobe. While they’re tough to wear in summer, you can still try a lighter option and wear it with sleeveless garments for an avant-garde look.

Or just buy a puffer vest now at a good deal and hang on to it until the temps really drop!

    Trending For Fall: Denim

Denim is always in style, and this season we’re seeing a return of skinny jeans, light washes, barrel legs, and tasteful deconstruction.

You can wear denim any way you please! I like cuffing it in the summer for a faux capri kind of look. But in fall and winter, anything goes!

    Trending For Fall: Warm Tones

The number one way to start wearing fall fashion trends right now? Colors!

I think most of us naturally gravitate towards warmer hues (even if we’re rainbow lovin’ people!) because it mimics the changing leaves outside. Get in on this trend by experimenting with rich browns, burnt orange, deep blues and greens, and more!

    In Clothes-ing

Which look caught your eye? I’d love to hear your favorite in the comments!

I hope these outfits spark some inspiration for your own wardrobe or give you the confidence to try out a new trend. If you need a style number or more details before your next shopping trip, don’t hesitate to ask—I’ve got you covered!

And if any of these looks stood out to you, don’t forget to save them to your outfit inspiration board on Pinterest. Your support means the world—thank you for reading!

  • A DIY Jack-o’-Lantern Halloween Costume

    A DIY Jack-o'-Lantern Halloween Costume www.theoutfitrepeater.comDIY Jack-O’-Lantern Halloween Costume

I take being the cutest pumpkin in the patch quite literally!

Based on that, I decided to make my own jack-o’-lantern costume from materials I had lying around.

It was very easy and would be a great last-minute costume or even an outfit to wear to a pumpkin patch.

Best of all? You don’t have to have any real pumpkin carving skills!

Just grab something orange from your closet, and some scissors, and you’re ready to go!

What You Need For a Jack-o’-Lantern Costume

The base of my jack-o’-lantern costume is an orange sweater dress (or maybe a sweater? It’s quite long!) that I thrifted.

Because you’ll be modifying your clothing item, I recommend choosing something you don’t have a lot of attachment to, like a thrifted shirt or dress in any shade of orange!

And finally, to make your jack-o’-lantern Halloween costume, you’ll need either sticky-back black paper or felt. I found mine at the Dollar Tree!

How To Put Together Your Own Jack-o’-Lantern Costume

I freehanded a jack-o’-lantern design on my black sticky-back paper, cut it out, and then placed it on my sweater.

You could go one step further and buy iron-on paper and attach your jack-o’-lantern face more permanently to your garment. But I do plan to re-wear this sweater in the future so I just needed a temporary solution!

an orange sweater, thrifted beret, and tights are transformed into a DIY jack-o'-lantern halloween costume

To complete the look, I think it’s best to wear orange pants to really convey the idea that you’re a human-sized pumpkin! Or you could wear tights if you chose a dress.

Finally, top it off with a black beret (mine is thrifted!) to emulate the stem on top of a pumpkin! A brown beret would work great, too!

    Halloween Costume Takeaways

This jack-o’-lantern costume is easy to make and is also a great way to get into the Halloween spirit without breaking the bank! It’s a classic costume that everyone will recognize.

You could make a bunch of different variations and wear them all together as a family or group “pumpkin patch” costume.

So why not give it a try and see how creative you can get? Be sure to bookmark or Pin this post so you can re-create it later!

    Dressing For In-between Seasons

Welcome to pre-fall fashion where everything’s made up and the points don’t matter. It’s that special time of year when your closet gets confused and we’re all on the struggle bus trying to wear fall trends without sweating!

Normally I share an outfit around this time that speaks to embracing layers or transitional dressing but this year I’m switching things up!

Instead of pushing ahead and trying to wear fall trends, I’m mixing different seasons from my closet and creating new looks without buying anything new!

It’s my version of “high-low” dressing but instead of putting together expensive and cheap items, I’m pairing clothes from spring and fall to create a seasonal Frankenstein outfit!

Keep scrolling for the final product and to get tips on creating your own unique look!

    What I’m Wearing

Flared jeans are a year-round staple but for the purpose of my outfit demonstration, mine were bought in the spring so they automatically feel like a spring item to me. Not to mention they’re a lighter wash which is very reminiscent of the arrival of a new season.

My top was a summer thrift store find and the florals couldn’t be more warm weather appropriate!

When the top and bottom are combined, it creates a look that’s expectant of fall but still cool enough for the hot summer days.

    Why My Outfit Works

This outfit is a great example of mixing different seasons from my closet. It’s got the best of various seasons all rolled into one yet feels perfect for the moment.

