    Care Bear Costume Cuteness

The countdown to Halloween is on and I am so excited to share this FUN last-minute Care Bear costume with you!

I care about the 1980s a lot and Care Bears are a staple of that decade. Plus, they’ve managed to endure over the years and still have a way of resonating with children (and kiddults!) today.

My favorite Care Bear is Funshine and is who I based my Halloween costume on. It took about 30 minutes to put together with things I already had in my closet.

Let’s dive into the details of this Halloween costume that I’m sure you’ll heart!

    Finding Funshine

A Care Bear costume is one of the most simple last-minute Halloween costumes you can put together.

As I mentioned, everything came from my closet. I used a hooded sweatshirt I thrifted from ThredUp, skinny jeans (sweatpants would be even better to mimic the cuddliness of the Care Bears) and socks or slippers in the same color.

New ThredUp customers can get 45% off AND free shipping on their first order by using my link!

From there, I got to work DIYing a few pieces to transform in Funshine.

I added the iconic badge to my belly to signify which Care Bear I was representing. I did this using felt and a couple stitches, so that it can be removed from my sweatshirt after Halloween and put back in my closet.

My ears are simply construction paper cut into the shape of ears and safety pinned to my hood! If you don’t have a hood, you could add ears to a headband for a simple alternative.

Crafty Touches For Your Care Bear Costume

To really sell this Care Bear costume, you could continue to add small touches to your clothes or body like hearts (ala my heart nose!) or heart patches the bottom of your socks or slippers.

diy yellow funshine care bear halloween costume and vintage stuffed animal

As a lifelong Care Bear fan, I picked one (or three!) of my favorite matching Care Bears to join me in this photoshoot. Together we make up over 40 years of Care Bear history!

    Sharing is Caring

While this costume is normally reserved for children, I loved being able to capture the magic as an adult! This would be a great group costume for you and your family, a crew of children, or a bunch of adults who also love tapping into their inner child. You could each represent a different color Care Bear or even make up an entirely new one!

What do you think of this costume? Have you ever dressed up as a toy from your childhood? Let me know in the comments!

If you enjoyed this costume, please be sure to Pin it to recreate at your next costume party!

  • My Thrifted Pee-wee Herman Halloween Costume

thrifted pee-wee herman halloween costumeMy Pee-Wee Herman Halloween Costume

I know you are but what am I? I’m Pee-wee Herman!

Pee-wee Herman is an instantly recognizable character with his gray suit, red bowtie, and boyish looks.

I grew up watching him and have always carried a bit of him with me as an adult. Whether it was a clever comeback or a funny face. No doubt he had a big impact on my life!

When I read of his passing earlier this year, I felt like I lost a friend.

To honor Pee-wee, I wanted to dress up as him for Halloween this year. Like many of the costumes I’ve been sharing, it’s been on my list for YEARS to do it.

What happened next was nothing short of MAGIC!

How My Pee-wee Halloween Costume Went Viral

Pee-wee Herman has a photo gallery on his website devoted to costumes created by his fans and I always wanted to join the page. I just never felt like I had the right pieces in my closet and have searched high and low at thrift stores for the perfect ensemble.

I dug through my closet and put together an outfit that resembled his infamous look. Everything was thrifted except for the white sneakers, and oh how I wish they were the actual white loafers!

Because of its inaccurate recreation, I only planned to share it here on my blog. But, just for kicks, I submitted it to the Pee-wee Herman legacy page on Facebook.

I had forgotten about it and then woke up one morning and my picture was all over Facebook and Instagram! The legacy page had chosen my costume and story to feature for all to see.

I was basically walking on air the whole day. It felt unreal!

If you’re here because of that viral post, thank you. Getting shared was an unexpected surprise and the positive feedback has been incredible!

    The Legacy Of Pee-wee Herman

I’ll leave this blog post with the words I shared in my story –

Life’s not about being perfect, it’s just about showing up and being weird!

If you have a Pee-wee memory or favorite quote, I would love it if you shared it with me in the comments! Thanks for checking out my Halloween costume! I’ll let you let me let you go now!

  • My Weird Al Halloween Costume

weird al Yankovic Halloween costumeWeird Al Halloween Costume

Oh, this is a story ’bout a guy named Al… he’s kind of weird.

Despite the name Weird Al, he’s an incredible entertainer who’s spanned multiple decades and generations with his song parodies and irreverant humor in pop culture.

It just feels right to copy a guy who’s made a living copying other people.

