  • Winter Capsule Wardrobe Idea: Thrifted, Colorful, and Cool

    Colorful Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Winter is both the best and the worst time to get dressed. On the one hand, it’s cold enough to layer your outfits and create interesting looks. On the other hand, you’re freezing, and everything ends up covered by a coat.

Despite these pros and cons, I still love playing dress-up in winter—even if it’s just for fun while working from home. To keep things exciting while stuck indoors, I created a colorful capsule wardrobe to gamify my winter style.

For this capsule, I asked my Instagram followers to help me choose a color palette. Then, I pulled 10 pieces from my closet that matched the vibe. From there, I experimented with different combinations and came up with some really fun outfits!

As you scroll through this post, I hope you embrace the same playful spirit. Some outfits turned out better than others, but they all came from the joy of experimenting with what I already own.

Enjoy this little burst of winter wardrobe inspiration!

How I Chose My Colorful Winter Capsule Wardrobe

As I mentioned, my Instagram followers were the ones behind choosing the color palette for this capsule wardrobe. I offered them a choice of four different color combos, and this is the one they chose:

It’s a cool, dusty situation. A little different for me, but I love a challenge!

After learning about the color palette, I went through my closet to find 10 pieces (10 is always my favorite for capsule wardrobe challenges) and pulled a selection of tops, bottoms, basics, and statement pieces.

Essentially, I wanted a well-rounded wardrobe that I could really play with and not get bored of. It was just a bonus that almost everything was thrifted!

Altogether, this is what I picked out and used to make the outfits in this post. Coats, shoes, and accessories were all bonus items that I didn’t count towards my 10 items!

Colorful Winter Capsule Wardrobe: A Sequin Skirt

Nothing can get you through the long, dark days of winter like sequins! For me, I chose this beautiful vintage teal skirt that I thrifted last summer.

The color is very reflective of freshly fallen snow, while the sparkles keep my spirits bright. It’s also a great transitional piece to go from the holiday season into the winter months.

If you’re in a cold climate like me, remember to layer up with tights if you have a skirt or dress in your winter capsule wardrobe. 😉

Colorful Winter Capsule Wardrobe: Fun Pants

Fun pants are just a staple of my life year-round, but for the purpose of this challenge, I chose a powder blue pair of trousers.

These can be dressed up with luxe tones or high heels, or dressed down with a graphic tee and jeans.

I’m obsessed with the color and can’t wait to remix them with more hues in the future! What color should I pair them with next?

Colorful Winter Capsule Wardrobe: Classic Denim

Finally, we have a classic pair of denim. I’m sure these are a staple in most people’s wardrobes, as they’re easy to pair with almost anything.

I tried a few styling tricks, like tucking, adding scarves, and layering, to add interest to an otherwise ordinary article of clothing.

What would you include in your winter capsule wardrobe? I’d love to hear your take on this challenge!

Making a Case For Wide-Leg Jeans

Wide-leg jeans: you either love them or hate them!

As you can see from the post, I am a big fan of wide-leg jeans and my goal is to convince as many skeptics as possible.

To me, wide-leg jeans are a refreshing change from tight, clingy skinny jeans or leggings.

The extra fabric is great for those of us with strong legs, and the high waist detail helps to elongate our legs.

Of course, there are some challenges—like how to style them, what to do if they’re too long, and whether petite people can wear them.

Let’s explore 3 simple ways to incorporate wide-leg jeans into your wardrobe, so you can confidently join the trend and avoid any fashion mistakes.

Wearing Wide-Leg Jeans with a Cardigan

What kind of top pairs best with wide-leg jeans? It’s best to keep it simple and fitted, so it doesn’t compete with the volume on the bottom.

But simple doesn’t have to mean boring!

For this look, I wore my wide-leg jeans with a yellow striped cardigan buttoned up to resemble a sweater. I then added yellow accessories to brighten the whole look.

Dressing Down Wide Leg Jeans With a Coat

How do you wear a coat or jacket with wide-leg jeans? There are many possibilities but my favorite is a long jacket, like a trench coat or pea coat, to continue the creation of a long line.

Whether you’re 5’2″ or 6’1″, this style tip is a hit.