I love using this style tip to extend the potential of my closet. Why be limited to one certain season or style?

Life’s too short to hang on to clothes for a long time and wait for the right time to wear them. Today could be the right time… unless it’s a wool sweater on a 90 degree day, then you should probably wait. 😉

    Looking Ahead To Fall Fashion

There are so many different combinations you could come up with that could have the same effect as my outfit. Think of long pants from the winter with summer tank tops. Or a denim jacket over a light dress!

Let me know what you think of this look and how you’re mixing up the clothes in your closet to get through this transitional fashion season!

  • 3 Stylish Ways To Wear Red Suspenders

3 Stylish Ways To Wear Red Suspenders | www.theoutfitrepeater.comHow To Wear Red Suspenders

I’m back by popular request with another round-up of women’s outfits using suspenders!

This time there’s an extra challenge – the suspenders are the color RED!

I thrifted these red suspenders shortly after my last blog post because I was still in the creative head space to try styling them.

I had a lot of fun brainstorming and coming up with new ideas to share with you.

At last, I’ve photographed all the outfits and can present to you 3 outfit ideas for colorful suspenders.

I hope these inspire you to create some colorful outfits in your own closet!

Wearing Red Suspenders With Complementary Colors

The main function of suspenders is to hold up a pair of trousers so it’s an obvious choice to wear them with denim!

I chose a pair of thrifted gaucho shorts for a fun, exaggerated look. Then I added a berry print top to pull in the red color of the suspenders and help tie everything together.

Couldn’t you just picture wearing this to go apple picking or on an old-fashioned summer outing?!

Wearing Red Suspenders With The Same Color

My favorite way to style these red suspenders is with a pair of red palazzo pants. I love how they created an overall effect! And who wouldn’t want to own a pair of red overalls?!

I continued the red theme with a vintage ringer tee and balanced everything out with white sneakers.

The look is a little juvenile but playful. I felt like I should be hosting a children’s TV series!

Wearing Red Suspenders With A Rainbow Skirt

Last but not least, I revisited wearing red suspenders with a skirt. I love this thrifted rainbow striped skirt I bought on thredUP – it goes with everything!

I leaned into the retro effect that was created and donned a plain white t-shirt, chunky red high heels, and a polka dot scarf around my neck.

What I Learned From Wearing Suspenders

Now that I’ve got two blog posts about wearing suspenders under my belt (no pun intended), I’ve learned a few things along the way!

First, it helps to have someone around to clip them in place. I didn’t personally struggle with this because of my Ehler-Danlos Syndrome but could see how it could hinder someone else!

I would also recommend playing with the adjustments to find a length you’re comfortable with.

Finally, a few of you weighed in on my last post and had suggestions for how to wear suspenders if you have a larger bust. Y’all recommended buying suspenders with a much wider strap and a long length so it stretches over the girls, or wearing ordinary suspenders to the sides of your chest.

It’s also worth considering the shape of your shoulders and their slope. If they’re very sloped AND you have a big bust, then you’ll have a trickier time overall with suspenders.

If you have any additional comments to share, please let me know! I’m open to learning from you!

hannah rupp outfit, white graphic tee, red blazer, red plaid pants, and red headbandWhat Do You Wear in November?

November is that weird time when we’re living post-Halloween, expectant of a big turkey dinner (if you’re in the US) and half the world is already decorating for Christmas.

What do you wear for such an in-between time? Is it too soon for an ugly Christmas Sweater? Is it too late to wear black and orange?

    Enter: plaid pants.

Plaid pants are my solution for having something vaguely festive, still a little spooky, and definitely only in style if you’re Avril Lavigne in 2004.

My red plaid pants were thrifted during an epic thrift excursion with some of my family last year.

I’ve had them on my thrifting wishlist for many years and was excited to find them. I’ve since worn them with graphic tees, sweaters, sweatshirts, and every top in between.

I styled them up recently for an outing with a friend and liked the outfit so much that I wanted to snap a photo (or like 40) and break the look down for you. Let’s dig in!

How I Wore My Thrifted Plaid Pants

My outfit actually started off as a simple jeans and an X-Files graphic tee combo. But I was feeling drawn to this unworn red blazer in my closet (this is its inaugural wear on the blog, please say hi 👋)

Once I added such a big pop of color, it only seemed right to keep adding more. So I added my red thrifted plaid pants and red ballet flats.. and then a red headband because, why not?!

My friend that I met up with is very used to my “interesting” outfit choices so it felt like an OK time to experiment! We ended up at a thrift store where I even got a few compliments from strangers. Winning!