I’ve had this Halloween costume on my bucketlist for years and it was about time that I put it together. I’ve already got similar features so why not go for it?

If you’re looking to have a stress-free and hilarious Halloween, then keep scrolling to learn more about how I came put together my Weird Al Halloween costume!

Why I Dressed As Weird Al

Weird Al has had a major impact on me growing up! His humor, style, and personality are awesome!

Even more than his music, his 1989 movie “UHF” played on repeat during my childhood and has bled into my families lexicon ever since.

Weird Al definetly helped me embrace my own weirdness over the years!

My Weird Al Yankovic Halloween Costume

How I Put Together My Weird Al Costume

Replicating Weird Al’s look isn’t very hard because he’s mostly followed the same simple outfit formula for most of his career – a Hawaiian shirt, skinny jeans, and sneakers. Everything was already in my closet but could easily be thrifted!

My Weird Al Yankovic Halloween Costume My Weird Al Yankovic Halloween Costume

Then just add in some curly hair, glasses, and a big ol’ mustache and you’ve got a complete look! I wore my hair natural but did touch it up a little bit with a curling iron so it was extra big. You could easily acheive this with a wig!

My mustache is drawn on with eyeliner and my glasses are old Dollar Tree aviator sunglasses that I punched the lenses out of.

Tips For Recreating Your Own Weird Al Halloween Costume

Let’s be real, the best part of this costume is the comfort. No tight bodysuits or uncomfortable masks here. Just a breezy shirt and some chill vibes.

You can even score bonus points if you carry around an accordion and randomly burst into song throughout the night!

If you’re a fan of Weird Al, then this would be a great Halloween costume for you to wear! Please be sure to Pin this post or tag me on Instagram so I can see your version of Weird Al!

  • The Baby-sitters Club Lookbook!

the babysitters club book cover image with hannah rupp title says lookbookThe Internet’s Great Idea

I’m a huge fan of the book series, The Babysitters Club, and I know I’m not the only one given the number of requests I’ve gotten over the years to see my BSC collection, recreate the book covers, and, finally, make an entire lookbook video with outfits inspired by each of the characters!

The last one has been on my to-do list since it was first suggested many years ago. It’s a great idea, right? Dress up as each of the main characters (sans Abby, sorry!) and interpret their style through my own creative lens.

It’s taken a while to get here but I knew with the recent premiere of season two of The Babysitters Club series on Netflix, now was the time to take action.

I am so thrilled that the series is getting a new life on the streaming service and that a whole new generation is being introduced to the characters. It’s the (healthy) girl boss energy we need right now!

What also makes this video so fitting for me is how much I love ’80s pop culture. It was fun shuffling through my thrifted wardrobe and pulling out some of my raddest vintage so each character was just right.

Without further ado, let’s check out the looks!

    The Babysitters Club Lookbook

My lookbook is in two parts! Part one is a video for those who prefer movement and the coolest song ever written playing in the background.

Part two is for those who like pictures of each of the looks. (The pictures also make it easier to save a look to recreate later, rather than trying to screenshot a moving video!)

[irp posts=”8973″ name=”I Dressed Like The Babysitters Club For One Week And This Is What Happened”]

Say Hello To The Babysitters Club

My older sister unofficially introduced me to the BSC series when I was a kid and, when I finished my video and sent her a rough draft, she gave me the biggest compliment – without reading the name titles, she could immediately tell who each character was. Can you?

In order, we have Kristy Thomas, Mary Anne Spier, Claudia Kishi, Stacey McGill, Dawn Schafer, Mallory Pike, and Jessi Ramsey.

Which character do you relate to most? I’m definitely a Claudia! I also want to wear that outfit again for another day. haha

    [irp posts=”13630″ name=”The Ultimate 1980s Halloween Costume Round-Up”]

    The End

Thank you so much for suggesting this video idea and for being patient with me in putting it all together. I’d say it was well worth the wait. I can pizza toast to that!

  • DIY Care Bear Sleeping Eye Mask

DIY Care Bear sleeping eye mask how to tutorial retro funshine 1980s hannah rupp the outfit repeater

Why did I make a Care Bear eye mask? I just felt like it.

    My Inspiration

The real inspiration behind this Care Bear sleeping eye mask came during one of my nap sessions. I take a lot of them to manage my chronic fatigue and I figured if I’m going to sleep all the time, why not do it with style?

