Making Cents of Online Shopping
If online shopping is supposed to make our life easier, then why do we spend more time browsing online than we do in stores? Something is not adding up.
Simplify your e-tailer experience by implementing some of the shopping secrets from my list below!
Speed Up Your Searching
I have a lot of beef with using Google to search for what I want to buy. Instead, I use specific search engines to find exactly what I’m looking for!
When I’m need of clothes, I use ShopStyle to narrow down my search. It has all my favorites stores in one place!
And when I’m looking for basically everything else (household, gifts, etc), I go to Pricegrabber and type in what I need. It doesn’t necessarily find the best price (more on that in a minute) but it gets me started on where I want to go.
Shopping of the Future
If you’re still trying to shop on your own, prepare to have your mind blown!
Never pay full price again with the incredible website/browser extension called Shoptagr. It allows you to save items you’re interested in to a special list and then they will alert you when that item is priced at an amount that you specified. This also works by alerting you when an item is back in stock. It’s a dream!
Money Back Guarantee
Now that you’re saving money, why not make some back and do some good with all your earnings?
Enter: Giving Assistant. This is an amazing browser extension that lets you shop on your favorite websites and earn cash back on purchases. You can potentially get back up to 10% every time you shop through them! But it gets better.. you can keep the money for yourself or choose to donate 1%-100% of it to your favorite charity.
Giving Assistant is available on over 3000 websites and it automatically searches and applies any discounts or coupon codes available on the website. If you sign up using my link, you and I will both receive $5 in cash. It’s a win-win situation for everyone!
If you’d like to continue the earning streak, consider using MyPoints where you earn points on your purchases that can later be redeemed for cash, gift cards, and other prizes. I’ve been a member since 2001 so I can attest that it’s a very real program with some great benefits!
Less Shipping, More Shopping
And last but not least are my favorite ways to get fast & free shipping when I shop online.
Try.com (Update: Try.com has gone out of business!) makes buying clothes a breeze! You can choose clothes (and accessories, jewelry, etc) from select retailers and have them shipped to you for free in a matter of days. You only pay for the item(s) that you love!
This is hugely important if you need to buy multiple sizes of an item and don’t want to waste the money paying for each item. When it’s free, you feel more open to exploring new styles and trying new things. A minor downside to watch out for is that Try does take a small (or large, depending on your order) temporary fee out of your bank account before shipping the items but then puts the money right back. Other than that, I’d highly recommend this service as it’s helped me a lot!
But when you’re more certain of a purchase and need it fast, use Shoprunner. Sign-up for an account, shop on over 100 websites, choose free 2-day shipping at the checkout, and you can even ship it back for free if it doesn’t work out. Most stores require a $25 minimum but that’s not very hard to to online. 😉
Shoprunner has a free 30-day trial membership but it’s definitely worth it in the long run to sign up for the paid membership which is $79 a year!

Those are just a handful of tips that I use when I shop online! I still prefer brick and mortar stores but having these tips in my pocket makes shopping online less of a headache.