Outfit Photo Dump: What I Wore To Work At MauricesWhat I Wore At Maurices

It’s time for another round-up of outfits that I’ve worn to work at Maurices!

Are you new here and wondering what I do at Maurices? That’s a good question!

I am a social media manager that creates content (photos and videos) and posts to the social media pages of a local Maurices store.

My day-to-day tasks usually consist of working from home, keeping up with social trends, writing copy, and editing posts.

But at least once a week, I go into my actual store to get familiar with new products and take photos and videos.

When I’m in the store, I try on a lot of clothes and take a lot of pictures which I can then share with you here on my fashion blog!

Here’s the latest in what I wore while working. Almost everything is current Maurices. Let me know if you need a style number or direct link!

    Outfit Repeating in Overalls

I have to start this post with these glorious flared denim overalls I recently bought from the store. I had been eyeing them for over a month because they looked similar to a pair on my thrifting wishlist.

A sale came around and I decided to snatch them up. They were worth every penny! The denim is stretchy so I can really get down and move around during my shifts.

I repeated them back-to-back because they’re just that good. I just changed out my sneakers and shirt to get a slightly different look.

Fit note: I’m kind of between sizes right – about an 8 – but bought the 6 because I knew these were stretchy. It was a good call. I could almost go down to a 4!

    Hats Off To This Look

This billowy patchwork blouse didn’t stick around in our store for very long. It’s so gorgeous and was fun to dress up with faux leather pants for a date night inspired outfit!

hannah's smiling wearing a black hat, billowy pink top, and black faux leather leggings

    Keepin’ It Casual

Is she going on a walk, running errands, or catching up with her friends for coffee? The girl wearing this look is probably doing all of the above AND she’s pretty freakin’ comfortable.

hannah is standing with her hands in the pocket of a maroon vest and is wearing a striped sweatshirt and tan cargo pants

    Yeehaw For Fall Fashion

Fashion is all about having fun and experimenting with different looks. This western-inspired outfit is definitely different for me but it achieved the task of showing off new arrivals. Plus it’s cute to boot!

hannah is wearing a tan wide brim hat, red plaid button up over a matching sweater, and light wash denim

    Halloween Costume Ideas from Maurices

While Maurices has a lot of categories (womens, girls, home, PJs) they don’t do Halloween costumes. So I got creative and pulled pieces from the floor that could be re-imagined into fright night looks.

Below are an animal, Barbie/Elle Woods, FBI agent, and a farmer with her scarecrow. This challenge was a blast!

    Getting Red-dy For The Holidays

Again with these overalls! They’re great for wearing when you don’t know what to expect during a shift – like spending 2 hours sitting on the floor making wreaths in a fitting room!

The wreaths are part of our holiday floor set and were meant to be put together by the associates. I happily accepted the task because I love crafting. It really was a lot of fun! (My fingers full of papercuts wouldn’t say the same though lol)

hannah is standing in a fitting room, holding a christmas wreath. she's wearing a red long sleeve top and denim overalls

    Channel The Flannel

It’s not fall (or the holidays) without a lot of plaid and flannels.

My personal wardrobe is lacking but thankfully I have a store full to choose from and play with when I’m putting together outfits at work. This was a look to share some new arrivals. I love how each piece is pretty basic but when you put it all together, you get a really chic ensemble!

    Thrifted Things

I thought I’d end this round-up with an all thrifted outfit (except the boots) I was wearing when I got into the store. It’s a little casual and a lot kick-ass!

  • Fall Street Style In The Midwest

    What’s Next in Fashion

I recently connected with a local boutique to collaborate on posts for their social media pages. It’s a small, women-owned business selling current trends and includes many brands that support or give back to humanity. (The jewelry brand, Pura Vida, for example)

With all that said, I’m excited to share some recent outfits I’ve styled from the boutique! The boutique is not currently sold online but is considering adding that option in the future. For now, these are just purely inspirational pictures for my online community!

    Back to Basics

My first photoshoot (aka, me and my tripod!) was photographing a super cozy 2 piece jogger set. I styled the cropped hoodie with Kancan jeans for an on-the-go look.

    Stepping Out In Style

The boutique has an amazing range of high-quality clothing.

Me, being me, goes a little extra and had a full-blown photoshoot in the streets. Can you blame me with clothes like this?! They’re pretty different from what I wear in real life but it’s so fun playing dress up!

    Fabulous Fall Fashion

I really channeled the flannel for these fall looks and got into the street style spirit. These looks aren’t something you normally see in small Midwest towns but it’s about time that changed, amirite?