I’ve always loved wearing cute sleeping eye masks but have trouble finding them. One day when I was laying in bed, surrounded by my favorite yellow Funshine Care Bear, it struck me that it would be so fun to have a Care Bear eye mask! I searched high and low online but couldn’t find one so I put my crafting cap on and came up with my own design. Best of all, this can be customized to your favorite Care Bear character. Mine just happens to be Funshine!

If you’re afraid of sewing, don’t sweat it. I’m definitely a novice and just took my time to get all the stitches somewhat lined up. Believe me, this mask ain’t perfect but it’s adorable-ness trumps everything. lol

How To Make Your Own Care Bear Eye Mask

DIY Care Bear sleeping eye mask how to tutorial retro funshine 1980s hannah rupp the outfit repeater

    What You’ll Need:

    • 1 sheet of white felt and 1 sheet of colored felt (shop exact here)
    • Thick elastic band (shop exact here)
    • Small needle and 4 different color threads (Black, White, Brown, and your chosen Care Bear color)
    • A small amount of a silky fabric
    • Fabric scissors (shop exact here)
    • Heart shaped button for nose (shop exact here)
    • Fabric Fusion glue (shop exact here)
    • Marker and pins, optional

(Please note: To fill in the eyes, I used a back stitch and a satin stitch. The outer edge of the mask was secured using a hemming stitch. And the ears, elastic, and eyes were attached with a simple running stitch. These are open to your interpretation and skill level.)

In total this project took me about 3 hours to complete. By the time I was done, I needed a nap so I slipped it on and it held up perfectly while still blocking out light!

Don’t forget to #ShareYourCare this Sunday, September 19th. Use the hashtag on social media to inspire acts of kindness, both big and small. It’s what the Care Bears would want!

If you liked this DIY, be sure to Pin it or send the link to a friend so you can have an crafternoon together. Thank you! 💛

    I want my M-Tee-V!

    Material Girl

Fashion & music have long been besties but I think the launch of MTV in 1981 really solidified their relationship. It suddenly brought the two elements into our living room and exposed us to a whole new side of entertainment.

That relationship of fashion & music is still relevant today but our source has shifted from television to social media, making our favorite artists just a click away. Keep reading to learn how they’ve inspired my outfit!

    Star Struck

I consider myself a pop culture connoisseur, not only of the ’80s but also of modern times. Celebs definitely influence my style!

10 years ago I saw Rihanna wearing a pair of gold bamboo earrings and I shortly lucked out finding some knock-offs from Walmart – the very ones in this outfit post! The style is so popular that they continue to be imitated year after year, like these ones from Forever 21.

You might also notice I’m wearing a tiny bat ring. It’s a humorous nod to the infamous Ozzy Osbourne incident where he allegedly bit the head off a bat. Though I bought it for more personal reasons, I thought it fit in perfect with this music-inspired look.

    Graphic Jam

The rest of my outfit pays tribute to merch acquired from concerts like my (tragically modern) MTV t-shirt.

There’s only so many times you can wear a band shirt with jeans before it gets old, right? So I chose to dress up my graphic t-shirt by wearing it over a matching leopard print maxi dress and tying a small knot at my natural waist for a little flair.

    Talk about versatili-tee! 😉

    I’m With The Band

Do you ever copy outfits from bands or artists? What was the most memorable look you recreated? I’d love to hear about it down in the comments!

  • How I Took Outfit Inspiration From An Unusual ’80s Movie

hannah rupp the outfit repeater cyndi lauper jeff goldblum vibes movie outfit inspired

I predict you’re going to love this outfit post.

    Good Vibes

Cyndi Lauper was my first (and forever) ’80s icon and her style is none more perfect than in the 1988 comedy Vibes. In it she plays a beautician with psychic abilities and gets dragged into a mysterious exploration in the mountains of Ecuador with Jeff Goldblum.

In honor of the movie turning 30 years old this month, I came up with a look to pay tribute to Cyndi’s character Sylvia and all the weird, wacky, and wonderful clothes she wears.

    Envisioning The Perfect Outfit

My vision for this outfit was something loosely inspired by the movie but with my own spin on it. Cyndi sports a lot of statement denim in the movie so wearing a jean jacket was a no-brainer. To dress things up, I went with a sequin slip dress that’s similar to one Cyndi wore at a fancy party.

Surprisingly, the only vintage I’m wearing is my newly thrifted white purse!