Here’s how I wore a long pink coat with the wide-leg jeans. Underneath my coat is a fitted long-sleeved sweater and I wore pink ballet flats to keep it all together. Notice I wore pointed-toe flats to keep my feet from getting lost in the jeans!

Dressing Up Wide-Leg Jeans With Heels

What if the jeans are just too long? Find a good tailor or embrace wearing shoes with a platform. Whether that’s a wedge, clog, or your favorite heels.

Here I dressed up my wide-leg jeans with a thrifted white blouse and brown boho accessories. It’s still casual but elevated.

Wide-Leg Jeans: Your Style Questions Answered (and More Tips, Just Because!)

What else is there to know about wearing wide-leg jeans?

Rise matters: low-rise denim comes off as very dated, so look for something mid or higher-rise to suit your torso.

Play around with juxtaposition: these aren’t the JNCO wide-leg jeans of the ’90s. They’re much more sophisticated these days you can play around with a lot of different styles on top from my boho example to ultra-feminine, tomboy, preppy, or whatever your heart desires. Just keep your proportions in check and you should be OK!

Roll ’em up: if the volume is still too much, cuff your jeans. Even if you don’t have a volume issue, this small styling trick can add versatility and create many style options.

Open up:  keep in mind the leg opening. If you’re petite, go with something smaller. If you’re tall, you can get away with something more dramatic. This goes for your shape, too. You’re trying to balance your body, not swallow it up. Sometimes you have to kiss a lot of toads to find your (denim) prince!

Are you someone that feels like you have to have a reason to get dressed up?

Maybe your “special” clothes don’t feel good enough for running errands, going out for lunch, or working from home.

    I feel ya.

But have you ever dressed up just for the fun of it?

Getting dressed up can make you feel confident and put-together, even if you’re just staying in. It can also be a fun way to express yourself and your style. And who knows, you might even feel inspired to do something special after you get dressed up!

Here’s an outfit I recently put on just for the heck of it and some takeaways for how you can easily incorporate fancy clothes into your everyday wardrobe.

How I Wear My Fancy Clothes Every Day

My outfit started with this pretty pastel green top that I thrifted on a whim. It feels so ethereal and feminine!

I don’t have any specific plans coming up that required a blouse like it but I figured I would make an occasion. These photos ended up being the occasion!

This color combination popped into my head and I was so excited to try it out. It was one of the rare times when an outfit in my head looked exactly how I thought it would.

What do you think of this mint green and magenta combo? Would you wear it?

The Benefits of Wearing Fancy Clothes

While I do hope to wear this outfit out someday, even just putting it on for these photos made me feel good!

It was also a fun creative exercise for me (my favorite form of exercise), it inspired me to look up nearby events in my area that I could wear it to, and it made every mundane task around my house feel like something important was happening.

Wearing Fancy Clothes in Everyday Life

With a little bit of effort, you can easily incorporate fancy clothes into your everyday wardrobe. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and find what works best for you!

And lest you think all moments of this photoshoot were ripped straight from a fairytale, here is a photo of how I looked walking out to the field to avoid bugs and critters! lol

I don’t have many occasions that require me to change outfits throughout the day but Saturday was one of those rare times for me.

From Event Hosting to Running Errands

I got to host my own program at the Monroe Public Library that was all about thrifting and then run errands in the afternoon. Bloggers, they’re just like us!

It was my first public speaking situation and my first time acting as a hostess with the mostest for a community gathering!

My outfit was carefully chosen to express my excitement for the day. I wore the dress as-is with high heels for hosting and then changed into a white denim jacket & flip flops for grocery shopping. Nothing like an outfit that can pull double duty!

(And yes I outfit repeated this look from last year!)

But let’s chat more about the program! It was such a fulfilling day and I want to share as much as I can from it.

    The Hostess With The Mostest

I was nervous beforehand of who would be there but was pleasantly surprised to recognize all but two faces.

The intimate crowd was preferable because that way it allowed us to have some great conversations about thrifting without much pressure, which was a highlight for me.

    Step By Step

Planning the program was fun but there were a few times where I felt a bit like a Bridezilla with my demands. Luckily everything came together and the decor was colorful, the crowd was enthusiastic, and the slideshow went off without a hitch.

So I guess it was like a wedding to me?! lol
