What I Wore in the 2000s
Time flies when you’re having fun with fashion!
I was a kid when Y2k fashion was all the rage but I remember it fondly and, thankfully, have a lot of photos to prove I was there.
While I never participated in some of the “trendy” trends of the early aughts due to my youth and disinterest in trying to look like everyone else, I still made some bold style choices at the same.
Some things change but some things stay the same—like my love for thrifting.
Most of my clothes growing up were from thrift stores, just as they still are today.
I thought I’d look back at some pieces that stand out to me and update the outfits with pieces in my closet. If you’re also a millennial, then you’ll love these outfits!
Let’s hop into the throwback machine and get some Y2k style inspo!
Y2k Style: Flower Girl
Colors and patterns have always been my jam so it should come as no surprise that an obnoxious floral windbreaker had me in a chokehold as a kid.
I owned other windbreaker items but this one was in heavy rotation.
To update it for my grown-up style, I wore a more tasteful floral shirt, some signature palazzo pants, and lots of pink accessories.
Y2k Style: Collegiate Wannabe
Does it get much more Y2k than a bucket hat, platform sneakers, and a Barbie film camera?!
I remember thrifting this Badgers sweatshirt but have no idea why other than the fact that I’m from Wisconsin. But I guess my Harvard sweatshirt isn’t much better since I never attended college?! lol
I gave the outfit a modern update with a smart-looking plaid blazer, wide-leg jeans, and classic Converse-style sneakers. I would have LOVED to have a pair of “Chucks” as a kid. They were quite a status symbol in my group.
Y2k Style: Mellow Yellow
For my final Y2k outfit, I dug into my modeling archive. Did you know I used to walk in runway shows at my local Walmart? Even then I knew I loved fashion and showing off my outfit to the masses.
It’s hard to top the rainbow striped yellow tee and matching black maxi skirt (that I remember having a MELTDOWN over because I wanted my mom to buy it for me—she eventually gave in and I got the look) but I gave it a try with a yellow moto jacket, rainbow crop top, and black palazzo pants.
I definitely feel like the cool grown-up I always wanted to be!
Fashion Flashback
This was fun to look back at some of the questionable fashion choices I made as a kid and give them a modern update!

I love this post idea! I did Fashion Bug modeling as a kid and I’d love to re-do some of my outfits! My favorite outfit is the floral top and palazzo pants. Perfect color palette, IMO.