    Be Adventurous With Your Style

I may not have run off with Jeff Goldblum to solve a mystery in Ecuador, but I did try to be adventurous with my style choices. The juxtaposition of a dressy & casual piece is so unusual and I love it!

    Good Vibes

I can’t recommend Vibes enough if you’re looking for a cult classic comedy to chill with on a Saturday night. It’s the perfect amount of cheap laughs, 1980s fashion, and Jeff Goldblum’s face.

But don’t be like me and spend 4 years trying to thrift it on VHS. Just buy the DVD on Amazon and enjoy!

  • Red, White, and True Blue Personal Style

    Style Search

Not many people would find a vintage blue jumpsuit hanging in a thrift store basement very appealing, but I do. Why?

    True Blue

My earliest clothing influences were found in the pages of magazines. Models, celebrities, and real girls with street style in Seventeen and Teen Vogue greatly appealed to me. Their attitudes seemed cool and I figured it had to do with what they were wearing, which I would later find to be half true.

I had fun emulating their styles with clothes I found at the thrift stores (some things never change!) but still didn’t feel like I was dressing life myself.

Towards the end of my high school education in 2009, fashion blogs were popping up all over the place and I wanted to join in and share my thrifty outfits. It wasn’t until I took that conscious step to document and explore my clothing choices, that I started to discover my personal style.

    Out Of The Blue

My style has come together through lots of trial and error. I’ve learned along the way what I like and dislike to wear, fashion hacks for getting dressed faster, and savvy shopping strategies to get exactly what I want.

But haven’t I just become a product of my influences? Sort of. The way I see it, I’m still the one consciously choosing to wear these things in public so yes, style is still personal.

Clothes are a way to express yourself and speak before we even have a chance to say anything! Some people might not like what I have to “say” but TOUGH! If they don’t like it, they should be glad they’re not the ones wearing a vintage jumpsuit with bright red lipstick. 😉

    Jump To It

I’m not saying you have to start a blog to find your personal style but you do have to make an effort to find it. It’s not just going to surprise you one day while you’re shopping at a department store!

You can take action to find what inspires you by reading a magazine, catching up with friends, watching t.v., scrolling through Instagram, etc.

Then take note of those things and apply them to your closet. Strive to try something new everyday (speaking to your clothes here), take risks, and have fun. If it doesn’t work out, tomorrow is always a new day to try another new outfit!

    Roll Up Your Sleeves

This tip is much less a tip and more of a habit for me. I’m constantly rolling up my sleeves because I hate having my hands inhibited by fabric. (The only exception is when it’s cold.)

While the internet is aplenty with tutorials for rolling up your sleeve, the best idea I ever got was from a 1980s magazine. They suggested adding a rubberband around the cuff and then rolling up from there. It works especially well with bulky sweaters and cardigan materials!

    Wear Flair With Abandon

Another quick fix for any outfit is adding a pin, brooch, or any kind of fun flair. I’ve covered this topic on my blog lots of time in the past but here’s just a few more placement ideas.

You could wear it a little off-center on your purse or, my favorite, attach some pins on your shoelaces.

The friendly burger, animal skull, and broken heart enamel pins came from flair extraordinaire Melanie who designs flair for her Etsy shop called Pteroble. I assure you these pins are anything but terrible and are actually quite awesome!

Customize the Backing of Your Flair

If you’re anything like me then you’re also afraid of losing your pins when wearing them in the real world!

To combat this, I’ve taken to adding clear earring backs to all my pins whether they’re straight back or a bar. That little extra grippy security gives me peace of mind!

    The Cool Girl Tuck

Where would fashion be without the “casual” t-shirt tuck?

And by casual, I mean it takes about 5 minutes to perfect but the end result is totally worth it!

hannah rupp the outfit repeater simple clothing hacks vintage thrifted punk edgy flair enamel pins

    Distinguish Your Tights

Do you ever get a pair of tights that have no tag and there’s no way of telling the back from the front? This is especially frustrating if you wear your tights a time or two before washing. Enter: this trick.

I take an ordinary needle and colorful string and thread it through a back seam, cut it, and add a knot. Don’t be intimated by a needle. This literally requires no sewing skills at all!

Just a sidenote that all my We Love Color tights that I wear so much include a branded tag and I cannot thank them enough for that!!

    Clothing Curiosity

I’m often asked where I got my style or how I learned fashion things and it’s really just something I’ve picked up through the years. From magazines, the internet, friends, and blog posts like this one!

Always be curious, learn new things, and don’t be afraid to play in your closet. 🙂
